So long as being gay doesn't define the main character. I think I understand the double standard, we can show heterosexual and lesbian characters getting it on in games, but gay characters are a different story.

It really wouldn't matter to me, as long as the main protagonist is a badass, he can have sex with whatever he wants.

I would play a game where the main character is a festering wound, as long as it meets a few criteria.
1) The game is fun to play.
2) The story is decent enough to follow.
3) The controls work for what the game is.

As long as it meets these criteria, I don't care what the main character is.

Well, I think I prefer the idea of being able to choose your character's sexual orientation (either at the beginning of the game, or deciding on it later), because I don't think games would be able to portray an openly homosexual character accurately. The only examples I've seen so far were either flamers or psychopaths. Not too heartening, I'm sure you'll agree.

As long as the game character isn't an overly-flamboyant stereotype..unless it were "Bruno the Game", then I might think it over a bit...but honestly, this is pretty much a non issue. I love how we just love to portray homosexuality as an issue--it illustrates the issues with an intolerant society, but it's not actually an issue itself. This is no different from asking if you'd play a game with a female, black, Hispanic, or Arab main character. I'd play a game with a "person" in it..why does it even matter...? (rhetorical--it doesn't)

Yeah, I would.

...

And after reading this thread, there's really nothing else to add. Probably should have made this a poll.

I can't let this pass without comment:

sex is a way of securing continuity of our species. We get fun along the way, sure, but if suddenly the entire world would turn homosexual, humans would extinct. Therefore, the main role of sex is procreation, pleasure is a secondary use that is supposed to lure us into the whole "making babies" business so that we survive. Once you accept that, it'll become obvious that there is something wrong with homosexuals. It's a harmless deviation that poses no real threat to humanity, just one of million things that can go wrong in a human but still allow him to prosper and live happily. Still, it's not normal.
Speaking as someone who has made the choices to both have sex and have children, I can tell you that the threshold for deciding "yes" is vastly different. If you're having babies as a by-product of sex rather than as a conscious choice after much research and soul searching, then you're doing it wrong.

And the chances of everybody turning gay are zero, and even if they did there's still surrogate mothers and in-vitro conception. The human race will survive Teh Gay just fine, thank you.

So I don't accept your premise. Being homosexual is exactly as "wrong" as being left-handed or blue-eyed.

I would be fine with it.

That said, I do also write a lot of homosexual characters. I think as long the portrayal is honest, instead of for shock value, it would make for an interesting story.

Oh I accept that biologically the main point of sex is to procreate, but in today's world, it's mostly about pleasure (save for some societies, probably). I would go so far as to say that most people (at least young people) who have sex have no intention or desire to have children, hence the use of condoms/birth control. They do it for the pleasure. So by your argument, there must be something defective with them.

Also, let's just examine how you think that homosexuality is something that "goes wrong." Biologically, something that "goes wrong" is a disadvantageous trait, making it less likely for that organism to survive. Homosexuality, however, is not a disadvantageous trait; it certainly isn't an advantageous trait, but not a disadvantage at the same time (according to Sigmund Freud. I can even provide a quotation if needed).

And I said "fuck you" not because I think I'm "better than you," but because I'm gay and I actually take offense to having myself being equated to cancer or asperger syndrome.

Yes but what you described is a byproduct of a healthy and useful process. In the case of homosexuals the process itself is corrupted.

I would say that inability to procreate really decreases chances of the organism to survive. Not as a unit but as a species. I certainly agree with homosexuality being a neutral trait. I only disagree that this is normal and healthy.

These were wrong examples and I stand corrected, what I meant was that this is something you are born with (although some disagree but that's not the point), a mild deviation with no real disadvantages for a concerned person. Still, I refuse to accept it as norm or a standard. I refuse to accept "equality" of homosexuality and heterosexuality. I will not succumb to a lie, even if it is to grant tolerance for homosexuals that they rightfully deserve. Tolerance should flow from understanding and letting others live the way they want, not from a brainwash that those to variants are equal.

We already have gays and lesbians in games, cough Mass Effect and Dragon Age cough. So what if it was the main character?

If the game play was good, who cares about the characters sexual orientation, most main characters in games are blank puppets you control until the cut scenes anyways.
On the other hand... Making a game with a really flamboyant gay character might annoy me, but if it annoyed everyone to the point of not playing the game anymore, members of the gay community that like to use opportunities like this might start making a fuss and call it discrimination and demand something, I don't think its a good idea right now, maybe in the future if we've made more progress.

Depends, who's making it, what is the game about, does the gameplay look any good... You know, everything I normally use to determine if I'd play a game.

If all that checks out, and the game is about more than anal sex, then sure.
