Would you still play a game if the main character was gay?

I wouldn't care unless they were made gay simply for the sake of causing controversy. If the character is fleshed out and as deep as a straight character would be, then I don't care what their sexuality is, because it's hardly something that affects how well they shoot a gun/solve puzzles/jump on platforms/beat up zombies/etc, is it?

Being one, I would definatly play it. But beyond that, I dont think that it would really matter. I would play it to see if it's any different on how other characters are portrayed as protagonists.

It depends on the game genre. If it was something like a fixed story FPS where we have no choice over our character then yes I would as it would provide interesting new character interactions so long as it was done well.

If it was an RPG or some such, where the game is designed to be a blank or fairly blank slate for you to enforce your personality on then no as a forced personality trait would spoil the immersion, especially one that was alien to me that I couldn't as easily relate to.

It's all about relating to the character, and how important the immersion is.

I supose its personal preference but I find a blank slate more distracting than a set charachter especially id they are silent

and while Fallout New Vegas is great and everything, all your companions are so cool that I would rather had seen more interaction with them..like Mass effect 2

The character could be lesbain also but don't say yes because you think it would be hot if the main character lesbain.

Making a character gay does not make him interesting either.

That said, I would not mind playing a gay character, I have in the past. My first Femshepard was gay, even...aliengay. So I'm not particulary prejudist

Making a character a specific sexuality is pointless unless it contributes to the story, sexuality in games is optional. Being a bit of a romantic, I enjoy it but I do not need it.

Somtimes it can even feel a bit forced. I'm thinking about for example Anders in DA2. Man, he got gay for me fast. I think he's kind of a slut.

Sexuality can only add depth to a character if it is over-emphasized. If the character is gay and completely in terms with it, so he doesn't have any confusion, or anything to whine about........ then you basically won't know the difference. I mean, for all we know Mason from Black Ops could've been a homosexual. He just didn't DISCUSS it, because he had better things to do....

If it is in your face; If I have to play with a whiny, confused, teenager.....well, that could still be interesting IF THAT is a prominent aspect of the game.

If it's some guy in a standard brown FPS story, but he keeps yelling his pants off about how he's "different" for now good reason.....THAT would be pretty fucking annoying.

TL;DR: If a game is going to declare their protagonists sexuality upfront and EMPHASIZE it, there had Better be a very good reason for doing so. If it is not emphasized, but just hinted at subtly, then it doesn't make much of a difference, although I have no problems....

well, yea probably, but the name "Solid Snake" may need to be changed for the less mature people... that is, the people who already laugh at it no matter how many times they hear it, and the people who would find it even funnier if he was gay... although, a lot of dialogue in game does lean towards him being gay...

That's why I like to play a mixture of the 2, as they both have a lot of unique merits. A silent, blank slate like Oblivion let's you create the interactions yourself and really push to see how much freedom the devs gave you in terms of alignment and choices, whereas the fixed character games let you explore the personal background of what, in games like Mass Effect, are incredibly deep characters with a lot of story to tell.

Yes. I'll admit I'm a tad biased- if I hear a game has a major, homosexual character I'll tend to play it- if only because of that dark before period, with its gay deficit.

But I wouldn't especially care either way about actually playing as the character. This would come up in cutscenes, mostly, and I would enjoy it there, but you tend not to think of such matters whilst spattering aliens all over the windscreen of your mobile tank suit.

Why wouldn't I? One of my favorite games is Dragon Age, where you character can be gay (or omnisexual, really, unless you simply decide that he is gay in an RP-way. One of my favorite TV-shows is Torchwood, where the main character is bi, though his gay relationship with a co-worker is a fairly important part of the plot.

Duke Nukem had to have been gay. No one not DEEP in the closet could have overcompensated that much.

Yeah, pretty much I would play pretty much any game with a gay character, main/friend/antagonist.

I would play such a game, the sexuality of well... anyone doesn't alter my opinions of them. If the game is good I will enjoy it regardless of any characters sexuality/race/gender/etc. I just don't see how it matters as long as its a well told(and played) story.

Depends, if it was an RPG and the character was meant to be "you", I probably wouldn't. I would feel constantly out of place with my character.

If I was playing an already established character who just happened to be gay, then watevs, I'd still play it.

If find the appeal of rpgs is roleplaying somthing completely different to your self. For example i'm bi, large and would proberly make a good fighter with heavy armour but when i play rpgs i'm usually a tiny rouge character or anextreamly intellegent, wise mage thats hopless in a physical confrentation. Although i suppose sexualatiy is kind of different with most men really not wanting to explore sexuality i suppose role playing as a gay person may feel uncomfortable.

It's a bit awkward but you can. Maybe Barret just doesn't fancy Cloud that much

I have played "Enchanted Arms" where Makoto is obviously gay, but not in a "good" way. It's rather ridiculous but hey the entire game is rather ridiculous...
And Makoto is not really one of the main charakters but very present in the beginning.

I don't mind homosexuality in games but it ist quite boring if homosexual characters are stereotyped and over the top gays.

Sure, if the whole thing is well-written, but the same goes for hetero-sexual romance. Which usually is shoehorned in and is completely meaningless and stupid.

I'm lesbian, but there are heterosexual/yaoi- romances I've liked. It needs to be well-written and the characters have to be interesting.

Which goes for lesbian romance too, but I can be a bit more forgiving in that case if they are hot. But obviously I'd prefer good storytelling.
