Would naming my kid "Vault" be a detriment to him in life? Or a bonus giving him instant geek-cred?

Pretty much right up there.^

Yeah, I'd like to name my kid (if it's a boy) Vault. Don't ask me why gender matters, but Vault doesn't seem like a girly name to me. It represents hidden treasures and the ability to literally leap any obstacle. Plus, it's kind of avant-garde.

Also, for a while, on my game-broadcasting channel on another site, Vault is part of my screen name, and that was my default nickname given by my fans, so it'd kind of add that sense of Jr. to his name without actually adding Jr. (I'm a lot like Indiana Jones in my opinions on the Junior moniker.)

Anyways, am I setting him up for a lifetime of torment, or am I giving an awesome, life-long gift? What do you think, Escapists?

(Note: I don't really consider this politics, but if any mods believe that it is, please, feel free to move it to that forum. ^_^)

EDIT: I mean as a middle name, not a single name like Madonna or Jesus. So, he can pick which he goes by, Vault, or whatever first name I give him.

EDIT 2: Oh well, I've learned what I wanted to... he'll have to put up with ignorance... big shocker. That'll happen regardless, as the world seems split about even with heartless d-bags and people that realize 'A rose by any other name" etc.

I've decided I'm going for it.

His name will be (firstname) Vault (lastname).

Thanks to all those that were constructive with their criticism without resorting to name calling or blind hatred, and those who supported this unique name.

EDIT 3 (REALLY?): My wife is cool with it.

EDIT 4 (REALLY??!??!): Children... ALL children, will be made fun of. ALL OF THEM.

Their names being 'normal' is not a guarantee against bullying. As far as targeting him a bit easier, good. Get tough skin. Learn to be witty in your defense. Soon, it will turn from detriment to bonus, as a conversation starter, or an aid for witty repartee.

Thus, I do not find the 'advice' that 'they'll be made fun of' a valid argument against it.

I would say more harm than good, perhaps it would make a better middle name. If he likes it he can use it as a nickname.

It's a toss-up. Would you like having a name like vault? Think about it honestly. If you can say truthfully to yourself in a dark room with no one around that you would, fine name him that. But if you have any doubts, then think about it. The kid gets to have the life for life unless he name changes.

Or play it safe. Name him Vault **Actual name** Mclastname. That way if he truly hates Vault with a passion he can use the middle one.

Only if you don't want your child to hate you and everything that you stand for, for saddling him with the name that will make him the laughing stock of his entire school.

I thought it was stupid at first, but after considering it for a couple of seconds, I find that I rather like it. His peers might not feel the same way, though. If you really want to name him that, but you're still worried about it, you could try a name that could be shortened to Vault. I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's at least one out there.

Also, I think it would work just as well for a girl, but that's just me.

I'd make it a middle name, that way he can just not let anyone know about it and avoid the embarrassment of being named Vault.

Oh, that's a given. He's getting it on his 18th birthday instead of a car.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I use my middle name because I don't like my first.

Actually, yeah. It's why I wanna name him that, so I can have it vicariously as my own name. Like I said, people on my casting channel all call me that, and I dig it.

If he goes to an entire school that gets the reference and thinks it's nerdy... I'd be very confused. How can you know about Fallout and not think that it's a totally k-rad name?

And if it's a girl, how about Drawer?

What about Couch? Did you consider that one?
I can think of heaps that you might not have thought of...

Briefcase?
Mattress?
Table? Good sturdy name that one...
Hahaha! XD

You have a thing for furniture, don't you?

Sure, if he you want the crap beaten out of him, go nuts.

Why not "safe" or "strongbox" or "holdfast" whilst you're at it?

OK, sound words of advice from someone whose mother used to work in payroll, and as such saw a lot of names.
DO NOT. Have fun with your child's name. Name them something slightly unusual, but never name them something that sounds silly, can be shortened to something silly, or could possibly bounce back.
Check initials, check accents, check misspellings. Do not let your child suffer the same as Ronald McDonald, Robert, Rachel, and Richard Sole, Nelly Smelly, William Shakespeare, and Ellie Fahnt

*Spittake* 18!? My boy, if your son doesn't have a car by 18, he will have more to worry about then his name.
I'm halfway past my 18th birthday and I don't have a car... Or a license, for that matter.

OT: I'd go with what the others are saying, if you really like the name then make it his middle name or something. Out of curiosity, how does his future mother feel about this?

Bah, I didn't get my first car til I was 20, so he better count himself lucky. :p

Well, his last name won't be Dweller, so we should be ok on that front. ;)

Dammit, I knew there was something I was forgetting. I'll let you know when she wakes up in the morning.

/shrug Honestly with the recent advents of naming conventions over the last 20 years, really it doesnt seem that out of place, and really its kind of hard for one kid to make fun of one named vault when he goes to class with a Branch, Day, Moss, Pike, Ranger, and a Zebulon. (all Boys names I have encountered over the last 5 years alone.

So really wouldnt worry about it.

Hell, Im sort of guilty of the same desire as I would want to name my first Daughter Valkyrie.

If you deck him out with a MIRV and five million guns, he can be called Wimpy McBullyme for all it matters.
