Wouldn't pistol duels with one bullet each be incredibly boring after the first . . . 2. I mean both guys turn and one falls down. Boring. And what if they both miss/don't get a kill shot?

What you really need is a whole host of weapons, mainly melee, so there's lots of action and variety. Then people might actually tune in.

Seeing a real and on top of it meaningless death? Why the fuck would I or anyone else have a interest in that? Seeing 2 people who you don't know attempting to kill the other one for reasons you don't know. Televised murder just for our entertainment? Yeah, that's not sick at all...

No, that would be sick and should never be allowed in any public media or even be allowed to happen at all.

1. Dueling is illegal most places.
2. Pistol dueling is perhaps the shitties kind. If they had swords, or you allowed them to duel with weapons of their choosing, then perhaps I'd watch.

The whole "televised duel to settle grievances" idea isn't too bad. But how about we cut out that "to the death" bit", eh? Fights to the death (unless they are unarmed) are generally short and uninteresting.

How about this (just an adjustment so we don't have the whole 'death' thing):
Don't use bullets, use paintball guns. Also, it's a full-scale battle (cameras on trees, cameras in helmets etc). If it's a draw (ie no 'survivors'), it goes to a captain v captain duel.
Yeah, lets do that. A society that raises kids watching that could create some fucked up kids, and I rather not have Child's Play on a large scale.

If you would let your kids watch that, you don't have the right to complain if they end up fucked up.

I was going with a society that openly endorses violence becomes violent as the people against it die with the new age of youth.

You know, kinda like if in a generation we might lose some ideals.

We have wrestling, CoD, Halo, MoH, paintball etc. We're pretty much fine with violence as long as the children can't see it, and if this were on late at night on pay-per-view, then they (probably) wouldn't.

You can't be serious, this is the single most barbaric and disgusting thing that could happen, I mean have you ever seen a dead person lying on the street? I have it's not a pleasant sight, I mean really promote violence and murder on TV? Don't we have enough problems with violence as it is?
You clearly have never witnessed real world violence, it is not entertaining, it's depressing and disgusting and it only makes you wish you could do something to stop it.

If they brought back gladiators i'd gladly green light a pay-per-view show like that. Big giant ring. Dirt, sweat and blood flying, metal clanging. Would be a great thing to watch. Pistols though... seems a bit boring if you ask me.

edit: inb4 it's brutal and barbaric. I can see where you're coming from but if you have adults who love the thrill of fighting, even to the death, why not let them?

...Why would I? Shall we watch Doctor Who, dear? My Little Pony? Grimm? Of course not, televised murder for all!

Of course, I think the biggest turn off is the fact I don't watch sport as it is. I don't want another addition to the great list of stuff I determinedly avoid.

Hey dude, remember all those movies where people were forced to slaughter each other for sport? Yea, that wasn't suppose to be portrayed as a good thing.

Also, honestly, you really need to take a look at yourself and ask yourself some tough questions. "why do I want to see someone die?" "What would that really be like, and how would that person dying feel" "isn't there a very real possibility that people could be forced by circumstance or other factors into this?"

I prefer the German method of dueling, the point is to scar your opponent rather than kill, you actually wear a mesh goggle mask and body armour to protect everything but your cheeks. Having a scar is a constant reminder of the disagreement and inconviences the loser, but is also a mark of honour.

I could see this if they were on death row or something.
Pistol dueling, however, is more about settling disputes than actual entertainment. How would you milk a 30 minute show out of that? I think something gladiatorial would be better, perhaps with chainsaws. I'd watch the fuck out of that.
