Would we all be better people without gaming?

Every now and again I start entertaining these thoughts. And then go back to gaming as per usual.

Seriously though, what would we all be doing without video games? If you think about the collective participation hours spent on them we (collectively) probably would have found a cure for cancer or be all a virtuoso at some instrument.

EDIT: Admittedly cancer is a bit of an exaggeration.lol But you just never know. Video games are just a channel for productivity. Some gamers can be brilliant people but the areas of interest just doesn't have a streamlined user interface games have.

And if all the musicians stopped playing music they'd have more time for games.

Ok, yeah, cancer, got me there.

Nope, we'd have watched a lot more television, a hell of a lot more movies or listened to more music.

Take away one form of entertainment and people will go on to others. Removing gaming will not bring about the cure for cancer any faster.

Well... I can certainly say we probably wouldn't be worse people (as a whole anyway).

I know that I'd probably have less friends, or, at the very least, be traveling in a different circle of friends as most of us in the core group are gamers and have that in common. Without that, well, we really don't have much else in common or anything. :(

Not entirely serious, maybe.

If I had no videogames. I would actually have time to be playing the Warhammer 40k tabletop, and probably reading more books as well as watching more movies.

Pretty much because of this.

I personally think I would get into more sports. Or maybe start getting serious about rock climbing or snowboarding (as opposed to being just tourists for the thing).

You would be right if you assume that we would work instead of playing games. I personally only play games when i dont have work to be doing. If i worked any harder i think id go insane. So personally when i play games its in my free time when im not going to b doing anything else anyway

I love Jane. She is exactly what prompted this forum. In a less serious tone of course.lol

I'm almost done with her book in fact -- Reality is Broken, and it is a pretty good read. I'd recommend it to any gamer.

Nope.

But we would be better people without commenting on internet boards of all kinds *about* games and blowing things out of proportions regularly to suit our prejudices of them, both positive or negative ones to be fair. Of that I am dead certain.

You never know. Probably not cancer, but with 210 million collective participation hours spent weekly on World of Warcraft alone, you just never know what we could be doing. That's an incredible amount of collective engagement on just a single world.

we'd be better if we didnt have war, poverty, governmental differences, and socio-economical classes.

But just going by the OP's logic if we didnt have musicians (along with games) wed have even MORE time to cure cancer. and if we didnt have Tv or media even MORE! in fact, if we were all just chained to a lab table and said you're not allowed to go free until every disease/bodily problem is fixed and not allowed to do anything else, we'd find them much faster then we do today.

I would have a lot worse to manage for my anger management issues since video games help manage my issues. Or I might be in jail for going off on someone because I haven't found a socially acceptable way of dealing with my anger and rage.

Nah.

It's a nice thought, but you know in you're heart of hearts that you'd just be burning time some other way, as would I.
