Would you still play a game if the main character was gay?

I prefer to play RPG's, so having a character that was predetermined to be a homosexual would ruin the immersion for me.

Yes, as long as it wasn't the one characteristic that defines him/her, they'd need a good background and personality (Which for the record with a requirement of mine for all characters gay/straight). For example if it's a hardbitten and cynical private eye in a noir science fiction future who investigates crimes in Old New York and lives his male life partner who is a bi-polar painter in a run-down loft, with a clunky robot butler. That game I'd play.

if they genuinely did it to make the character deep or interesting, then yes, but I absolutely will not play it if there are any sex scenes.

If it's anything like Brokeback Mountain and is a game just because the main character is gay, and they'd like to remind us every few minutes, then forget about it.

If it's like Dragon Age 2 where I'll be constantly hit on by gay characters all the time, you can most definitely forget about it.

Being gay doesn't change how well you fire a gun in an COD does it.

So my answer is yes because it doesn't make a blind bit of difference whether the main character is gay or not.
Not in Call of Duty at least, but it could affect other games with plot lines regarding to love.

Regardless, my answer would be yes.

Boom. This.

Most game protagonists are, for the purpose of the game, asexual anyway, so I don't see any problem. I'm curious there aren't more trans char's in games, tho....
Well, that rather depends on if you mean transsexual, or the more generic transgender. (transgender being anyone that isn't obviously male or female.)

transsexuals are... A little tricky to depict in context, because you'd have to go out of your way to establish a character is transsexual rather than just being male or female.
(Remember, the transsexual ideal from their own point of view is to go unnoticed as anything other than their target gender. So a transsexual woman, in an ideal case would be indistinguishable from any other woman. Thus, to depict one in fiction means purposely drawing attention to them being transsexual somehow.)

transgender characters more broadly are a different challenge, because it would essentially lead to trying to create a character where it is incredibly unclear what they are, or otherwise defying or messing with expectations.
(I can in fact think of a character like this: Nights - from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nights_into_Dreams... - Nights is occasionally referred to as 'he', but in context of the games he is in, it is incredibly difficult to deduce if Nights is male or female, or if he even technically has a gender at all.)

If being gay would just further enveloped the character's personality, then i'm all for it.

If being gay has no change to his personality whatsoever, then i don't care that much, but kinda irritates me that that is just a marketing aspect of the game.

State the game, the character and a yes or no.
The character could be lesbain also but don't say yes because you think it would be hot if the main character lesbain.

For me yes infact it would maybe make it more reason to play the game because then atleast the character would be interesting instead of generic spacemarine.
provided it isn't just used for shock value or as an excuse to pass off a weak charter that you will only remember for being the gay one.

That would be a selling point for me. Even if it wasn't that great a game I'd throw money at it just to support it becoming something that isn't taboo, and make it a more permanent fixture throughout games in general.

I don't know about the prince, but the king is one of the most awesome characters in gaming ever. (Username hint hint..)
OT It would be good if they'd insert a realistic gay character in a more story driven game. The only good example is Persona 4, though it's not the main character.

Yes, it's not an issue. i think the only reason it hasn't been tried in a AAA release I can think is because i doubt they'd do it subtly, it'd probably end up being a stereotypical overtly camp gay, and i'm not saying i've got a problem with that but very few games set out to have stereotypical characters i think.

Lesbian, absolutely. If it were an out and out gay guy, I doubt I would play it though, that would be a bit too creepy for me.

Yes.

Actually, like you, I'd be more interested in playing a game with a gay main character.

Don't really have a game to name, other than Any RPG, and maybe Any Sandbox. Assuming, of course, that the rest of the game wasn't boring for some reason.

And I mean real gay here, not the silly "Cloud on the date with Barret" gay from FF7.

Sure, as long as it doesn't make the character inferior in any way.

Provided I'm not playing that well known game 'Gay Rape Simulator' I honestly don't think something like that matters. Might cause a 'wait, what?' moment or two but provided the game itself is good then details like that don't really matter that much.

Basically what everyone else has said: If the game doesn't revolve around it nonstop (i.e.- NOT use it to further the plot but still bring it up) and use it as a selling point than absolutely.
