I would not be made to feel responsible for the mass murder of 10 people. As many peple have said, I wouldn't even want to listen to such a sick person and would simply distance myself. In my mind i could justify being completely uninvolved.

Thinking in more of a real world situation, a killer like this would have probably killed before and wont stop killing just because you kill your friend. I could go on and on but its just a simple hypothetical question.

Would most people really kill 10 people to save one? 10 people with kids, relatives, friends. The pain your selfishness would cause is unimaginable.

Your ego isn't the bloody center of the world.
yea but they are 10 strangers compared to your 1 friend, I have a much bigger reason to care about the 1 friend.

That's not the question, you don't kill ten people, someone else, someone else who could choose not to if they wished, will kill them because they are a murdering dick and they are telling you to become a murdering dick too.

If the 10 people were 100, I would still say no. But 1000 people could get me thinking.

Can you really pull the tricker on a person who trusts you and have loved you and yours for years? I question if you have any heart, if you can really put to death your friend, and be blamed by the whole of your social network.

I question if you are even human.

Strangers are strangers, if you don't have a friend you would sacrifice 10 strangers for. Your friends suck.

I doubt my best friend would allow me to do that much damage to so many other lives, so I'd be pressured into killing him. It'd be what he'd want me to do, but then I'm a murderer and I'd be disowned by any other friends I have left, and my family would hate me.

If I'm allowed, I'd turn the gun on myself. That way, even though it is selfish, the pressure is over. If not, inaction. I just wouldn't do anything, I'd have to let the others suffer out of my selfishness.

These types of questions are such loaded questions. Anyone is openly admits they would kill their friend to save the 10 people is not moral and likely won't have many friends for very long if their friends find out they think that way. I know I wouldn't want to be friends with someone who might up and kill me one day because they thought it was for the greater good.

Since the situation is not revealed the question is actually would you sacrifice the individual for the "greater good". Which is the first step down the road to many of the atrocities committed throughout history. After all if your willing to sacrifice a friend then why not a complete stranger. In that case all "INSERT ETHNIC GROUP" are detrimental to society and since their are fewer of them then all other ethnic groups combined it's ok to kill them and save the lives off the rest. This is what the question is REALLY asking.

This is one of those psychology questions that the conditions are reworded in such a way to hide the underlying meaning and get an accurate beat on how someone would react to curtain things. Because the conditions are so vague it allows a person to insert their own assumptions. If a person is truly moral they immediately react with a NO response. If the person is border line or otherwise they begin looking for reason to justify murder of their closest friend.

I'd gladly kill 10 people I don't know to save a friend. Mainly because I'd get to kill 10 people I don't know. But sacrificing one life that has meaning to you to save 10 others that don't just doesn't make sense to me.

EDIT: Maybe if the some of the 10 people were more important than my friend, I'd save them. I'd gladly bust a cap in my buddy's ass to save Jonathan Coulton, Stephen Hawking or Ben Croshaw.

And those strangers are humans like you and me. How are you going to tell someone you killed their mother and left her 3 children with a broken family for the rest of their life only because you didn't want to lose a pal. Ten fucking people with others who care for them and love them.

No, the decision wouldn't be easy, but you'd be no better than a serial killer if you don't choose to save the lives of so many.

No. The ten people will probably do something like "Amagawd, thanx! kthxbai!"

I'm not sure it's because I've become a cold hearted bastard recently, but I would rather save my friend. If 10 people mean nothing to me they will continue to mean nothing to me, I would rather save my friend than live with the grief of being the only person in the family/friend circle that knows exactly what happened, and risking being discovered and shunned.

I'd be much more likely to kill 10 strangers to save my friend as opposed to the other way around.

Hehehh... just 10? You'd need to up the numbers a lot before I'd even pause. I'd take the lucky bastard out bowling or something and set my TiVo to record the news so that if it was an especially awesome death, I'd have a record of it. Seriously, for the sake of my friends and loved ones, you'd need to start threatening entire countries before I'd even consider giving them up. 10 people is just insulting.

No... not because I value my friend, but because I really couldn't care less if total strangers died.

No, would I kill my friend to save say, 1,000 people, that's a more difficult moral question.
