Oh how I would love to go back there.

The OP asks if we would still be here if simple polls, lists and versus threads were removed. If the search bar were used. yes! Of course! Why do you think people are complaining about it. It's not adding anything. And therefore it's not liked by many. If this stuff didn't exist back in the old days, Fire. Then I wish that was when I joined (Or maybe not. I was in the younger teenager years, and would probably have been banned, or hated by everyone. But nonetheless. If I would be as I was now.).

I mean simple polls don't create much discussion. Polls aren't neccessary for anything else than measuring. If they're not used that way, they shouldn't be included.

List threads. Completely useless. The only thing that is used for, is looking up useless trivia about people or their opinions on stuff. It's useless, and is nowhere a discussion. THis is a discussion board, and should be treated that way.

Versus threads? Even as much as they are interesting, as much as they can create discussion. These threads aren't perfect enough for that any more. Look at the older versus'. They were kept on a level of discussion. People weren't flamed before they got the oppertunity to discuss. Versus threads would have been so much better if things were like they used to. No they add nothing but probation and suspension.

Search bar were used? Why yes! Of course! That would make the world perfect. Imagine. I write my opinion on something, and can just keep looking at the same thread as I posted in to see if a contradicting opinon as been posted. I could keep up with all the answers withing one thread. I wouldn't have to look through 15-20 threads to catch all the opinons people have. When it's like this, it's like discovering that your friend plays WoW as well. You both do the same thing, but on different places. Wich means you can't get involved with eachother .. The search bar is there for a purpose. If everyone used it, the world would be perfect.

As for not getting a message when quoted? Sure! I'm on another forum where this is the case. I just regularely check back on the threads. Sure I might miss one or two, but it wouldn't pose a problem. I'm not addicted to new message when quoted. It is incredibly useful, though.

If I didn't have a personal profile, that would be something entirely diffrent. Then pepole wouldn't know that it was I that posted. That this was my opinon. And I prefer to be a person alone, rather than just one of the masses.

If the threads were to only contain discussion on the actual topic, then yes! Hurray! Yip-de-doo! If it would have no inside jokes, no mindless drivel, no derailing at all. No Max. It would be the best damn forum on the interweb. It would be fantastic. When I entered a thread then, I would get exactly what I wanted. Now, if I enter thread like "Welcome to the site", I get seven pages of Max and co fucking about. That's not what I'm looking for when I enter a thread called "Welcome to the site". If that was what I was looking for, I'd enter threads called "Max and Cos fucking about". I'm not interested in anything you may have to say that does not have anything to do with a thread. There's a reason there's different threads here. To voice different opinons on different topics. If what you have to say to a post in the topic has nothing to with the topic, then don't. Sure, you can drift off one, two, three maybe even four posts. But any more than that, take it to PMs. Don't mess up the thread just because you're having a ball - no one else will, because what they're trying to have a ball with is the topic.

Badges and friends don't do much. You're not acknowledged by what badges you have. You're acknowledged by what your post contain. And friends. I use them merely to let people see who I admire, who I like. Who I don't mind tracking. I keep the entrance to my friends list strictly to people I really like.

And last bu not least. Tracking of posts. This would probably put me off some as well. Not as much as individual profiles would, but some. I mean it does give some indication as to how much this preofile have been around. How much time this profile has spent on the forum. The more the profile has spent on a forum, the more likely it is that said profile knows the unwritten laws and such

As long as people still have user names I'll still post.
The community is why I use the forums, but if I can't tell who is who whats the point?

I'm here to talk with people (some more than others) they are the reason I'm here and the staff are the people who make that possable.

I like most of that extra stuff, but it's not what the escapist forums are to me.

The biggest thing I dont like on the escapist is the derailing of threads. I wish the mods were less tollerant of it. Other than that I wouln't change a thing.

I admire you, sir.

It's funny to see '08ers and '07ers talk about how the forums were like that.

As you can see, things have changed - honestly, things have changed since I joined in January to right now.

And it seems that the threads you speak of are allowed, since they show up and stay there for quite a while, and get more attention than many other threads.

I do think it might promote discussion, but there have been plenty, plenty, plenty of times where I decide to not post because I feel that no one is going to read it anyway.

However, I know sometimes when they see my avatar and remember who I am (since no one remembers a name these days) that a few select people might think that I said something worthwhile, and even though slightly discouraged, I do it anyway.

Your space combat article mentioned some things I've thought of before, and other things I haven't realized. It was pretty enlightening.

And I'm sorry that things have changed like that for you.
