I'm looking into getting a PS3, but the only thing I fear is that the Sony's next gen console isn't too far off.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: Alrighty, so I'm set on getting one, now I just need to figure out what games to start with.

I'm thinking of a Uncharted 2, some sort of JRPG, and a shooter (maybe Boarderlands?)

Any and all feedback is appreciated thanks guys!

2014 i guess... I don't know, depends if you need to get a new console on launch or if you can stick to your old one for a while.

The development of the new console may be delayed due to the... yeah you know, security problems lately.

I doubt that you'll even hear of a new PlayStation or even a new Xbox for three or four years. Nintendo however....

You can probably get one of the old piano black PS3s for 150 bucks or so and only spend 15-30 bucks on all the games you've missed. That's exactly what I did.

I actually need to go buy a PS2 and play through the games I missed there...

I should have enough of an income to get a next gen console in a few years, I just want this one last for 2 years or so.

We've gotten THIS far into this topic and no mention of LittleBig Planet? That needs to be fixed.

Also, if you've never played a Katamari game, you should really pick up Katamari Forever. I can't really explain it if you've never played it, just watch this:

*shrug*

If you own a ps3, you should have to play:
1. Lair (last game Factor 5 ever made - maker of obscure and unsuccessful games such as Rebel Assault). But play the game unpatched - the patch just picks out half of the neat sixaxis controls. Has immense foley artist jobs, etc. Not exactly hailed for fantastic writing. But you get to fry small soldiers with your very own dragon. Hahahahahah! I mean, what else could you possibly ask for (unless you're Sony, and want Buzz on the internet more than a quality game, obviously).
2. WipeoutHD (last game Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool ever made, because Sony is awesome. Also, be aware that Sony introduced dynamic advertisement into version 2.0. So if the game suddenly starts blurting out extremely loud commercials during the loading screens again, you know what happened, and who to thank for that. Still - Psygnosis' last deed is a very good game, and has interesting multiplayer that many of us still play once in a while. So if you want to race the 2000 best Wipeout players in the world - the game costs almost nothing).
3. flOw (fantastic same-screen multiplayer)
4. Pixeljunk shooter 1&2 (very good physics based cave-puzzle-shooter).
5. Valkyria Chronicles (a beautiful adventure.. seriously, though - a very good strategy rpg game that doesn't look like anything else, even if it has the same impression during a game as xcom/jagged alliance).
6. inFamous - Sucker Punch knows what they're doing, and .. apart from small details having to do with Cole's hair in I2.. also are really good at carving out their own niche in visual story-telling.
7. Uncharted 2. Hollywood popcorn movie. But kind of fun. Too bad that we're not getting an update on client filtering, because the game plays really beautifully in a well-matched game.
8. MAG. 256 players online, etc. It's also plagued with lag, for the same reason as mentioned above. But /compared to other console-titles/ it's still much better than anything out there. Which is sad, in a way.. It also costs almost nothing right now, because Sony are idiots.
9. Heavy Rain - nothing that really looks or plays like it. If you liked Mass Effect, in the sense that you liked running around finding out what people thought, what they reacted to, and so on - then you'll also like Heavy Rain. It doesn't have more than one level with guns, though. So if you can't play games without a reticle on the screen, stay clear...
10. Sony can shut the fuck up 2.0 - the game. A magnificent epic like no other, where small robots run around all day, tweeting your ears full of advertisement blurbs and bullshit in return for your loyal support. The more games you purchase, the more you attract the tweeting bull. Really fucking funny game. Make sure you pick the "please send me spam about buying a second ps3 to my registered mail-address where I have filled in my registered ps3 details", etc, and follow the press-statements for the full fucking experience.

Also look out for The Last Guardian - if it's ever released, presumably with move, 3d and graphical glitches, along with a contract where you promise the Sony Playstation family your undying support.

Gran Turismo 5 also.. finally came out, after all - this is a very, very good car-simulator. All the way up there above the best PC sims. Sometimes above them. One of the few ps3 titles with 1080p support. Can be played well on the pad as well as a wheel. And comes with 3d support and head-tracking.. that actually is part of the gameplay, rather than just a gimmick. I.e., the 3d is using the information stored in the scene already to give you depth-effects that are "real", rather than just the overlay "effect" that follows the object you have in most other titles. This is.. probably something you won't see again on new games before the "next gen" comes out. Polyphony Digital should have impressed the socks off anyone - but the console-press is made up of people who hate things based on how many copies a game is RUMOURED to sell on the internet. And review-sites will happily avoid discussing any of this, technical or otherwise, to not piss off PC and xbox exclusive gamers, apparently..

Uncharted 3 is also looking ok. Very neat customisation, and dynamic levels, etc. The question is the lag. If Sony will stick with their incessant "everyone should be able to play" scheme, that refuses to deny people from the opposite world playing in a game with warping lag, etc.

Infamous 2 should be fantastic. They've added a slew of things to the engine.. lots of effects and physics that was missing in the first game - but which you thought was dropped because "no one does that in a game anyway", etc... is put in there. Will be interesting to see how they deal with cartoon/game-crossover as well..

Journey - could be ok. But apparently underwent some changes halfway, since Sony wanted an offline game instead of a new type of online game. That might very well have been unique.

Other games that are definitively worth it on the ps3: Shatter, Fancy Pants Adventures, Flower, Tumble.

Absolutely get Tumble if you get a move. Also: The Fight. Hilarious game.

Games you should just ignore:
1. Killzone 2&3. Killzone 2 is a very interesting game. It has sound-production (with surround) that rivals that of a good movie. Except.. it's all dynamic. It has AI that tricks you. It has visual story-telling and screenplay that works really well. The architecture in the game.. you can call it architecture rather than level-design. It's... extremely well done. Unfortunately the game was patched apart very soon after release, because of misers on the internet (I kid you not - GG has a crush on NeoGaf, and take design-advice from "most people" there. Hence, the game is now crap. Online is bullshit now). KZ3 became a more expensive production compared to KZ2 - but lost all the unique things KZ2 had. They focused on graphics and effects instead for some reason.. They kept the "insane lag in all online modes" feature, though, to please the COD crowd. Along with the "SUPER HAPPY KILL MAJOR OVERLOAD" overlay popups every time you shoot someone.
2. Resistance 2. Hopeless game.
3. Warhawk. Has great animation on the Warhawk. Tries to be something in between Battlefield 2142, Halo in 3rd person, and Giants: Citizen Kabuto. The gameplay is terrible unless you like jumping up and down a lot.
4. Socom 4. Ok offline modes, or online with friends. Online not good, mainly for the same reason as mentioned elsewhere - the "everyone should be able to connect no matter if their connection is broken" policy Sony has. Is more interesting to play with Move-support. Game makes a lot of sense with the bulb-controller..
5. Motorstorm. What's so impressive about this game? It's that it's about fifty-nine times better than any other similar arcade-racer on consoles. Each new game has something interesting in it, that they then fail to build on. I.e., mud-stripes and dug out tracks in one game. Dynamic level-paths in another. It also tends to still sell massively less copies than other arcade shooters. Other than that, not very remarkable series, even if it's an ok game.
6. Little Big Planet. Media Molecule is now "married" to Sony, to borrow a phrase from MM themselves. That means their first game is now patched apart when it comes to the online. And that the second title is going to have the same. It also lost the unique "risky but cute" humour that made LBP so fantastic to play for children in all ages. Avoid the game, and save yourself a headache.
7. Yakuza 4. Better fighting mechanics than in Y3, but not really very funny otherwise. Not as good writing, not as good boss-fights. Yakuza 3 still good, though.

Also: the entire "let's play dice with your credit card information" game. Sucks ass. No real chance Sony is ever going to patch that one, though..

I wouldn't touch the PS3 with a ten-foot pole. Five will get you ten there will be some other outrageous PS3-related scandal before the next console generation rolls around.

Be smart and invest in a better PC instead.

I'd get uncharted one as well. You can pick it up pretty cheap in most games stores.

Also: I'm typing this on my PS3 right now. my laptop broke so i'm using my ps3 for internet! :D

EDIT: you should definetly get resistance 1 and 2. and 3 when it comes out. not fantastic games, but they are above average.
