What with this month?s escapist being dedicated to game addiction, it seems almost fitting that yet another news story has surfaced, of a WOW gamer suffering from convulsions due to an epileptic-type seizure. Brought about from Lack of sleep and food, due to playing the game for to long, crazy I know.

This was reported in The Daily Telegraph yesterday. While I myself have never played the game I have recently got a fairly good PC and I have been thinking of trying it out for some time now. So I?m asking can it really be that good?

Swedish charity the Youth Care Foundation has claimed that World Of Warcraft is the "crack cocaine of the computer world". Said The foundation's Sven Rollenhagen: "There is not a single case of game addiction that we have worked with in which World Of Warcraft has not played a part.?
Not that I?m saying cocaine is good, but I ask should I get the free trial and have a shot? I have what I would describe as a fairly addictive personality as it is. Should I be worried? I?m just wondering what do the informed masses of the escapist forums think about WoW could anyone explain, why these story keep coming up, and what is the obvious massive appeal to this game?

I have a very addictive personality too, but I was easily able to quit WoW once I realized it wasn't really making me happy. Hopefully you enjoy it for quite some time though, and once you've gotten all you can out of it you can quit as well. :)

I played for more than 2 years from launch

WoW is just the same as cheap Cocaine.

I gave it up when I realized I was a WoW junkie.
Skipping work to raid, spending weekends at home to raid or to grind for an item, staying up till 3-4am on school nights just to play.

Ive moved on tho, F**K you for taking my money Blizzard, now you will just have to take it when i buy Diablo 3 and all 3 Starcraft 2 games. Ive moved onto now being a TF2 and L4D junkie, least i dont have to pay per month to play them

Yeah, I started to play WoW because i had a heap of friends back at my home town (I've since moved to London) and it helped me keep in touch with them for a bit of banter during the odd 5/10-man instances. Then I started playing more and more and more and... well the usual story.

Then I realised I played too much when I used the "/played" command and saw just how many days i'd spent in game and thought about all the other stuff i could have done with that time. Now I spend that time learning to play the guitar, playing rugby and a whole heap of stuff that just makes me feel, well, better.

I'm not bashing the game at all, because it can be great fun and can have a great community if you find the right people. But it's just about drawing the line somewhere so it doesn't have a negative effect on your life.

I guess it's highlighted the addiction to games, because you can always be striving for better gear, so there's always that pull back. Add in the 'Red Queen Effect' with so many people spending so much time on there, it means you have to spend a shed-load of time just to keep up if you want to remain competitive (in PvP, making the cut for end-game raiding etc). Whereas in years before such games, the lack of multiplayer limited replayability.

Of course, now they add the icing on the whole digital crack-cake with the new achievement awards (which everyone seems to love) and you're on a nasty path to go down.

Give it a go, have some fun, but just be aware of how much time you spend on the 'inside'.

No, not really. I can understand why people would play it now that they've fixed the obvious issues the original game had, but having only played the main game in the beginning, I'm going to have to go with no

Meh, WoW's reeally fun for a bit, and I used to be obsessed in teh 7th grade, then it kind of drops off. Then it's fun again, and drops off again, etc.
And when are they gonna post the Halo Wars contest winners?!

Give it a go, have some fun, but just be aware of how much time you spend on the 'inside'.
I hope that wasn't a double entendre o_O

WoW, simply put it, is a social life black-hole. You play it, you play it, and you watch your EXP bar go up while your friend ship and grades go down. (If your working then watch your paycheck go down.) I wouldn't do it, because, in my opinion, well, someone answer me this: What's the point of MMOs?

If you do start, make sure you have other things to do. I was pretty dependant on the game before I discovered FPS and awesome friends.

I remember a story years ago about some azn kids that played CounterStrike for a ludicrous number of hours straight and they were fully hospitalised/possibly in organ shutdown from no food etc..

Dennis Leary said it best folks. That is natural selection, it's the bottom of the food chain. The smart ones live and procreate while the incredibly stupid ones die by their own choices. Have you had any fresh air today? :D

Do NOT start playing this game.

It will SWALLOW YOUR SOUL.

On a more relative note: Kids ending up in the hospital 'cause of gaming too long is not the fault of the game. It's the result of parents not giving a crap about their spawn.

Yeah I totally agree with that, they could have checked in on the kid. I would consider myself a hardcore gamer. I play L4D, TF2 as well as fallout and oblivion. and so on. But I have never played a game where I have thought, I can't stop right now even for a sandwich

I downloaded the WoW trial the other day and uninstalled it after 15 minutes. I know i didn't give it a fair go but i got really bored of the grinding. Also i would never pay monthly for a game.
