I wouldn't touch the PS3 with a ten-foot pole. Five will get you ten there will be some other outrageous PS3-related scandal before the next console generation rolls around.

Be smart and invest in a better PC instead.
Good point. But truth is that.. you're going to miss a few unique titles if you don't get a ps3 now. Also - like said^.. Psygnosis' last deed. The last Wipeout game ever made. The Last Guardian. Gran Turismo 5. Flower. Lair (last "Rebel Assault" type game to be made - but in high definition). Heavy Rain. Animation in Uncharted and inFamous. There's nothing like it on any platform. Either from a design-standpoint, or when it comes to technical details.

It's a nasty thing, since Sony sucks so bad, but there are a few games on the platform and hardware that are unique. Beyond just being small add-ons or technical curiosities..

I'd suggest not getting one nowww.....:/ Maybe try a month. But games you should get? I would suggest not any of the Modern Warfares or Black ops because the PS3 wasn't souly made for multiplayer. So I'd suggest InFAMOUS and InFAMOUS 2 when that cames, Final Fantasy XIII, Uncharted 1, 2 and 3 when that comes, Mass Effect 2, Killzone 2 and 3, Portal 2, Castlevania, and a bunch of PS1 titles you can buy from the marketplace.

If you buy a PS3, you HAVE to play inFamous. Best game I've played all year!

Whatever you do, skip inFamous. There are too many competent and awesome third person shooters out there to waste time and money on a terrible one. Of course, if you want to see Sucker Punch fail at every aspect of game development, go for it. They can't tell a decent story. They can't manage proper choices that change the story. They can't make characters that you give a damn about, which ties back into not being able to tell a decent story because the story requires you to give a shit about Cole's girlfriend, but you won't. They can't make an open world that has things to do after you beat all the missions. They can't even make a damned statistics page. The game completely fails on every level, and if I could go back in time and stop myself from playing it, I would. It's that awful.

I definitely recommend the system. As for first party, uncharted, god of war and infamous are all great.

what you start with should be soley your decision but I can recommend some games

Metal Gear Solid 4 : Guns of the Patriots
Enslaved : Oddysee to the West
Uncharted 1 & 2 (2 is way better)
Demon's Souls (Hard but rewarding)
Dynasty Warriors 7 (if you like hack n slash type games with a good story^^)
Tekken 6
Final Fantasy XIII (the first 3 hours are boring gameplay wise, but the game is very good IMHO)
Heavy Rain (AWESOME!!!)
Marvel Vs Capcom 3
Eternal Sonata (is a good JRPG)
Valkyre Chronicles (is a good JRPG too, but different)
God of War (1&2 as a collection and 3 as a single game all are good)

Demon's Soul. Get it. Now. Do it. AND DIE MULTIPLE TIMES!
This this this this this.
Cannot recommend this game enough. I've put atleast 500+ hours into it and still start it up from time to time just to play around. Great game.

Also, if you don't have it, Vanquish is a greatgame though not exclusive that everyone should try out. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is also fun, though most prefer the xbox version.

Uncharted 2 and inFamous are my recommendations. Then LA Noire when it comes out (they've been demoing everything on the PS3 so far, and it was originally a PS3 exclusive, so it looks to be the best version).

JRPG: A dying breed on the current gen. Here are your options:

Eternal Sonata (enjoyable little JRPG in the tradition of a Tri-Ace game),
Valkyria Chronicles (very nice, on almost every level),
White Knight Chronicles I or II (haven't played it myself),
Final Fantasy XIII (though I DO NOT recommend it!),
Resonance of Fate (not the easiest of JRPGs, also, it plays like a typical Tri-Ace game),
Star Ocean: The Last Hope (haven't played it myself),
Enchanted Arms (meh...),
Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll (haven't played it myself),

And that's pretty much it, and none of these plays like a 'classic' JRPG à la Dragon Quest, pre-FF XI Final Fantasies or Shin Megami Tensei titles (well, except for Enchanted Arms, but, again: meh...)

So really, you're better of with a PS2 and/or a handheld if your looking for some really good JRPGs (that don't betray their roots). Unless, of course, you include the PSN, which has titles like Final Fantasy, Grandia, Vagrant Story, Front Mission 3 and other PSOne classics for a pretty low price. (taking in account, of course, that right now, PSN is in a serious fritz)

Shooter: Quite the inverse of JRPG's, you've got so much damn choice it's sickening. From Bioshock to Half-Life, from Bulletstorm to Killzone, from Battlefield to Medal of Honor and from COD to SOCOM. But yeah, thinking about picking up Borderlands? Go for it, awesome game, especially if you've got friends to play it with. And if I'm not mistaking, you can now get an edition that has all the expansions figured into it and costs less than the original did at its release.

At some point put your damn foot down. There are hundreds of games worth his money in the world, and a lot of them aren't chained down with shitty Sony problems. I want to play Cave's iPhone games so bad that I would probably slit somebody's throat if it would get them ported to a different platform, but I'm not getting an iDevice because Apple shouldn't get my money.

This thread isn't the place for me to beat you to death with my opinions, so I'll just leave it at that.

On topic: Flow is pretty awesome. You should get that.

Yes

some sort of JRPG,
I would recommend Valkyria Chronicles. More of a turn-based strategy game than a pure RPG, but it's a fantastic game. You could also play Resonance of Fate [small](impenetrably convoluted story, great characters, fun gameplay)[/small], Folklore [small](not quite an RPG either, still a great game, seriously underrated)[/small], Nier [small](good game, adequate gameplay)[/small], Demon's Souls [small](it's a JRPG, also balls hard)[/small], Eternal Sonata [small](sounds good, haven't played, tri-Crescendo has talented people from what I've heard)[/small] and Disgaea 3 (if you've ever played Disgaea you know what you're in for).

Disgaea 4 is coming sometime soon and so is Tales of Graces F, two games that should be worth it. If Tales of Xillia gets a localization, it will be the best thing ever made.

and a shooter (maybe Boarderlands?)
Sure, Borderlands is good.

I'm not sure if the offer is still up, but you could also get a cheap bundle of Vanquish and Bayonetta. The latter isn't a shooter, just an awesome game (make sure you install it to the HDD and patch it up, though, otherwise you'll get insane loading times).

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but Wipeout HD is great too.

He asked for a JRPG. Go ahead, recommend a PC JRPG that isn't a doujin game, five hundred years old or terrible.

For starters, wait until PSN is up. It should be this week but you never know.

And I would get Uncharted 2, Gran Turismo 5, InFamous, Ratchet and Clank games for the system and MGS4. Though MGS4's online gameplay is horrible.

:D hear, hear.

Still.. it's a bit like.. not getting one of the first 3d cards when those came out. Imo, some of the titles on the ps3 are that unique. Animation splines in Uncharted, for example. Random animation cycles, different animation states depending on momentum and speed.. Animation and run-states, tracking, node-generation on inFamous.. this is not trivial extras, but a bit of a leap. A long leap from the usual state-based animation. Same with physics simulation in GT5. Or dynamically playing animation splines the player controls in Heavy Rain. Each of these titles have one of these impossible tech-things.

You have a point, though. And I would agree completely if it wasn't for the fact that we're not going to get a PC any time soon with an integrated bus and multiple programmable processor elements. The closest we're probably going to get in the near future... ten years or so.. is on-chip solutions. So... it may well be that we're not going to see anything near what we have in Uncharted, WipeoutHD, Killzone 2, etc. until at least another "generation cycle". Because.. games aren't made that way. The entire idea with creating huge contexts, and then reducing/collapsing the view-port afterwards is.. it requires that type of hardware and processing power. And we're simply not going to see it on a modular system any time soon. ...I really wish we did, because this is fantastic stuff that shouldn't be bogged down in Sony shit. But there you go..

Any and all feedback is appreciated thanks guys!
Borderlands (goty) is definitely a good choice, especially if you have people who want to play it with you. That game has probably got more play on my ps3 than anything else aside from maybe Fallout 3 and Warhawk.
If you dig strategy, you should also check out Valkyria Chronicles.
