Strangers? Fuck that, i'm out the window. Now say if was in the military and it was my squad or it was a room with my family, I would jump on the grenade.

Most likely my instincts would take over and I'd jump out the window. I would feel extremely guilty later, and the spray of human gore would traumatize me for a few years, but the situation would just flash by me before I could think. I truely would give my life for a stranger if I had time to make that decision, but the actual situation with the grenade and all would just be too fast for moral judgement.

maybe all 5 of us would jump on the grenade at exactly the same time and save no-one, or we'd all try jumping out the window at the same time and get stuck.

First I'd look out the window and see how high up it is, no point in avoiding a grenade if the fall kills me.
If the window is low enough I jump out.
Who am I to decide whether these people should live or die? They might all be murders and rapists and politicians, who would decide to celebrate life by murdering and raping and otherwise screwing people over if I save them. I will just let them live or die by their own merits. Who knows, maybe one of the other guys will step up and play the hero.

Actually, it's not true, there are more and better options. A third option which I would prefer would be to throw the grenade out of the window. Then there's still a safer choice, which I'd also take, which is to throw someone else on the grenade.Baconmonster723 said:

It's an interesting moral question, one that reminds me of a bit from the book "The Things They Carried" about the Vietnam War:

If i cant chuck the grenade out the window i guess although i'd like to be altruistic and say i would jump on the grenade for the strangers, in reality i think i would jump out of the window just out of pure instinct without even thinking about it til after the fact.

This room is obviously small enough that a single grenade could kill them all no question, so, the room is small enough that if I jumped on the grenade - indoors - not only would I accomplish nothing with my sacrifice as sharp pieces of bone and infectious flesh flew off in every direction gauranteeing that those who miraculously lived through the explosion would die horribly painful and slow deaths but the fact that it's indoors would gaurantee that whatever overpressures caused by the explosion would quadrupled in force.
In short, they'd die either way.
