Would you play a game for the storyline?

If the gameplay was horrible, I would just hang it up. I would rather NOT play it at all then get only like, 30 minutes of gameplay, which would be the cutscenes.

If I'm not having any fun playing a game despite trying oh so hard to, well then I'm not going to bother to keep playing it.

Luckily we live in an age where gamers are so dilligent/psychotic, they will make a wiki or fansite to write out the story in full like a novel. If not that, youtube of them playing through the game for all the important story parts and FMVs.

It could have an award winning story line but if getting through it felt like constantly getting kicked in the balls while being teabagged by a gnome because the gameplay was horrible then I would have to pass. It could also go the other way around, award winning gameplay but horrible story and still have the same ball bashing teabagging result that would not compel me to play it.

depends. if it is just the controls are annoying, but it has the option to skip everthing, explains the story line well, or has nice cutscenes, then fuck yeah

It depends whether the gameplay is bad because it's too hard or just boring. I can slug through boring gameplay for a good story, but if it's too hard (cough Mirror's Edge) I get too irritated to appreciate the story.

I hate turn based combat so plot is the only reason I played the final fantasy series :D

I dunno, with perfect gameplay a terrible story wouldn't be so bad. If there was a game with amazing gameplay but the story AND dialogue of the original Zero Wing english port, I'd find the time to play through it I guess.

You just reminded me why I was going to youtube the ending of the new Price of Persia rather then buy it's DLC.

Is this a nod to Mass Effect?

Well, I played it mostly for the story, once I got sucked into it.

Why not?

It would be like reading a John Grisham novel, with a combat system.....designed by John Grisham.

Ninety-Nine Nights.

I'm not that fond of hack n' slash games (they're just a bit too repetitive for my taste), but the way the story was revealed kept me playing till the end.

Well, I played through Kingdom Hearts despite the fact that I'm not a fan of button mashing in games. Well, actually, I watched my friend play through it. So, I guess not.

Story and Characters tend to come before gameplay for me, so yeah, I would keep at it. Conversely I would also probably keep playing a game if it had a bad story and good gameplay... Just depends how good the good part of the game really is.

It really depends on other factors. As long as the rest of the game isn't horrible, then yeah, most likely.

One of my favourite games is Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. It had some severe issues with bugs, and the combat was a little clunky, but the story and the immersion really made up for it.

On the other hand, I've tried repeatedly to get into System Shock without success due to the clunky controls. No matter how much I become engrossed by the storyline, the controls always manage to remove me from the immersion the game sets up. I loved System Shock 2 though.
