gears of war 2... when dom caps his wife... not WOW for the sadness or emotion they attempted to make us feel, but WOW for the un-intentional hilariousness

The viewpoints in Assassin's Creed were pretty consistently breathtaking.
This. The viewpoints let you know that the creators put a lot of effort into the game. When I found the first viewpoint in one of the cities, my jaw was hit the floor like a ton of bricks.

Honorable Mention: In the first Armored Core game on the original Playstation, one of my earliest missions was in a tunnel where I had to protect this tanker truck from terrorists. The opening briefing was the most well-delivered line of dialogue ever: "Raven, the tank is full of explosive gas, so please be careful." The actress who said it sounded truly heartfelt and it actually made me feel guilty when I blew up the tanker on accident.

Runner-Up: Amy Rose and E-102 Gamma's respective storylines in Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast. Gamma is a really underrated character in the Sonic universe, and his dialogue with Amy aboard Eggman's airship is perfect. It's truly sad that level of brilliance was never reached by the later Sonic games.

Defining Moment: Zone of the Enders 2: The 2nd Runner. Toward the end, Ken's frame is disabled, and you have to carry her up through various levels as a flood rises up toward you. Occasionally you have to put her down to fight off a few enemies, then frantically pick her back up and make your escape. It's no exaggeration when I call that sequence 'transcendant'; it's kind of a perfect damsel-in-distress scenario, albeit Ken is no wilting lilly and Dingo's not exactly Flash Gordon. At the risk of sounding like a complete and utter cornball, I felt like a hero, and being a complete coward in real life, that was pretty special.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I still wow every time I play it. Every stage through the game I wowed. Majoras Mask too to an extent but OOC was the first proper 3d game I remember playing and going from the snes zelda to that was amazing

The first time I saw the gas-station on No Mercy in Left 4 Dead explode. Mainly because I was in it at the time. Damn damn AI.
Had the same with the plane crash in Dead Air.
But really, I've got way too many awesome "wow!" moments in gaming, I couldn't even post the most important one's, just too many of them.

No, I agree. Lots of wow-moments in that game.
Could have been better, but I guess they will look at the criticism and fix it for ME2.

Come on! You could've mentioned 'Portal' because Portal is a 'WoW' game (not World Of Warcraft WoW but just wow) and the Cake was not a lie!
No...just...no, that is not cool man!

Back on topic before I arouse the proverbial wrath of others, I would have to say the first time I was killed by a facehugger in AVP (it came from out of nowhere so it was more of a, and I quote, 'HOLY SHIT!' moment than a 'wow').

I have a lot of wow moments at gears of war (1&2) but they sound more like whooooooW!!!! yeah baby! (yes I always try to be cole, and my buddie baird :D)

biggest wow moment was when i got outside of the tutorial dungeon in oblivion, the xbox 360 was just out for 4 month's and when i saw that lake and trees i was stunned by the graphics (first next gen game for me)

another when i first encountered rome total war... just wow (never saw any total war games before that)

When I finished World at War I had a wow moment. Of course I knew that a lot of people died during WWII, but I never imagined that it was 60000000 people.

And I once had a wow moment in Modern Warfare, my team lost but I still managed to score more than anyone else.
