I don't hate World of Warcraft, but I dislike it. I don't like the negative effect it has on so many people's lives. I also think that there are much better games out there to waste your time on. But if people enjoy it, let them go.

i never liked WOW all that much, the idea of having pay a monthly fee just to play a game never appealed to me.
To be fair though, that's not really a hate to WoW, just a dislike to subscription based MMOs in general.
But it's a circle really. If World of Warcraft wasn't monthly subscription based it wouldn't of held on to the number 1 spot for so long. The fact Blizzard get a steady income from active players every month means they can update the game more frequently and keep people hooked. Which they do very well to be fair.

WoW has become a representation of MMOs as a whole (leading to the phrase "like WoW but with ____" to describe MMOs), and if people don't like MMOs, it's probably going to get expressed in dislike for WoW as well.

Im a little confused with the level of vehemence some achieve when posting about their dislike of WoW. For the type of game it is wanting to be, its almost a perfect game, and i mean that as detached and objective as possible. I realize its not everyones cup of tea and thats cool, different strokes for different folks (my favorite ar hemorrhagic), but when people get so...upset it seems like they object to WoW by principle, the same sort of reaction when people debate about philosophy or religion. My question, why? I suppose post what you like or dont like about the game mechanics and story itself, but if you you HATE it, post why. I mean post why and how dislike for something turned into passionate hate.
I don't hate the game, but it isn't worth playing at all. It is very simple and boring. The quests are repetitive, leveling up is repetitive and only gets more difficult. Leveling up isn't even rewarding, because you get is better equipment at your availability to level up again. The game-play experience is the same for both major factions, and really there is little to do in that game but whack stuff and level up. They should put more stuff to do, such as focusing on the other skills, including mining and fishing. These skills play a very minor role in game. The only thing this thing has going for it is that it is addictive.

Just like every other video game in the market,eh?
I haven't particularly enjoyed playing WoW but thats partly because I don't like too much MMO.
Though I must say, its pretty well designed.

Look mate , i just think its unhealthy spending more than 5 weeks playing a game where completion is out of sight and especially if you pay to do so.

I tried WoW for a little while years ago and it really just wasn't my type of MMO.

This basically describes my feelings for the game down to a tee. There's just nothing really different, exciting or rewarding about it. Sure, you can get that mount you've always wanted once you get into the higher levels, but the amount of time you have to invest in order to get to those higher levels is a tad absurd.

Also, I'm not normally a cheapskate when it comes to games since I'll happily shell out $60 to even $100 (for special editions such as the Master Assassin Edition of Assassin's Creed 2). But I don't like the idea of paying the initial $60 for a game, paying $15 per month (in American of course, so unless the Canadian dollar is at par with the US dollar as it is now, I have to pay more than the blokes down south. It's not much per dollar, but it adds up.) and then lightening my wallet even more for subsequent expansion packs.

I don't really understand some of your critiques. Leveling becoming more difficult as the game progresses sounds like a good concept. If leveling became easier or remained at the same difficulty then why bother to include the mechanic if there is no sense of accomplishment for it. As for "there is little to do in that game but whack stuff and level up" what else do you want to be able to do in the game? I don't want to sound rude; I am curious what you think other actions should a player be able to do in a role playing game.

You last point kinda bugs me though.

Warcraft isn't a drug that creates a physical dependence so the addictive nature of the game must revolve around some aspect of it. If you mean the loot system, a skinner box system can't be the only thing, otherwise how do you explain the lack of success for other MMOs that use the same mechanic.

only thing I hate is subscription fees. I don't care that "you're getting X amont of content", if I have to play a certain amount of time to make my purchase worth it, then I don't agree. at least have a free alternative for those of us who wont play WoW 24/7. if I play only a little bit (maybe the equivilent of a month's worth of play) during a school year, yet I'm paying for a full year (over $100), I AM GETTING SCREWED.

I don't hate WoW, in fact I enjoyed it when it first came out but then it started to change the rules around to make it even easier. Then there is other things like some of the new armours look stupid, how they made so people can just buy mounts and ride them at earlier levels instead of facing the challenges like mwa. I didn't like any of these updates unfortunately.

WoW was never the king of MMOs to me, I always preferred Lineage 2 till they tried to make it like WoW :p

I hate what it has done to the genre.

Blizzard went out and made a top notch game, back when it first launched. By today's standards, the setup is horribly outdated, the graphics are crappy, and the new features are just short gimmicks to lure new players in.

Blizzard themselves have said that if another company wants to compete with them, they need to innovate. They need to push the MMO scene forward with new shit.

So what has every competitor done since? They've copied the formula of WOW to the letter. Like that is going to get customers. If you want their customers, give them something they haven't seen or done before. If you're just going to make WOW: Warhammer Edition, they might as well just go back and play WOW, because its the same damn game.

There's about a million reasons to hate WoW, but mot of it will come back to it's success despite not really doing anything. True to Blizzard's status quo they merely took the best of the genre and refined the crap out of it.

Me personally? I don't like it much because it's boiling down the parts of an RPG that make it grindy, and then taking the plot out so it's basically grinding numbers to go kill bigger numbers to go get even bigger numbers and so on. And after five years they still haven't figured out what makes the plot good. There hasn't been a good alliance race released since the initial four, ever, and the Blood Elves were handled kind of poorly.

I don't find it fun.
I played it in 07 after bc, again in October '08, and again in April '10.
I played through a lot of content across 3 classes (all epicd)

Its just not fun. I really tried to like it, played it with friends even. Still, its not fun.
For people who like fun, kind of mindless games, its too grindy, slow, and boring.
For people who like challenge games, their success is greatly dependent on others, so they don't really care for it either.

WOW's demographic is programmable people.

I have not played a single bit of it so I cannot say whether or not the game is bad.
But I HAVE seen what it does to some people, and I gotta say it's pretty evil.

People hate things that are or well rooted/defined/ popular because they want to be cool and edgy, but they just look stupid.

It's why they also hate Justin Beiber, and America.
did i just describe you?
do you understand now?

I don't feel very strongly one way or another about it. Personaly don't play because I don't have the extra cash for it.

I happen to actually like MMOs, I'm an on-off member of Runescape, but I avoid WoW like the plague. Why? Because it's expensive and addicting. I once had two friends, brother and sister, whose entire family was addicted to WoW. Yes, even the parents.

It's a free country, people are allowed to chose to do something that they might become addicted, smokers and alcoholics for example. I say to them "More power to you." I've made my choice, just say no!

I hate WoW for destroying the story Warcraft III had set-up.
THANKYOU!!!!

But to answer the question.. The hate for Warcraft is just like any other hate when something reaches a certain degree of rep or power. Like the Media and even its own fans, as soon as its looking down on us from the mighty pedastal that we all helped build, we start complaining that we're stuck in its shadow.
A bit like Britney Spears. She was young, sexy and talented and we all went hot for her. She quickly becomes insanely successful and rich and even ends up in a movie.
Since then, Fans and Media wanted to complain.. But erm.. weren't you the guys that bought the albums and published her pictures??
Same goes for WoW in most cases.

Tauren Paladins and goblins choosing a side kinda f**ked up the lore a bit too eh?
