I'm not sure that's a valid factor to base a decision on.

I reckon it'd be fun for both spouses to have a completely new name.

Oddly enough this is a subject I'm a traditionalist on. I pondered why this is where I draw the line, cuz I'm supportive of non traditional marriage. But I just think it is proper for my wife to take my name. Plus it's an awesome name Jones. I wouldn't give up my name EVER. And I suppose if my wife didnt want to I would have to think and talk about it if I can accept that. Don't know why I think this way, but I do. And if I spend the time to find the right wife, she would want to take my name.

If you're so adamant about keeping your name, don't you think it's unfair to expect her to give hers up without a second thought?

No cuz if I am marrying her than she would want to give up her name, if she doesnt than that probably isnt my first 'flag' and I wouldnt be marrying her in the first place. don't act like having double standards is new for humans.

OT: I'd prefer to keep my last name, for various reasons. Binns has two meanings, "hollows" (which were a landmark near the family's original estate, I believe) and "a leader of men".

Also, family tree researching has informed me that had the lordships not been disbanded by the crown, I would be the legitimate heir to our thousand year old lord seat. We've been in Yorkshire for over a thousand years.

I would like to find a way to change my family crest, though. It's a black face in profile, which is awarded for deeds of valor during the Crusades. While it's interesting being descended from bad-ass lord knights, I don't really want to associate myself with people whose primary accomplishment was killing people for worshipping a different invisible man than them.

Given the choice, I'd change it to a grey wolf on a field of blue.

Really don't give a toss one way or the other. Provided I ever get married, it would be entirely up to the other person who gets/keeps what name(s).

I'm male, and I wouldn't give up my name if I were to get married, but I wouldn't expect my significant other to do it either. I see giving up your name as giving up part of your identity, which I'm opposed to. If anything, I'd prefer to be more inclusive, and use both last names, similar to how the Spanish do.

I really have no idea how this works with gay relationships...I suppose if my husband had a cool last name, I'd be like "sure," but if not, then he can get over it. Like my teacher in high school who gave up her beautiful Lebanese last name to adopt her husband's hideous German one: "Kalbfleisch." (That means "veal," by the way.)

Ashes to that. I wouldn't expect my spouse to give up his last name though.
