If you had the choice would you want to be a spy? I personally think it would suck. You have to lie to all of your friends and family. You can never really settle down. High chance of death. What do you think?

Also i dont mean like a realistic spy im talking about the ones you see in movies that are obviously fake and all that.

[Edit] Why does the poll never work?
Option 1. Hell yeah! thats the life for me
Option 2. No way i couldnt do it
Option 3. What do you mean would i want to be a spy ;)

While it seems glamorous and exciting in movies and games, I agree with you in that I think it would suck. Putting your life on the line for reasons you may not even know and not being able to talk to anyone about something that is such a big part of your life does not sound like fun to me.

I'll just watch a Bond movie or two, thank you very much.

Edit: Option 2 in the gimped poll.

Fuck yeah I could!! Life would always be full of excitement, even the long drawn out missions. Sure, the mission might be boring, but the lying and deceiving is what makes it exciting.

By not settling down, everything would be new and exciting. You'd be able to see the world on someone else's dime, without them getting involved all too much.

Only bad spies have a high chance of death. I'd avoid being a bad spy.

Nope. Nobody would hear about me for years after I died. That is assuming I don't die immediately.

No as you would never get a break as ou would have to be supicous of everybody you meet just incase there an enemy spy trying to track you.

It would be like playing assassins creed multiplayer with thousands of npcs that all look different not knowing who your hidding from.

Honestly, I know so few people at school it sometimes feels like I am.

If I had the chance, sure. I'd be a spy, I mean it's not like I have much else to do!

No, way to many pyros.

I wouldn't want to be a spy simply because its dangerous and lonely. I'd imagine that putting myself through the constant stress of that life wouldn't be worth it.

Most modern spies are exactly the opposite. Remember those Russian spies the US found not long ago? They were married (some to real Americans) and living a modest lifestyle in an affluent American suburb, their goal being to slowly work their way into politics over the course of like 20 years. The thing that gave them away was that they were supposed to give updates on American news and culture to their Russian beneficiaries, which Russia could probably have lifted from our newspapers. Being a spy can be a pretty nice job.

Most CIA NOC (Non-Official Covers) are not breaking into labs or hijacking submarines: they're being low-key and immersing themselves in foreign cultures, especially the lifestyles of the upper-class.

Most "spy" work is actually ungodly boring desk-jockeying, or glad-handing furriners to try and find someone who might talk a little off the record. You would probably never need a gun, and you certainly won't have a tricked-out Aston Martin, and it will be just as much work to get laid as it ever was.

Fairly low chance of death in the line of duty, to be honest, historically.

Apart from that, I agree with the OP. I'm not ruling out a career in intelligence, but not active behind-the-lines survellance. I value genuine relationships with people too much, and I'm absolutely awful at deception, and fall to bits fairly easily. Honesty's the best policy for me, larley because nothign else would work. :p

If it's monitoring communication from an office in my home country, I wouldn't necessarily be averse, though.
