Maybe I'm in a nostalgic mood or maybe I read too much marketing related decisions regarding games that I want to talk about this but, here goes.

Being born in the early 80s, it was amazing, this new thing called a Nintento came out, I could move a character around in a really weird environment that I used to dream about in bright shiny colors. I watched cartoons about a 13 year old teenager (Mighty max) who opened up portals to other places with a huge sword wielding barbarian, a know it all sage *cough* chicken *cough* to do battle with a bloody Demon who could conjure up Lava creatures.

Now all I see are cooperations running everything that comes out game wise, innovation is a dirty word for investors, main stream is something that became the norm once they could digest innovation and many... MANY movies suck because they want to be friendly to everyone and end up denigrating the generation that made space movies and fantasy movies POPULAR.(ok have a billion eggs you're bound to have a million bad ones in there)

I for one would gladly go back to having low budget games made by some guy in his garrage if only to not feel like a pawn in a massive chess game, forced to try and enjoy crap because that's all I'm going to get for the most part.

Hell no.

Have you seen the majority of games back then? They sucked, like, really sucked, except I was too young to know that.

Games have come so far since those days, I would never go back. Why would I have to? I can play all the good games from that era anyway. Hell, I have the Sonic Classic Collection on my DS (Sonic 1,2,3 + knuckles).

I was born in the 90's but raised on media from the 80's and early 90's. Seeing many of the things put out today just makes me wish for things I had as a kid. My main issue being cartoons today are just terrible.

If i could, i'd take a energy weapon from the future back to the 1080's.
I would mess the hell outa the timeline.
OT: Probably not, despite the nostalgia about the time, things are never as good as they are remembered.
Captcha: Sticky Wicket.

1. the past probably wasnt as amazing as your making it out to be, but I imgaine you only remember what was "good" about it...the filter of time you know...

2. you were a kid, kids dont see things ciritically they can enjoy things that adults would find terrible

3. in the end NO....the past was NOT better

and its called change..change is the way of things....I can look back on the past favorably but I dont want to get hung up on it thats not a good way to be....

in the same sense I detest the Idea of "highschool is the best time of your life"

to me the current gen of gaming as SOO much to offer and pretty much all my favorite games are from this gen

I belive the future of gaming also has alot to offer

in conclusion...sorry but I think your suffering from a serious case of nostalga goggles....take them off and the world is a bit brighter...(ok that sounded stupid but I stand by my point)

So I have a choice between an industry over-saturated with brown, cover-based FPS's and tyrannical corporations, or an industry over-saturated with ultra-linear, boring 2D side-scrollers which isn't taken seriously by any other form of media?

My verdict... meh. TBH if I could go back to any era it would actually just be the last console generation.

Take off your nostalgia glasses.

There were just as many lazy cash-ins in games, movies,tv or whatever back then.

Personally i'd say most forms of media have gotten better and more refined as both the art evolves and the tech gets better.

And if you are that desperate for your childhood favourites theres nothing stopping you from watching/playing/whatever them again.

TBH I dont think its really as bad as people make out

I mean ok Ive only just joined the PS3 club so Im playing catch up...but I mean if you want somthing good that ISNT a brown shooter you can generally find somthing (though your definition of brown shooter is a factor)

I mean ok as far as games overall go theres not much variety aside from "white 30's brown haird male kills the thing" BUT I mean there is a little variety

No, games were still shamelessly corporate back then and while I can gripe about DRM this and microtransactions that games are still much cheaper and in most cases much longer. People complain about a budget release of Ultimate MVC3 with only 12 additional characters yet most fighting games of the NES era had 1 character.

If we're talking a golden era though then as far as mainstream gaming goes I think around 1999-2005 were pretty much there, games were as expansive or more so than they are now, but still cheap enough that companies could take risks, and we didn't have to put up with all this DRM and DLC bobbins either. But going back then would mean going back to when the indie scene was pretty inconsequential. No From Dust, no Bastion, no World of Goo.

All told I think we're still best off where we are. But if we could somehow go back and stay in the time when everyone was borrowing way too much money and having a good time rather than the current crunch then that would be super.

I'm sorry but your wrong...EVERYONE is wrong

the best times..as in when the universe came to some magical time of awsomness alingment..

were the late 90's to early 2000's...you know, when "I" grew up

the cartoons, the movies, the games, the music was ALL better!

then unfortunatly when I grew up the fabric of space and time began to unravel....give a few years and the world will be a desolate...wasteland without art or hope.....

If you mean back to when people actually read books and went outside and respected their elders yes I would love to go back to that.

Go watch the nostalgia critic, and see how good times were back then. The only things in my childhood that have stood up to the test of time are the Spyro series, the Ratchet & Clank series, and the pokemon anime series, to some degree. Everything else hasn't aged well. But maybe it's because I'm just young wippersnapper, and I should be heard but not seen... wait.

It's not that I'm against 'brown shooters'. Some of them are very very good. I'm just against the sheer volume of them when we could have so much more variety, as well as the almost militant zeal with which fans will tie their allegiance to one franchise aginst another that is basically the same bloody game.

But you're right. If someone ever tried to tell me that their was so much more beauty and interesting gameplay in 'the old days', and that nothing good can come out of big corporations I will point them straight in the direction of Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect.

Nah, see, being born in the late 80's/early 90's ('91 right here) was by far the best time to be born. ;) "90's kid" is pretty much the newest generational label

I KNOW!

I remember back when OoT was released and Links nose looked like a razorblade banana. There's no new games that can compare to that kind of art.

I remember when all music you heard on the radio were boybands who didn't play their own instruments. Those were the days! New music is just shit, who wants danceable high-energy beats with skilled singers and impeccable production? That's just crap.

Catchpa: good job. Seems inglip likes snarky sarcasm.

I'm only 15 but if I could go back to when I was around 7 then I would because everything felt much more exciting and new than it is now.
