I actually loved the gameplay in ME (moreso than KoTOR, anyway), but the inventory system sucked. But I could see how the story would be interesting to follow regardless of the mechanic.
To answer the TC, it would depend on the strength of the story. Bioshock is a great game for its characters and story, but the shooting gameplay was pretty standard. I hated FFXII's battle system, but I played it for many hours hoping the story would get better only to realize that it didn't.
Well put its this way, Dirge Of Cerberus was boring and repetitive, but i thoroughly enjoyed the story, and THAT's what made me see it through to the end.
