How can a game have no story?
Ever played Tetris?

Awww Hell, now I want to go play Tetris!
My apologies, how can any modern RPG/action game/almost anything that isn't a puzzlegame?
don't forget about racing games, many of those don't have a story.

Would you still played either Fallout: NV or Oblivion without a story?

I would have.
Oblivion had a story?!

New vegas... meh, probably wouldn't have made a difference; considering i pay as much attention to these things as a hyperactive with ADD

Nope. Even in an open world game like that, I need something to keep me going even if it is poorly written quests.

I dont really care about story that much, at least in that sort of RPG, I mean, its nice to have some semblance of an overlying objective, but not necessary. I mean, I'm playing through Dark Souls right now and could not tell you what the hell the story is, I'm just trying not to die

I don't think I've done a single main quest mission in new vegas, I've explored and done just about everything else.

Well in Oblivion I just killed monsters and didn't care much about the story because I was about 11 or 12 when I played it for the first time

Oblivion:
YES - Seriously, Oblivion's story was really weak. I'm all about the story in games and I'll put up with a lot of bad gameplay/graphics etc, just for a good storyline. BUT there was so much going on in the background of Oblivion that the story quests themselves were mostly redundant. I've spent sooo many hours and leveled my character up so far without even touching the story on some playthroughs. As for those damned Oblivion gates... urgh. But really, some of the side quests had much more interesting plots than the main story anyway!

New Vegas:
NO - NV's story was actually quite interesting and was of personal interest to my character unlike Oblivion which was all some crazy destiny crap. My character felt compelled to find out why he was shot and buried alive and hell, if he wanted to take over NV for himself, he could have done. But the real hook for me was that the side missions actually affected the story too. Do some missions for the Legion and you piss off the NCR, do the House missions and you run the risk of pissing off the NCR too. Carry out the NCR missions and you'll shut away the House path forever. Follow the instructions of a certain 3rd party and you can pretty much screw everyone over. Plus all these missions mixed together and made you really stop and think what you were doing, why and who it would affect. Shame about the bugs.

So in short, NV's story was very important to the overall atmosphere and experience, while in Oblivion you could happily run around picking flowers and raiding dungeons without a care in the world. Both great games but better in some areas than in others.

well if someone just dropped me into new vegas with the quest log saying "go nuts" i would have, assuming all the sidequests are intact, I am just not a key figure in the conflict between NCR and Legion.
Oblivion:
no but that may be because I didn't like oblivion, not because it was a bad game but because the setting was too much standard fantasy for me.

Oblivion. Kill shit, get shiny.
Fallout. Shoot shit, get power-armour-plated.

Sure!

Would have lost some of NV's charm but meh.

NV didn't really have a story and Oblivion's story was one I didn't pay much attention because I was only about 13 when I played it.
didnt have a story?

so what was that fuss with the legion all about?

it depends on what you define as "story" like the "go where you want and find you own adventure" aproach Id call a story,,dependig on how much the game gives you to work with, I ugess with those games you can just wander around doing as you please

if I had no sidequests or anything...then mabye not, I need a "reason" to play..

Without a story? Meaning main quest and side quests? No, that would of been boring and pointless. Its the reason i dont play online, the idea of killing and respawning again and again is not fun for me. Has to be a reason to do what your doing.

Exactly this, word for word.

Without purpose, what's the point? I need something to DRIVE me forward. Even if its a really shitty reason there needs to be a reason.

No way would I play this without a story.

Without a story (side story or main story) the game becomes about the gameplay and meaningless exploration. These games have terrible combat gameplay. The exploration is fun but not enough to put more than a few hours into it. Ultimately, the game would be put down after 3-5 hours without a story as opposed to 100+ hours.
