I eat them all the time, and to be honest most of them arent half bad. They're really good for a nice meal while camping.

To answer specifically about MRE's though. Yes people would buy them and I would guess they would sell for around 8-10 dollars.

i've eaten them before when i go backpacking. their not bad taste wise but there about $7 (American) i think fast food is a better value.
I usually get 5-10 a month form my uncle in the national guard, they're pretty damn good when properly prepared, which usually isn't the case when you're deployed, in junior marines and marine preliminary exams we had to eat them on the field, most of the time cold cause the little warming thingies are a piece of ass so i can see why soldiers complain, but if you have the time, they are damn good, i wouldn't buy them seeing as i can get them for free 
Military rations are designed to dump a lot of energy into your system. So if you eat a lot of MREs and aren't extremely active, expect to get fat.
The taste ranges from okay to nauseous. The omelette is one of the most hated of the MREs, along with the ham if you don't have any way to cook it. The spaghetti and chow mein versions are all right.
And toward the end of my time in the Army, they were coming out with vegetarian and kosher/halal meals that were fairly tasty as well.
The catalytic packs that you pour water into to heat the food seem to do the job, but you don't want to use them in enclosed spaces since they produce hydrogen.

I would buy them if it didn't taste like a baboons arse. Not that i know how a baboons arse tastes, i just figured it would taste something like that.
The few I've tried weren't half bad, and they really are easy. Add water and it cooks the meal for you in a matter of minutes, how can you beat that? I've tried Cheese Tortellini, Roast Beef, and Chicken Pot Pie. The only one I wouldn't recommend is the roast beef.
I really wouldn't Microwaveable pasta and the such sure. but not open can insurt contants into stomach
