They still hold most of the market and the word and genre that is MMOG will be forever attached to the name World of Warcraft. So they 5 million players but the name will echo forever in gaming history.

Shows how fast people are to slam on a good game. The Chinese servers have been down for quiet a while. They switched their hosting servers quiet a while ago. It's not new news that the Chinese servers have been down. Majority of the Chinese wow population have turned to Aion online until Wrath of the Lich King is released in china.

It also doesn't help that the Chinese government is flipping feces over the in game non combat panda pet released with the original wow collectors edition. Not to mention the first guild in the world to defeat Yogg-Sarron 0 keepers (hardest boss in the game at the moment) was Chinese on the tiwan servers. This 5 million thing will rise back once blizzard can get their servers back in china.

I'm sure they're gutted.

Only 5 million.
Yeah, how will they ever survive with only 5 million paying subscribers?

I just talked to a friend of mine who knows how blizzard operates. Apparently blizzard doesn't operate the servers in china, just licenses it. So Blizzard has pretty much nothing to do with the Chinese servers being down.

I thought WoW was a largely American game anyways. 5 million subscribers is still plenty to keep it going, sadly.

I'm actually pretty happy to hear stuff like this. I don't so much hate Blizzard or WoW as opposed to just hating what it does to the market with its sheer size. Right now a game is considered a failure for under 1 million players, whereas pre WoW a game with 10,000+ was pretty solid in a lot of cases, and 100,000 was doing very well. It just stifles the markets with its own kind of bandwagon effect: If its under a certain large number near a million, the game isn't worth any investment.

The only way wow is gonna die is from blizzard fucking themselves over, like they are with the new art models, constant bugs, and INSTANCE PROBLEMS, and even more. I personally think the only thing keeping it alive is the storyline that i've loved since wc1

Oh my god. Today, the human population increases by 5 million.

I drop a tear for the lost souls still trapped in that horrible place.
