Would You Do It Again?

Greetings escapees, over the winter holidays I found myself living back with my parents in my hometown for a couple of weeks. I got to see and hang out with a lot of people I hadn't seen since high school and I came to one overwhelming conclusion:

I would not go through high school again if you put a gun to my head.

The sexual repression, the bullies, the authoritarian teachers, the jocks and the morons, oh, the morons. I had so few intellectual conversations over those three years of my life I ended up numbing it by talking about philosophy over World of Warcraft. I think what I was missing was that I didn't drink in high school, I took that up later in life, but looking back I'm still glad I didn't. I'd rather be alone and unhappy than dilute myself into thinking I'm happy with a bunch of superficial pillocks.

Now I know you're thinking that this sounds like the rantings of an enbittered geek who never got any, and this is partially true. I am very bitter towards the experience, I was however sexually active late in my high school career. And though I count that as one of the better portions of my life it was still plagued by the insecurities of the teenage years ie "What if her ex decides to murder me?" or "What if she likes someone else who weighs more than 120 pounds?".

Well, it was nice to get that off my chest. I invite you the delightful ladies and gents of the escapist to share in the catharsis and tell your tales of the terrors of adolescence. And feel free to present your rant in the "I would rather [sexual act] a [aggressive animal]" format.

Search bar approved as far as I know, though I imagine there will still be someone to point out that it's been done fairly quickly. To you, you righteous defender of the search bar's virtue, I apologize.

I loved High School.
I had a steady girlfriend for 3-1/2 years, I was the "star" of my football and basketball teams for my 4 years, and spent a lot of time with my friends. It was just a fun time. I'd probably change some minor things, but overall, I wouldn't mind enjoying it again.
My 4 years of college have still been better, though.

I would do it again if I could change things, spend my time better, and stuff like that. If I had to live it exactly the same though, then no, I wouldn't want to.

Considering I graduated last year, I may have a different view. I enjoyed it a lot. But I think I liked it so much because of the people around me. If I wasn't friends with so many people in my class I probably would feel differently about it.

However, I still wouldn't really want to go back haha, I like my life more now.

Met the girl that became my wife, found my passion for life, had a lot of friends and a good social life. MVP all district, and runner up all state my junior and senior year for soccer. All while managing to be a gigantic nerd. Killed Kel'thuzad with my old WoW guild, and got gladiator 3 seasons in a row in the burning crusade.

So to all you high school nerds out there that are bitter about your current state: life gets much harder after highschool, and it's not impossible to be a geek/nerd/weeb and still have an amazing time in highschool, it's all the way you treat others and more importantly the way you treat yourself.

Fu-huck no. Worst four years of my life. And after being in college, it turns out high school was actually a lot worse than it felt.

Do it again? No. High school is the last bit of typically the worst immaturity found in public schools, and perplexingly it only got worse as it got on. I heard jokes about seniors picking on freshmen, but never had to deal with it until I was a senior and that was only to straighten the self-entitled asswipes. Of course I never got in trouble for beating them down because I was diagnosed autistic, and our school did not differentiate between a high-function minor 'mental disorder' and full on mental retardation.

Nor would I repeat college. I made the mistake of enrolling in an out of state for-profit school, couldn't complete so now I am in pretty severe debt with no degree. And because I am a college dropout I can't even get hired for the most menial of part-time jobs.

I recently went back to my High School with my sister to pick up her diploma after being free for over three years. Everything looks smaller. I made a significant friendship during that time, but I wouldn't go back if things had to be the same. Looking back, the subjects and assignments were just terrible, I prefer specializing in University in something I care about.

I had a great and easy time, had a steady girlfriend for two years saw my friends a lot, got along with teachers and had good marks.

Sometimes I miss it, so yeah why not I'd do it again and maybe have more fun if I could take my current level of knowledge with me back through time.

Matrix reference: The real test of any choice is would you make the same choice again? Given that you disliked the high school experience, you probably fucked up like me.

I have many regrets about high school, mostly with relationships. See, I was my high school's "stars in every play drama geek" guy, yet I have an obsession with what I can't have. So throughout most of my high school career, I had girls throwing themselves at me, yet I never responded because I had my eyes set on the girl who wouldn't even talk to me.

This, and the fact that my grades were consistently shit, and I honestly wish I could do high school over again.

If I could, I'd go through it all again, but as I am now. I've just come out of high school, and I'm so much more confident than I was when I started it. If I could redo the first two years I'd have a great time, I think.

I'm actually in my second year of University, I'm bitching in past tense. I am surprised to see so many people with positive experiences though. I wasn't often the subject of abuse or bullying so I didn't have it as bad as some others but I also didn't have any friends and felt completely intellectually and socially isolated from my peers.

Life may get harder after high school, it definitely gets more complex but I would argue that it also becomes more fulfilling. I truly enjoy University, I enjoy every aspect of living on my own and having my own say in the direction my life takes, even if that means that I barely make ends-meat sometimes.

High school is just one of those things I look back on negatively. My high school had a pretty high death rate for its size, a lot of suicides and drunk driving accidents. And most of my close friends became way to involved in drugs, about half dropped out, the others graduated but are dealing now.

Grats on meeting your wife though man, I wish I had been so lucky.

Kind of a double-edged sword. First two years were pretty much hell due to some personal information becoming publicly available. Third year was extremely boring.

But the last three years were extremely fun. Met loads of great people, among them my first girlfriend who is still my friend today. I finally overcame a lot of my shyness, and figured out what I wanted to do for the foreseeable future. Plus, I had soooo much free time just to hang out and do stupid stuff. It was great.

So yeah, if I could skip the first three years in this deal, that'd be great.

depends...
going through what I went through? not exactly fun but a better alternative to death.
going back there again where the work means nothing, is easy and I don't end up in a single sex school knowing everything I've learnt since? yes please!

if anything, not having to get a job for another four years would at the least be fucking awesome.

I would because most of the bulling I went through was emotional instead of physical, and therefore something I would be able to defend myself from with my knowledge and experiences of today. Thinking of which, I'd probably be able to pretty formidably defend myself verbally.

I would also pay more attention in math class.

If I could keep my current knowledge then yes, I'd spend more time trying out new hobbies and meeting new people rather than sitting on my ass all day and having crap social skills. Then later in High School I'd actually do some studying and make sure I do well.

Not sure I'd want to keep all of my memories though, I'd probably end up with depression because I'll know I'm years and years away from meeting some of my best friends.

I feel like, if this thread progresses, you're going to be proverbially spat upon, cast upon by stones, and deemed a traitor and outsider by large moping populations of the community that are convinced that successful people make their lives miserable. Hopefully not, but these threads always seem to turn out that way.

Though I feel similarly. And I even had a pretty crappy first half high school experience, not knowing anyone, then not knowing anyone again, before finally picking up in 3rd year. It's great, and not really that much worse than wasting away more time doing similarly tedious tasks with a similar demographic of people in order for me to pay for myself.
