I was thinking, what if a drug or some kind of new tech was controlling some of the population? And after the first Far Cry, should we really have any sort of sci-fi element in Far Cry again?

Personally, I would really like if they did something like that but I'd like to know your guys' opinion too.

Question: what would a drug or tech controlling the population add to the story? Oh all them gun toting hicks you see? They were actually controlled by aliens all along! *dramatic twist music*

I'd much rather go the route of making the villain charismatic and there being legit benefits to signing up with him if you really want to start delving into the motivations of why so many would join a "bad guy".
Though as far as i understand, in this game the reason is religion, isn't that enough? People do get all obsessed over it irl so seems an effective way to mind control as it is, no need to come up with an additional maguffin unless this is a way to sneak introduce alien conspiracy stuff.

Otherwise, if we talking about just wanting to add sci fi elements to this particular FC game..I guess it could certainly add to the surrealness and absurdity of the game, but i'd rather keep it for a future FC game, seems like will be enough zaniness as it is.

considering montana just elected a violent asshat who assaults reporters, supports groups who want to arrest gay people, doesnt believe in social security because its not in the bible and believes the flinstones was a documentary you dont need sci fi tech to explain them taking over a county.

to me it would be a cop out to hand wave it away as they didnt know what they were really doing

Not many. Just the one. And I really wasn't thinking aliens. Maybe the usual government agency or another group invented and wanted to test it out.

As to what it would add, I dunno. Well, I mean, it would add something, but it would definitely encourage different questions thematically instead of the questions of violence, religion, and "who's the bad guy here?" It would ask questions that would be circling around free will and the lack of it.

To be a little philosophical though, let's be honest. None of us REALLY know what we're doing. We're all making it up as we go along. And in that vein, you can see how easy it is to deceive others.

If you really want to go down that route, and it's a view i can agree with myself, then no need for clunky mind control shenanigans... We have the media and the battle for narratives in reporting events, that is way more insidious :)

Actually i'd like that, a game delving into how the media makes people turn into tribalistic fucktards who can only ever see their own side in the most virtuous of lights whilst viewing their counterparts as subhuman demons to be despised at every turn.

Not that i'm trying to rain on your parade too hard, i can respect the theme you want, just feel that mind control is a clunky and unsubtle way to do it, like you went for the fast and easy option instead of trying to come up with a good narrative.

Well that's the thing. It wouldn't add to the narrative but totally change it if they went that route. But the thing is, no matter what narrative they go with, mind control or just a bunch of plain ol' zealous rednecks, it'll all depend on the quality of the writing. I suppose that's the real question. Is Ubisoft actually gonna do this story justice?

In Montana?! We'll be lucky if they have running water and more than 6 people!

Whats with current games being set in rural locations run by pseudo-Christian sex cults? RE7, Outlast, now Montana Max's Crazy No Good Tiny Toons Vacation. Hope this isn't just another 'follow-the-leader' phase like the Amnesia crazy, or neo-Modern Warfare.

Not to rain on your parade, but wasn't his opponent just a guy with a country music gimmick? I mean, go on ahead, criticize the guy that got elected, for very good reason, but how shit of a candidate was the other guy that he still got elected?

OT: NO.

Mind-control is literally the cop-out answer when it comes to narrative, I don't care how it's done. If you're going to go full mind control, you're no longer in human territory, you're in robot or insect hives being the villains. Especially when the last two games have had villains that were actually liked more than the "good" guys for the most part.

Suggestion and brain-washing though, can be fine, since they're more "they have a different morality to you" explanations.

Absolutely not. Far Cry doesn't ever do well when it only does snipets of things. Far Cry is a series were you have to go all in. Caveman days? All in. Future Sci-Fi? All in.

Adding random elements of different genres just doesn't work in the formula.

No. That would be an excuse.

You want it in a new game? Sure, but Far Cry 5 is clearly calling out the nutjobs of America and I hope Ubisoft maintains that ballsyness.

Zombies are boring. We're back to the crazy hillbilly phase again. After this it should be space horror or monsters, then back to zombies.

Usually I'd be all for sci-fi elements in just about anything, but that sounds dumb as hell.

Sci-fi in this game would be stupid, as I'm sure others have already explained. However...

There were apparent connections to Assassin's Creed back in FC3. The next FC game after this should go full throttle on sci-fi stuff, tying in more closely with the AC franchise. And have the player character be a retired military special operator, possibly connected to either Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon, and they have to survive in a territory controlled by a heavily-armed and well-trained force of Templar soldiers equipped by the Abstergo corporation.

It would neatly tie together most of UbiSoft's modern IPs, into one neat little package. Hell, maybe even have the prologue be the spec ops guy hooked up in some Abstergo facility, reliving memories of one of his ancestors. Perhaps set this sequence in 1920s Chicago or New York. Familiarize the player with moving and shooting in a gang-ridden city, then teach the player stealth by having them bust out of the Abstergo complex. After that, it becomes a sci-fi FC game that crosses over heavily with other Ubi titles.

When the dust finally settles, you have a choice: Go back to your old outfit, as an instructor, never speaking of what happened; or join the Assassins as they fight to bring down Abstergo once and for all. Or refuse both, and disappear forever.
