Would you buy a game you probably won't play?

I'm terrible for doing this and I've been actively working to stop it. Whenever a game I was interested in but never fully sold on gets a significant price drip, I usually end up picking it up on a whim. I mean I still have yet to even put the discs for Ni No Kuni, Twisted Metal, Sleeping Dogs and Metro: Last Light in my PS3 despite having them for awhile. I also have barely touched my copies of Max Payne 3, The Witcher II, Valkyria Chronicles and Virtue's Last Reward. It's not that I don't have the interest in playing these games, I just don't have the time and when I do there is usually something more recent that I want to play a lot more...

For games like Ni No Kuni, Valkyria Chronicles and The Witcher though, I do find the length really off-putting. I have a hard time committing to something I know I won't have the time to completly immerse myself in despite knowing if given the time I'd probably love them.

Yup.
As proven by humblebundle deals and steam package deals.

Would I spend $60.00 on a single game that I have no intention to play or keep sealed for collector purposes? No.

I have a copy of Anarchy Reigns on my shelf that I've never played. I just wanted it, since I figure it'll be pretty rare in the future if I ever wanted to play it then.

I've certainly bought games that I probably won't play. But I'd never buy a game that I know I won't play.

while I do tend to play every thing I buy. Especially if Steam is involved.

Dark Souls

bought it, cause I said I would really, I signed on the dotted line like so many others when the petition was going around to get it on the PC.

Then GFWL :/

and still GFWL :/

so yeah, I own it, but never gonna play it cause of that, or least, not gonna play it while GFWL is attached to it.

The Batman: Arkham games, would be on this list as well for the same reason, but GFWL was removed.

There are a few games that I've got in humble bundles that I don't want to play, so they'll just sit there. Otherwise, if i've bought it and not played it but want to, it just means it's still on the backlog, which I really should start getting into, either that or trade them in.

Yeah, I collect, so to be honest most games I buy nowadays I do so knowing I probably won't play more than an hour of them.
I do try to just buy games I think seem interesting, but most of the time it turns out they aren't, so yeah. Oops.

....yes it seems i would. This is almost solely how i make purchases now considering how many games on steam are re-re-remakes all modified very subtley but cleverly and deftly enough that i cant stand to talk myself out of supporting these folks based on my 18 year nerd career. This is why i have 880 games on steam now. Maybe 90ish i will probably not get to play. They are not divided from my normal library though, so i always see their icon as a reminder of their existence that brings back the swell of heart i found in their trailers and bold premises, and too me that's a large part of most the games ive played in the last few years. Somehow i can justify this mindset while working a sub-minimum wage job. Things would get real crazy if i had actual disposable income. Thats why i stay off the xbla

I have bought several company packs during Steam sales. I probably have 50 games in my Steam library I will never touch.

For example, the id Superpack had all the Doom games in it, which I have since played most of. It also had Commander Keen and one or two other things I never heard of and will in all likelihood never install.

I figure, since the price works out to pennies per game in some cases, plus I get a bunch of games I actually will play, who cares?

There are plenty of games I've bought, tried, and decided not to play. I can't get Dark Souls to display properly on my PC and will not be playing it unless/until that changes, I have a deep and abiding loathing for Counterstrike, etc.

I did that once: Shogun 2: Total War.

I really disliked Empire because it was so unintuitive to me as to what I was doing or why I was doing it that I just gave up on the series(I was younger, and I got the game as part of an exchange thing).

But then Angry Joe gave it a glowing review(and I trusted him when it came to Guild Wars 2, which is still to this date the best MMO I have ever played(even though I can't stand them and stop playing within 3 days, GW2 had me playing for 2 months)) and my PC was able to handle it, so I gave it a go(bear in mind, It was 3 years ago when I played Empire, my tastes and attitudes had changed), but I was certain that I will try it once and give up on it, never playing it.

Now it's one of my all time favourite Strategy games.

So sometimes I do that, yes.

I've bought several games that I haven't played much, and some that I haven't played at all. In each case, it's been to support the developer and/or the sort of content they develop.

For example, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate. (I played the hell out of regular DOA5, but only bought Ultimate well after I was burnt out, just to support Team Ninja).

Also on the list:
Dungeons and Dragons Chronicles of Mystara (I'd play this, but I'm all alone!)
Skullgirls
KoF XIII Steam Edition (Played the hell out of console KOFXIII, bought SteamED as a form of support)
2 extra copies of Dragon's Crown (which may not count, as I've given the spares away and played the hell out of mine)

But you get the idea.

Yeah, kinda. Mostly through steam sales. That's where my biggest graveyard of titles I'll probably never visit again lies.
I think this sums up about 70% percent of the coming posts in this thread, including mine. Damn Steam sales, how am I supposed to just sit idly by when you're selling acclaimed indie titles for the price of a candy bar?

I intend to play all the games that I have already played before again at some point in the future. Whether this will actually happen, I doubt that very much. But we'll see.

As for a game that I bought that I didn't think I would play, that would be the Metriod PRIME Trilogy on the Wii. I saw an article on here long ago saying Nintendo had suddenly pulled the plug on that game and was no going to be sending out any more of the steel-cased boxes. So I bought a copy from Target the next day. It still sits on my shelf in the plastic wrap, and probably will for a long time, seeing as I don't have a Wii. It just seemed like one of those games that gamers should own.

I'll buy games that I don't plan on playing anytime soon but I do know I will eventually, same goes for games on platforms I might buy in the future. Since my taste in games can be rather niche and many become collectors items it's just a way to not pay silly money in the future. Atleast I can sell my boxed games and possibly get a return on my investment unlike Steam games which I've too many.

According to my Steam library I'd buy around 250 games I'll never play.

To not play at all? no, not unless it came in pack with other games I want and it was cheaper than buying them without it.
Buying games I'm unlikely to replay? sure. Just because I don't want to replay it doesn't mean it wasn't worth playing. Sometimes you can even get great games that just aren't all that good for replayabilty and I like having a collection of games I've played. I am a PC gamer so I can't rent games if I only intend to play them once anyway.
