Would an MMO work on a console?

You could/can do whatever they hell you want and have it work if you do it right. Just because you can't put World of Warcraft on a console doesn't mean you couldn't put a MMOG on a console. If every designer that set out to make a MMOG would get their head out of World of Warcraft's ass and actually put some thought into the basis and execution of their game, we might eventually see this.

As it stands, the MMOG has become the new FPS: one metric fuckton of derivative crap for every ounce of creative innovation. For as many of them as there are out there they are all so similar its freakin' sick; they might as well be nothing but reskins of the same damn game.

A console would be perfectly suited to some kind of shooter or action RPG styled MMOG.

Why are people talking about hardware requirements? I think if consoles can handle gears of war and mgs4 they can handle world of warcraft and guild wars for christ's sake.

Also, if console developers simply added keyboard and mouse support the control scheme problem would be bypassed - I mean hell, there's USB ports all over consoles these days, why not put them to use?

No, that's just it. You don't need that. Use what you have available. Part of the reason I hate MMORPGS is that the extent of your involvement in the game is clicking on an enemy and mashing the 1-0 keys -- this is boring as hell! Make some games you actually have to play.

i think they have just been waiting for installed base on 360 or ps3 think of the money needed to sustain them and ps3 and 360 are new in cycle, i prefer the ease of getting online with my 360 if it wasnt for that i would only play on my pc, if a mmo comes out on ps3 first im buying it, i think a mmo might be in works now and 32 is enough , i cant get along with more than a couple at a time.

But it is unfortunately only one game amongst many. I would like to see more things done with the idea of MMOGs than endless parades of WoW clones.

I'm still not getting how console hardware "isn't powerful enough". If an off-the shelf, basic PC can run Guild Wars, why couldn't a console? What exactly isn't it powerful enough for, anyhow?

Well isn't Huxley coming out for the 360? Last time I checked, it was. If not, then correct me.

i think it might work with loading screens between sections. say the analog sticks are for looking around and motion (as they should be) and all 4 letter buttons and 4 directions with the control stick plus the bumbers and triggers that leaves u 10 hotkeys in simple or u could use the castle crashers system of holding down a button in combo with pressing down another ie hold right trigger press x then it could work but the most mmo oriented gamers are pc gamers and the fan base for the three consoles doesnt fit {wii ie 5 year olds and casual gamers, x-box action gamers pro gamers and single players western rpg players ( who might be receptive)and ps3 gamers are more jrpg gamers ie final fantasy ( so if its a mmo thts like a jrpg it might work) and whatever you would call the people who play mgs + assasins cread i guess stalth gamers but i dont really know, also action gamers who like racers + shooters}

mmos on a console would be fine, they'd just need to drop the fee, but since that probably wouldn't happen...

Considering the crushing majority, not to say the entirety there of, MMOs come down to one click combat, grindsandwhichs and spam... I don't see why not... You really only need a D-pad/analog stick and a couple keys:

- D-pad/analog to move around
- Standard Attack button
- Run away button
- Pause/menu button with the huge amalgamation of needless menus, options and features you'll most likely never use past the first 10 minutes.
- 2 different "spell/skill" keys, since in all honesty it always comes down to spamming your best move and MAYBE 1 alternative move that heals/does status changes.

Now, if you wanna make the first DECENT MMO, with GOOD combat and no grind... That might be more complicated, but it should still be possible...

MMOs need dedicated servers and regular updates which cost alot of money.
doesn't xbox live have servers?

Try Guild Wars - you don't even have to bother grinding, you have the option to start with maximum power, the best gear, and all skills so the PvP is 100% based on strategy rather than time invested.

(On the downside you do have to buy the expansions to get the new skills that your opponents will be using, but it's possible to make do with what you've got)

No, Xbox live generally randomly picks a user to host the game. The only thing they really host are the actual lobbies. You won't find dedicated servers in many, if any, xbl games.

Isn't guild wars turn based combat? It looks awfully like it from the youtube videos...

Honorable mention for removing the grind either ways... But turn based combat is still epic failure.
