When you say oblivions story does that mean all story or just the main? Cause the main I didn't care much for I could live without it but the side stories are glorious.

NV no, Oblivion yes (I wouldn't play it for other reasons, but lack of story wouldn't really matter).

I avoid the Fallout series entirely. They sound like decent games, but the post-apocalyptic thing just isn't for me.

If Oblivion had been a no-story dungeon crawl, I wouldn't have played it since I like a lot of context for what I do in an rpg. The main quest doesn't bother me but also doesn't interest me much, so I played it once or twice and then ignored it. I did, however, very much enjoy the guild-quest storylines, so I don't feel let down by the game as a whole.

Well the story in both was pretty repetitive to even get to and wasn't all that interesting.

Mass Effect without a story though? No.

The thread title: Would you have played these without a story?

What people made the thread: Which story did you like the best?

OT: If New Vegas didn't have a story then it would mean that all the quests would have to go away. Because most of them had a story, though most were very minor skirmishes. But those quests always tied in to the main story, with the many factions battling for control over something.
As for Oblivion, I didn't really play that much of it since I was mostly a Wii gamer when it came out. So I cant really comment.

Wait what? Please explain.

Sorry, I forgot that some people are so thick they don't understand that when people say 'no story' it usually means 'minimal story'. The plot line was weak and uninteresting and a bad atmosphere didn't do anything to help it. The ability to align with 3 different factions or with none and claim New Vegas for yourself is an interesting approach but it seems like they got the idea, dropped it in the game than just left it to rot, making it only effect the enemies you killed in all of your identical quests.
Wow, someones randomly angry. I disagree entire but there we go.

The great thing about them is that you can do what you want and ignore the story if you want. FREEDOM!

Wow I guess someone hasn't grasped the understanding of emotion. I'm not angry, I'm critical. And Nieroshai is right, if you have a problem with my criticism than ignore me.

Seriously, though, the story was by far the worst part of that game. If it had been just the guild quests and goofing around, it would have been the exact same game to me. So long as the Shivering Isles were still there, the main story could definitely be deleted.
I know what you mean, then again I only completed the Dark Brotherhood and the Shivering Isles so the story there was plenty enough for me.

The story in New Vegas is ok, but I think you really have to take the time to get to know the main characters and companions to get the whole picture, and some of the DLC's add more to the story.

So calling someone thick for asking you to explain your opinion further is being critical. Alrighty then, why would I want to ignore you want i want to hear your reasoning behind a story, and I really dont think Nieroshai is referring to you...

I get the feeling you don't understand the idea of criticism. Calling you thick is criticizing your intelligence and saying that NV has bad story telling is criticizing the story telling.

I would have.
Never tried Fallout: NV, but i did play Oblivion, and the story was the reason i stopped playing (well, lack of really, pacing and npc interraction sucked), same for Fallout 3.

I basically wrote my own damn story for New Vegas. Or rather, significantly modified it to insert my Fallout 3 character into it in place of The Courier. In my world, actual Courier... died or disappeared (I never really explained it), although my character did still get shot by Benny (convenient way to explain lost skills and powers). I just tried to ignore all the references to the player character as The Courier.

Oblivion... ehh. The game failed to grab me. The dullness of the game also dulled my creativity, and I couldn't really come up with a narrative I liked enough to stick with. I tried all sorts of things but in the end... meh.

Wellll, Oblivion, yes, because every time I try to play that game, the main story gets drowned so fast I never finish it anyway.

New vegas? Well that depends, is it not at all connected to the Fallout as a series? then, proberly no, If it is connected, but didn't have a main story, yes.
