Would you join an off-world colonization effort?

Imagine with me, if you will, a hypothetical situation in which humanity had discovered a habitable planet not too far away, and had the technology to reach it. Suddenly, a call goes out to anyone willing to join the multi-national initiative to claim the planet in the name of the human race, and settle there. If you join, you will be allowed to bring your immediate family with you, if you so desire, and will be sent on your way fairly soon.

Be warned however, the journey will last for years, and could prove a disaster through any number of mechanical failures. Food, water, and means of entertainment will be provided on the journey, but it will be by no means comfortable, with cramped living conditions and possible medical problems arising from prolonged periods of time spent in a low-gravity environment. In addition, you will only be allowed a very limited amount of possessions to bring with you on your journey, as the ship you're using has a strict weight limit. And most importantly, there's no going back. Once you leave, the ship cannot and will not turn back for any reason, so it will be a one-way trip.

Like the Oregon Trail, however, if you reach your destination safely, you will be justly rewarded. Since the planet is uninhabited, you can stake a claim to any lands you please, so long as you can maintain them and stay within the bounds of the colonial government's laws. You have the opportunity to gain incredible wealth and social prestige by being one of the first to arrive, as well as the once in a life-time chance to see an entirely new world.

So the question is: would you accept this opportunity? Would you give up everything you have on Earth and risk your life to start again somewhere else, knowing full well that it is entirely possible that you will die doing so? Do you think it would be worth it?

Sign me up, I got nothing keeping me here. I'd rather take my chances on a new life.

I think it would be cool to do. Being an artist I can ply my trade from almost anywhere :3 And it would be pretty awesome to among the first artists in history to practice off-planet.

Don't Dwarf Fortress players kill off immigrants with similar "non-primary productive skill-sets"?

I would go, but not before learning up on some more useful skills, so I don't get "left behind" if something bad happens on the trip out.

Sure! ...can I still game and surf the net? And would there be animals? I like animals. If those are available, no problem!

Oh hell yes, I'd sign up in a heartbeat. potential failure, disease and claustraphobia will do nothing to change my decision. it's a brand new opportunity, and it's goddamn space colonisation! sign me up!

Yeah you lost me at the low gravity part. I've read about the weird effects that can have on your health. Then there's the issue of cramp accommodation. Is it just like very cosy cabins, or just berths or worse hot bunking? I could live with the first not any of the latter.

Disregarding those. Yeah probably if my girlfriend wanted to go too. It would be pretty cool,

Well, I'm not dating anyone at the moment, I've endured a military campaign in Afghanistan (for the boredom and lack of privacy), and I strongly believe that humanity needs to span more than one world. In addition to the added survivability, I think a species that wakes up under more than one sun might well find a new perspective on things.

So yeah, absolutely. I'm there.

I shall take several wenches to a large island and begin my Empire! Assuming that everything which happens in horror movies does not kill us. I've seen Pandorum...

A powderkeg waiting to happen. Wait until the colonial government starts butting heads with Earth's government. It'll be pre-Halo, or pre-Firefly.

Well I kinda was thinking about that just this morning, how odd, anyway I would I probably wouldn't think about any of the sacrifices, I would be too exited to see a new world to take into account all those things, that's just how I am, I don't really give much thought to my decisions and seeing another world has always been a dream of mine, but anyway I think I would pretty much leave everything behind because there really is no one I'm all that close to on the entire world and I've left behind everything I know too many times to start caring now, this is the reason why I have no one I'm close with after all, in fact every time I star getting familiar with a place it starts to feel uncomffortable and weird, specially when I start to recognize a lot of people, the feeling of not being familiar with a place is much more familiar to me than any place.

Hell the fuck yeah. I'd take the same odds of harm or death to self just to go to space, let alone see another world. Space is the only thing I really dream about, and I'd give anything to go.

Probably not, I think I'd end up getting very fed up with the planet, depending on the level of its colonisation. If it was an Earth-like planet then I'd go over, but probably not straight away in the first wave so that there's at least some structure & comfort but still some unknowns.

Doubt I'd get picked though. You'd need to have a seriously useful skillset for any government to consider investing that much money in one person...they'd be after the polymaths. Also, the population would probably be relatively small because of this, so it'd be hard not to make enemies.

As soon as I finish school/Uni whatever. I'm all for it. BY then they'd have set up a reasonable settlement/med centre there
