No. $560 for one game is just way to much. I can buy an expensive PC part for that. Actually I could buy a crappy car for that. As a general rule I dont consider the purchase of a console unless theres at least 10 games I want to play on it and have some good replayability. If it was around $100 yeah I could get behind that for a really good game but I dont think last generation consoles have fallen that far.

The NES, SNES, Playstation, playstation 2, PS Vita, and PC have enough games to justify the cost to me. The Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and Xbox one do not yet have enough exclusives to justify the cost to me. Buyers remorse of the 360 and PS3 have left me even more careful about buying the new consoles. At this point I dont think Ill ever buy them, espeically with PC gaming on the rise again.

is easily the best looking game in the industry.

PC gaming 'on the rise' is all pretty relative depending on the genre you choose; but remember, console gaming is on the rise, too -- even the Xbox One is breaking sales records. So I don't know what's to stop you from buying one next year.

Shadowfall, Second Son, Order, Uncharted 4, Drive Club, Bloodbourne will all be available; not to mention their freaking Game of Year quality indies. (And you that SONY's exclusives have won 3 of the last 4 GOTY awards; they're doing something exceptional over there. The only game I see that matches them is Fallout 3:GOTY.

The PlayStation 3 has over 100 exclusive titles, and it opens you up to the Japanese genre experience. But I do feel for you; because if you had played Uncharted 2 or Infamous 2 or Last of Us, then you would know that the PC (and third party developers) can't deliver SONY's high production experience.

It's just different.

I may be in the minority here, but usually when I do make the decision to buy a console, it is exactly for one game.

At any point that I'm in the market for a new console, I'll already have a couple, as well as a PC for gaming on. At no point am I at a loss for options to amuse myself. If there's a game that looks interesting but I can't play on any of my current hardware, I'll usually just play something else. Like I think most of us, it's difficult to justify dropping hundreds of dollars on just one game you can't be sure you'll like, and are going to feel really stupid about if you don't and now you're out $500.

However, there tends to come along a game for a new console that, for whatever reason, I absolutely have to play, in this sort of "Oh, dammit I really need to see what that's about" and will get the new console to play it. I'll end up playing more on that system, of course, and will find other games I love even more, many of them having interested me before I got the system, but that impetus has always been just one game to push me over the edge. For Gamecube it was Wind Waker, DS it was Phoenix Wright, PS3 it was Metal Gear Solid 4, PS2 was... I think it might actually have been the DVD player come to think of it, and with the PS4 it looks to be Silent Hills (P.T.).

So, yeah. If you look at whatever game and can't avoid saying to yourself "Dammit, that looks amazing, right in my wheelhouse, and I really, REALLY need to play this," and can afford the console, don't beat yourself up over it, and know that in the future you'll find other games for it as well.

I'm going to guess OP means Destiny.

It sounds like a good game to me, and it's actually one i've been wanting, a Borderlands-like MMO without unwieldy garbage.

I'm definitely not going to buy the console for it though. PC all the way. If it really hits big and people do nothing but play this game as the GDP drops because of it, it'll get a port to PC or multiple quality copycats anyway.

Shooters with console controllers... please
Nope :). It's a slightly older game on Ps3.

I bought PS Vita for Persona 4 Golden.

Thankfully it turned out to be more than "that thing I played Persona 4 Golden on".

Would I?

I already have. Bought a Wii U for a few games, but primarily for one game in particular.

You could look for them at garage sales. I got a PS3 with a bunch of games and accessories at a garage sale for $100, and then sold all the games and accessories I didn't want for about $85.

Well......... I did get a PS3 just for MGS4.............. b-but I was aware of Uncharted 2 prior! And I am planning to get a PS4 for Bloodborne....... but MGSV and Persona 5 are on the horizon i'll have you know! And don't even get me started on why I got the WiiU...

There does comes a point where most people do. But I have yet to meet someone who, besides their game of main interest, hasn't mentioned how a console's general library is just as interesting.

It's just different.
The issue is most of those exclusives I have so little info about them I cant possibly look forward to unproven, untested, unreviewed products that are months away and going to be buried under mountains of hype. Im just not a guy that buys into the hype. The other issue, specifically with Uncharted, infamous, and last of us, is I could care less about them. Just because a system has exclusives doesnt mean I want to buy them. Its a subtle but important difference

Funny that you should mention the "japanese experience" because a large number of japanese indie developers are focusing on developing for the PC. Not only that but many developers like Square and Fromsoft are seeing that theres money to be made on the PC as well. Theyre releasing games for us and hopefully other developers will follow their example. I know theres already people asking for Persona 5 to be ported to PC

Edit: One other point that came to me was your idea of the quality of games from 3rd party developers vs those that appear on consoles. Ill take the last of us as an example because its a game I played to completion twice. The first time I was wowed by the setting but on my second playthrough I began seeing the poor gameplay behind the really good story (I actually made a thread about that a long time ago). Having played the last of us and many 3rd party developed games for PC I can safely say yes many 3rd party developers can make better games then the last of us though in different ways. You might ask, what games? I can think of plenty off the top of my head. Im a big RPG fan so how about Shadowrun returns, Divinity: Original sin, Blackguards, or the Banner Saga. Each one has its own excellent visual and thematic aesthetics that reinforce the gameplay and the world. You simply cant make the case that the last of us' clunky controls aids the aesthetic. Ive seen people claim that they made gunplay clunky because real gunplay is clunky but I suspect those people are in a privileged position of never having been in an actual firefight against other human beings. I have been in that position during my tours in Iraq. It could be argued that training and experience could play a part in the discussion but in the context of the last of us Joel never seemed like someone who wasnt experienced in real combat by that point in his life. I still hold to the opinion that the last of us had at best mediocre gameplay with an excellent story but when I hold it up to any of the games I mentioned, not to mention PC classics, it doesnt hold a candle to them. Your mileage may vary of course

Despite what many people think. As a PC gamer I am not, nor will I ever be, a graphics whore. Gameplay and story often trump any graphical superiority. Dont get me wrong, I like games to look good with well directed artistry backed up by detailed graphical fidelity but this is not a necessity to me. My favorite game of all time, a game I play several times a week, is in fact X-com: Enemy unknown (1993) and no one can say that game looks good

It was well worth it, as upon buying it I found there are a lot of games for the Vita that are really solid.
I did the same thing and am pretty much going to be buying a PS4 for Persona 5 and possibly Bloodborne
I did the same thing, Persona 4 golden + PlayStation plus games.
Well worth it, currently playing Danganronpa 2 and Loving every second of it.

It's a particular game that always makes me buy a console... but then I will gain a collection for it.

If I had the money I would have all the consoles... but this is impractical, so will get them when they have that game I really want!

I also like to catch up on games I missed that I wanted to play, but didn't for what ever reason. I recently updated my PS1 and 2 library with a lot of games I wish I had played when they were out. This included things like A Dogs Life, Unholy War and Dirge of Cerebrus.

I imagine at some point I will get a PS3 and play all the exclusives I missed. I really want to play God of War 3, Little Big Planet and Uncharted. And I have never played Killzone either!

I did that a few times. I bought a Dreamcast way back b/c of Resident Evil Code Veronica, a Gamecube for the Resident Evil Remake and I also got an N64 just for Ocarina of Time and a 3DS XL for A Link Between Worlds(otherwise not really into handheld gaming). Granted, many of these systems(espescially Gamecube) eventually had other games released for it I really enjoyed but Dreamcast I pretty much got just for CV.

I don't know but whenever a game comes out I really, really want to play I just can't resist and have to have it right away. :p I'm more of a gamer than a collector though(I play a ton of games but I think I only have like 15 or so games in my collection at any given time), so I also easily give my shit away when I don't play the game anymore or when an 'updated' version of the game is released on one of my then main consoles(like CV for PS2). Trade-in prices are garbage and I don't really need it anyway so I rather give it to some grateful kid or something.

What can I say, despite playing games I also make many a kid happy. :p Though I also think its cool to see the next generation embrace videogames with the same enthusiasm as me. Worth more to me than chump change! :p The person I gave my DC to all those years ago is now a pretty avid gamer himself and he recently said to me Code Veronica was the game that sparked his passion for games. That was really awesome to hear.

Mn, yeah, but that tends to only be a solid start for me.

Like, i'm considering a Wii U for the new Zelda, but I painfully realize that that and Smash are like the only two games i'm interested on the poor system. I'm not interested in mario... variation... 1189. Mark 2.

I would have gotten the Wii U just for Bayonetta 2, but then more games I wanted showed up, and the Wii U already had ZombiU as a launch title. So I suppose my answer is "yes, but context is everything". Oh Wii U, you will soon be mine, but B2 has an October EU release =/

Of course you buy a console knowing that there will probably be games you want later on.
Hahaha that is exactly my case!! I now own 14 Wii/WiiU games not including Bayonetta 2.

There is only 1 game out of 796 (150 of those being PS3 exclusive) that you want to play on the PS3?

I bought an Xbox 360 mainly for Tales of Vesperia, but before I bought I knew that I would also be able to pick up other games like Lost odyssey and magna carta 2, that I would probably like.

The PS3 has a lot more to offer in the dying stages of last generation than either of the competition's consoles imo.

Ehhhh, kinda.

See, I want to buy a PS4, but I haven't seen any games that have made me definitively say "I must buy this" yet on it. When Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV come out, then it might be a different story. Keep in mind this hinges on FFXV not being the pile of shite XIII and its spinoffs were and having real-time combat. I don't like turn-based usually and the trailer for it along with the knowledge it's described as "A more realistic version of Kingdom Hearts" (HA!) got me hopeful it's real time.
