WoW and the hate towards it

It's currently the most popular game in the world so of course its going to have more "addicts". As for people who throw their social lives away over the game... There is an off button on your PC, WoW didn't come up with a quest that said "Shun your friends for this game... complete!" If a friend is going to shun you because of a game then he obviously isn't a friend. I would rather chill out with friends doing nothing but chat crap than play any video game because social interaction is a lot more stimulating.

The only problem with WoW is people who "rape" the game. I've played for around a year now yet I still maintain an active social life. My friends who have gone off to university (I didn't go because I'm studying through other means :p) play also and its a great way to keep in contact with them whilst having fun; yes, fun is the operative word here. If you don't find WoW fun then great fine just don't come down on the entire WoW community by outrageously claiming we're all a bunch of no-life retards. I dunno maybe it's just my philosophy that if somebody's happy doing something then let them carry on in peace.

However contradicting my first point some people are extremely weak willed and since this is a game that sucks you in and requires quite some time to progress your character(s) they simply don't know when to stop. This isn't because WoW is an addictive game it's because stupid people do stupid things. I mean these individuals would be addicted to some other video game if WoW didn't exist so how is it Blizzard's fault? Or indeed based on the minority of people who play WoW how is the entire community "addicted"?

Finally I'd just like to make a request. If you don't like WoW just remember its all a matter of opinions, just because you hate something does that mean everyone else must? Thanks for bearing with my looooooong ass post. (Note: it wasn't meant to sound like a rant... even if it turned out that way :p)

Oh, and you don't take several hours getting IRL parties together, supplies, food, and invitations included? I've got to congratulate you there.
Doesnt take that long to throw together a party in real life. hell the quickest i've seen a party thrown together (this includes going to get the supplies and the people to show) has been 20 minutes.

Click an enemy. Click whatever they drop. Level up. Exchange loot for gold. Exchange gold for new skills. Repeat. How fun.

I like WoW, it's very addictive and also fun, even what it does to people is sort of funny.

I don't like WoW because like it looks like a hippy designed it, too much ugly textures and flashy colors :/
Also because I find the grinding in RPG's to quickly become old and boring, as well as how it makes some of my friends sound like idiots when they go around spouting "LOL IMBA".

Oh and I really don't like the idea of paying for a game more than once, that's just wasting your money.

And when you think about it, most of the content exists in instances (dungeons & PvP) which aren't event dependant on a constantly open world environment and could be pulled off with a peer to peer connection.

You're basically paying a monthly fee to hang out in front of the auction house while being spammed by gold farmers.

i hate it cause it has no story or point to live, its grind, if in an MMO they made some more intresing combat and took away the repetive grind i probably would be addicted

*facepalm* Not that kind of party. I'm talking a large, long, planned out party on a specific date. That kind usually takes a lot longer. Not only that, but there aren't really cars in Azeroth, now are there? Point being, complaining about someone putting together a party is pointless, no matter how long it may take. I would understand if they said that their friend kept talking about how fun the game was and went grinding for three hours. Kind of akin to coming to a friend's house, finding them at a desk writing out a supply list, calling various services, and deciding on people to invite, and wondering why they're not wanting to play Halo.

I dislike the people in here who says that 'it's not the games fault that people become addicted, it's the gamers fault for not turning the game off'.

It's like saying that it's not the drugs fault that people become addicted.
Wow is a bit like Marijuana, it doesn't contain any actually addictive ingredient, unlike cigarettes.
However people become addicted to marijuana becuase they love the feeling it gives them.

So if you think that WoW is not addictive, then neither is marijuana.

(I'd like to say that some users have a stronger resistance against becoming addicted than other users though, some probably just don't enjoy it as much)

Personally i think its the social aspect of the game that keeps ppl playing, i know i am :)
Look at it like playing football or going on a night on the town with your friends.

Addiction. [http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/addiction]
If you stop someone from playing WoW, they will not go through withdrawals and whatnot.
So it's not the game that's addictive, it's the gamers fault for not having the common sense to turn it off. Yes, this even applies to the people who take it to extremes.
I'd like you to find any proof, any proof at all, that the game itself is addicting.
It's fun, yes. But not addicting.

I have a friend who did weed, he stopped because it ruined his sexdrive and because it made his memory worse.
He does however not feel any withdrawals other than that he kinda miss the feeling it gave him, he's however happy to be regaining his sexdrive.

All in all, neither weed nor WoW is addicting then eh?

Saying the game itself is at fault for addiction is ridiculous. That would then, apply, to all things, all things that make a person feel good in any sense, because apparently that's enough to place blame. So let's not smile at anyone, they might get addicted. Let's not play games. Let's not eat homemade meals from Mum. Please. It's called self control, intelligence, you know. If you don't have it, something is wrong with you and you need checked out by a good doctor.

When I got addicted to FFXI it was because of the social aspect of it. I, at the time, little middle school me, had friends in school and whatnot, but a terrible family situation, and it was nice to go kill some baddies and feel good, laughing and playing, like that, for hours and hours, rather than stewing. Rather than stewing I said at the time. Like those were the only two options, and they weren't. This is where some people go wrong with MMORPGs, as well as anything. It isn't, I can be sad or be happy HERE. It's lots of options! People are just too lazy to see them all!

The addiction, in my opinion, that is greater for MMOs than normal games, is the feeling of importance. You start to feel like you will let certain people down if you don't log in. They'll get too far ahead of you in level if you don't log in. They NEED you. And everyone likes to feel needed, whether it is true or not.

I just don't listen to the people that hate MMOs purely because of the addiction. It isn't worth discussing for the five millionth time, you know? It's just ridiculous to hate a game for that reason, a human reaction that is entirely controllable.

WoW is a great game, or it wouldn't be so popular. I tell people "WOW? I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole". Why? I don't really know. I just don't want to try it. If I do an MMO again, I don't know which one I'll try but it won't be WoW. I think I'm allowed to have just a small handful of opinions for little to no reason.

So you put blame on an inanimate object? Wow, that goes a bit beyond personification.

I am rather tired of defending WoW. I find it fun. A lot of people find it fun. A lot of people don't find it fun. Could it be that it is fun for some people and not fun for others, or is someone here truly in the wrong? Don't be idiots. Some people like grinding and staying up all night raiding. Some people are born gamers. Some are not...

Just because someone doesn't go to a party or, as the guy who replied to my original post stated, os missing out on vagina, does not mean they are addicted. I think you can say your friend is addicted when he has not been outside/seen another human face in a period of one month, or has been living off microwave food to avoid game loss time, or has decided that shitting in his pants is best to once again, avoid game time loss. That there is addiction, which I and my friends who play WoW have yet to experience...

So because they become addicted to an item that has no real addictive qualities its the mediums fault?

i have a rather unusual history with world of warcraft. for the longest time, i was a guild wars addict, played that from its inception till about a year ago, after i finished everything there was to do. after a while, i had jsut soon enough of the same game. i can't wait fro gw2 to come out now, but the original had just gotten stale.

after that, i tried switching to wow, and at first i really liked it. there was a point around lvl 46 that i got very tired of the repeditive grind, and decided that it wasn't worth paying for. now i am playing once again, but this time on a private server. it isnt as active as the retail servers, but in 10 hours played, im at lvl 56.

now, on the subject of addiction, i would definitely call myself an addict. however, that doesnt mean that i will give up everything else in my life to play it; i have a job, i work out, i go to school, i actually have a future in mind for myself. besides once some of the major consoe games start coming out (fallout 3, fable 2, saints row 2) i will have something else to occupy my time.
