Though details are (Obviously) light, Wreck It Ralph 2 has been confirmed by Disney. At least two of the original characters (Penelope and Ralph) appear to be confirmed by the image above, as is the setting - The arcade is hitting the internet.

I personally loved Wreck It Ralph, but I have some misgivings about a sequel. On one hand, it's nice Disney believes in it enough to go for it. A lot of the muscle behind Wreck It Ralph also worked on Zootopia, and they're all back in on this sequel. So it appears Disney has avoided rushing back to the 1 billion dollar tit that is anthromorphic animals, and is letting that movie take a breather while working on this less successful franchise.

On the other hand, I'm not sure what their going for on this one. Do Ralph and Penelope have another story to tell? The only thing I can think of is that maybe they'll have to deal with meeting other copies of themselves from other arcades or something.

So, opinions? Speculations? Rage filled rants against the cuteness that is modern cinema, or tear filled sob stories about Zootopia being on holiday?

EDIT: Also, the film 'Gigantic' has been pushed back.

Ugh give me some blood and tits and brooding and dark and grey color palette than this........Just kidding ;)

I'd see it if only they have Mario as a full fledged character than a glorifyed Cameo ala Sonic.

I'm looking forward to this.

I wonder how exactly they connect to the internet? The cable somehow got force into an ethernet cable or some kind of surge?

Aren't modern arcades internet capable, with world wide leader boards and stuff? Maybe their arcade is just getting upgraded, or the router/modem that was keeping them bottled up in the arcade broke. Or maybe Wreck It Ralph finally gets decommissioned and they're looking for a new home.

I guess we'll figure out when the movie releases. If it manages to tell another good story, then yes. If it is a soulless cash grab, then no.

At the time, I do struggle to imagine where this would lead, though. The first was a self-contained story, but it also had a much larger world than we saw. There was at least a little more there to work off of than what Toy Story had after its first movie, and Toy Story 2 & 3 turned out OK.

I suppose that's true. Just makes me nervous - I don't want it to be pointless and money grabby (And I think if they were going for a money grab, Zootopia 2 would be the more obvious choice), but it's a distinct possibility that wont become clear for at least another year.

To answer your questions:

-Haven't seen Wreck-it Ralph, but in theory, I think more of a case for it having a sequel can be made than some other Disney movies. The original depicts arcade games, and given how far technology has come since then, how Ralph and co. would fit in (or even if an arcade could survive the modern era outside Japan) would be an interesting topic. Admittedly they did touch on this in the original (Hero's Duty=Call of Duty and whatnot), but I can see a case for this existing.

-On the flipside, I'm a bit miffed out of my own personal prejudices. Disney's been killing it in recent years, and looking at the Disney Animated Canon, outside Rescuers Downunder, I don't think they've ever done a sequel. That's a very rare thing in animation. It's the general principle of time and money going to a sequel that I'd rather be spent on a new film (but of course that's just me being cantankorous).

-Though on the note, I will give the DAC credit in that it doesn't have its "staple franchise." To illustrate, Blue Sky has Ice Age, Illumination has Despicable Me/Minions, Dreamworks has multiple staple series, and even Pixar could be argued to have Toy Story as its staple franchise. And I do get it, don't get me wrong - I can appreciate the financial need for safe, sequel films that allow you to take risks, but while Disney has its franchises to be sure, within the DAC itself, there's still a lot of originality.

-It's a shame about Gigantic being pushed back. I've been interested in that for awhile. Though even that's fallen into the backseat because of Moana.

-Overall, at some point I'll have to see the original Wreck-it Ralph. At the very least, I'm more onboard for this getting a sequel than Frozen (and I actually quite like Frozen, just think it's far more self-contained in its setting and plot).

-Also, the image. Anyone else getting a Tron flashback?

I think they should scrap it and do a video game based remake of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?".

Don't worry. I am very sure they will release a psedo sequel in VHS format to milk it to death.
Just read the comic I suggested and you will be fine. He already made a new comic.

Piracy.
Seriously, this is the only thing I thought when I heared arcades and internet together.
Maybe our heroes will learn that Piracy isn't so bad after all.

Cool I guess. I liked the first on enough, though I felt they squandered the video game setting.

...Really? How do you figure that? I think they did a rather good job with the setting, far better then just about any "Real" Video Game movie anyway.

OT: Kinda a pipe dream but I'd love if they either have a "Mahvel Vs Capcom" reference or they do a fight scene in a traditional Fighting Game sense.
High level FGC play is fucking nuts and I think they could do something really hype with that.

As I'm sure many are, I'm excited but also a little worried.

Excited for how good it could be, but worried at how horrid it also could be.

...and I'll need to wait four years to learn which it is.

Eh, the first one sucked, so hopefully it can be at least laughably bad this time.
