Would you still play a game if the main character was gay?

Of course I would. I'm a bisexual male, though, so that wouldn't even seem edgy to me. I think it's only a matter of time before we have a gay (or openly bi) protagonist.

I wouldn't play Duke Nukem if he was gay. It defeats the purpose of a proudly misogynistic protagonist.
Duke Nukem had to have been gay. No one not DEEP in the closet could have overcompensated that much.

Yeah, pretty much I would play pretty much any game with a gay character, main/friend/antagonist.
Most guys actually are not overcompensating. It's called being straight and having a high testosterone count. It's a real thing.
Most guys are running around being a giant parody of overly masculine stereotypes, which has nothing to do with test counts. He isn't even masculine, he's a joke, and so was my line, how are you getting so defensive over it?

Testosterone has nothing to do with being gay. I have very high free testosterone levels in my blood and I'm bisexual; also, many gays prefer "manly" men - I'm certainly not attracted to feminine men. I prefer my men masculine and my women feminine.

As long as the gay character was fully fleshed out as a person and not just a stereotype, then yes, i would play it. It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. ;D

Not actually being defensive here. Wanted to see how you would react, if you would at all. Thanks for the laugh.

You kinda missed it completely. Not saying testosterone has anything to do with being gay or straight. Think of it this way. He's already straight, then you add a ton of testosterone which makes him aggressive and horny so he is more prone to being over the top.

It could work in an RPG like Mass Effect, which allows the option of romance between characters.

Yeah sure, glad to make people laugh, thanks for returning the favor, seeing that response coupled with you further defending, I mean developing your joke.

dont see why it would be any kind of issue... as long as the story and game play were well done then theres no reason why not

Yes, as long as it wasn't the one characteristic that defines him/her, they'd need a good background and personality (Which for the record with a requirement of mine for all characters gay/straight). For example if it's a hardbitten and cynical private eye in a noir science fiction future who investigates crimes in Old New York and lives his male life partner who is a bi-polar painter in a run-down loft, with a clunky robot butler. That game I'd play.
That's a game anyone and everyone would play! :D

Of course I would.

If it was exclusively a gay dating/sex sim, then I wouldn't really have much use for it (at least not if it was with guys...), but as part of the protagonist's story in an ordinary game like GTA4, Uncharted etc., it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Sure, why not?

As long as the character was actually interesting and wasn't just a cheap, stereotypical, one-dimensional joke whose whole personality was built around the fact that they were gay. Because that's not just insulting to gay people, but also to myself as an intelligent human being.

My current character in Fallout 3 is a pink air, thigh clothes, flamming homossexual.
My main character in Fable II would basically hump anything that moved.
My character in Saint Rows was always dressed for the occasion... assuming that the occasion was a 24/7 tranny free-for-all contest.

So...yeah... I don't give a damn if the character likes men, women, camels or goats providing that is a fun game to play.

Depends how it was handled I guess. On the whole I'd say yes, though. I like exploring the characters in the story, so something like that could do a lot to make things more interesting. I'm not really for or against it in the most part, but if it helped make a good story then I'm all for it.
