Um... I am more than sure that somebody has mentioned this but... GTA: Gay Tony (abridged title, of course)... I'll play it.
Nothing wrong with playing a game with a gay lead role. Not like it will change the play value of the game itself. If the game sucks, it sucks; no matter what sexual preference the lead has.

I'd give it a whirl if it was a decent game, the gay thing wasn't just tacked on for novelty value and it was a well-rounded character. I wouldn't care if it was integral to the story or not, some people are gay, big deal.

Vaan in FF12; it got changed in the English translation (I think; it's been awhile since that whole shtick happened).
Holy... wha~ why didn't they keep it? *frowns*
If I remember right, in the opening thing; it wasn't his brother, it was his lover in the original.

Well if you've played Halo, or WoW as a Blood Elf, then you've already played as a gay character

As a heterosexual, I will be more likely to emulate a fellow heterosexual than a homosexual. They share my same feelings towards the male race and I'd honestly have a problem connecting on a deeper level with a homosexual character in a game because of this fact.

Does that make me homophobic? No, but I'm sure you'd beg to differ.

Does that mean that I think all homosexuals are evil and have no good or admirable traits? Absolutely not.
I think you have a point here, but you have to be careful how you apply it. I could relate to or admire a homosexuals non-sexual traits i.e- Leonardo da Vinci's skill at art and engineering or Wilfred Owens talent for poetry. Likewise, same applies to a video games characters non-sexual traits. Homosexual traits, for hetrosexuals like me i could not see as being anything i could relate to on a deep level. I would be interested in curiousity level, but not really an emotional one. Like everyone else here, i too think that the homosexual character should not just be there to brew contraversy to blow up sales figures, but rather serve a sort of purpose or point to the game. It would annoy me if the gay character was sterotypically gay, i would rather the game presented them as a normal character, because thats who they are- normal people. Assasins Creed 2 did this quite well in their treatment of Leanardo da Vinci . (Altough granted Leonardo's talents were not normal)

I would much rather play as a gay character for once, since I am gay.

I am getting kind of tired of being forced to watch heterosexual romance constantly. Persona 3 was almost unbearable due to this.
The problem for you is that homosexuals will always be a minority, the mainstream media will always usually focus on hetrosexual relationships. However, with homosexuality now out in the open and accepted, i would not be surprised if some forms of media decide to cater for the homosexual minority with a few films aimed at the homosexual audience.

Well, yes depending on, I like serius games so he can be gay but not FLAAAAMING! Like in a firefight the character starts talking "ooooh I just LOVE the decoration in this room!", but a lesbian however, well I dunno girls are girls, if a man is gay it shows much more o_O

If it fitted the story. I wouldn't play a game that's made simply because you don't find many gay characters. As long as the game has substance rather like any self respecting game does. Most of the games I enjoy I'd still enjoy if the main character was gay.

Actually, I recently realised that I play games to be different people. In Dragon Age: Origins, my main character is a girl, and it helps immersion, for me.

Does anyone else do this?

Sure. Doesn't matter to me at all. As long as the game is still good then I would play the game. I'm very easy going about someones race, age, sex, orientation, religion and anything else like that as long as they don't push it on to me.

Yes. I agree 100%. Being someone different in a video game helps draw you in. For instance, I always play males in games although I am a female. I often play evil in video games to add immersion - and I'm not an evil person.

And just to throw my 2 cents in on the "I couldn't relate to a homosexual as much" argument. That's a load of rubbish. How does what hole a guy likes to put his penis in dictate if you could relate to him or not. We can relate to all human beings. I'm sure everyone has related to a character of the opposite sex, or another race. I don't think having a homosexual character would stop immersion at all. It might even help it.

I would; I think it'd lead to some interesting moments, so long as the character's sexuality wasn't his/her sole defining character feature. I think gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender folks get kind of a bad rap (at least in the U.S.), so positive portrayal in a video game would likely help cultural acceptance- if only a wee bit. Besides, some games have allowed the Gay Option for years.

Eh, sexual orientation in a game usually doesn;t sway my view one way or th other, but if I had to choose, probably not. It would make it harder to relate to the character, and it would break immersion at one point or the other, since there's no point making the main character homosexual without doing anything with it (which was the whole problem I had with Dumbledore in Harry Potter, but that's a rant for another time).

First games need to take a serious approach to sexuality. It's bad enough as is, and I'm the target audience (a teenage, heterosexual male). Through in blatant homosexuality, and the story could end up worse then MW2's.

Ppppph, of course he is straight, just like all Russians are pure evil.

I find that it helps immersion. If you can differ the character from yourself, the character will gain his own personality, and then I find that it's easier to immerse myself in the fantasy.

Of course, as if I cannot sympathize with a person based purely on their sexual preference? Silly. A controversial difference usually incites me to care more for a protagonist.
