Not impressed. The first movie was an incredible journey of self discovery, this movie looks like a journey of shallow blatant product placement and cheap jokes. Nice attempt at lampshading the Princess cliches BTW. It wasn't funny, but good effort.

Okay, bear with me, but...am I the only one who's getting reminded of the Emoji Movie? And feel there's a double standard here in regards to product placement, where the Emoji Movie got shat on it for it, but this film still seems to be getting positive buzz?
Because the people that ridiculed the Emoji Movie are Disney Biased Sycophants?

Everyone ridiculed the Emoji Movie. Loving Disney can't account for that alone.

I think the Emoji Movie reputation for badness is overrated, Foodfite is still on the pedestal for worse animated movie ever for me.

Kinda this.

I loved the hell out of the first movie, and the whole secret conspiracy going on, plus the while self-discovery thing. The fact it was running on video game logic was just incredible icing on an already great cake.

This one? ...Ehhhhhh...I'm two trailers in and I'm like "what the hell is the movie ABOUT? So far it just looks like references and gags"

Natemans said:
I'm hoping this is good, but the trailers are really kinda turning me off. A lot of it feels like constant references and Disney glorifying all of the fact it owns all these properties. The princess bit was alright I guess.
This. It feels like a giant Disney commercial and little else. Like...When the search bar guy is asked for the most intense site ever, I was half expecting it would cut to the heroes walking out of an alley with a sign referencing 4chan or something, looking shell shocked and going "Why the hell does this place exist?!"

But no, they go to Disneyworld instead.

The princess thing wins me over just because they all bust out weapons (and a broken glass slipper) to threaten Vanellope and then later she's all "Are you girls ok?! *whisper* Do you need me to call the police?" Those are pretty funny. XD

Overall, though...I'm getting VERY unsettling vibes to the Emoji movie here...I hope I'm wrong, but I'm getting that impression.

No, I've seen several people compare it to Emoji Movie. And that has me worried too along with Disney glorifying all of the properties its got.

Emoji Movie: The Sequel.
Oh, so it's not just me? I feel vindicated, but also even more worried.

I'm not talking about the actual quality/lack of it for the Emoji Movie (haven't seen it, so can't comment), but this does seem like the same basic principle. I can at least say that this film is made by Disney, and is advertising Disney things, but in a way, that kind of makes it worse. Like, is this a film, or a promotion?

Also, it seems like a lost opportunity to go into the Internet overflowing with Disney stuff and have nothing from Tron (not that I've seen anyway). I mean, if you want to promote your IPs Disney, would it be so hard to promote your more obscure ones?
I don't think it's quite the same. There's definitely a hint of what you're mentioning though. It does feel a bit sellout-ish with all the meme jokes and self-aware humor that has popped up on the net constantly.

Still, I think a big part of the Emoji backlash was people asking "What can someone possibly do with a movie about emojis?"

Wreck-it Ralph was about game characters, who may generally be shallow as far as characters go in the real world, but they're still characters. A movie about emojis on the other hand is kind of like making a movie about punctuation marks, only hipper and trendier in a "This is what kids love, right?" sort of way.
Not sure if that was your take on the Emoji movie, or if you're just paraphrasing the thought process of people regarding the Emoji movie, but that's pretty much complete hogwash.

You can make a movie about anything by adding personalities to things and creating a story around them.

Children's toys, cars, planes, trains, household appliances, insects, to name a few.

Undeadsuitor beat me to it, but I don't remember the Wreck it Ralph's trailers representing the content of the movie at all. It lured me in with references, nostalgia, good animation/design and delivered more than expected. Of course there is a possibility that the movie will be a shallow shell of what once was, but the first movie was good enough that I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Wreck it Ralph the movie was a heartfelt journey of self discovery

Wreck it Ralph the trailers were a bunch of video game sight gags and nostalgic references that made no references to the larger plot till like the last trailer

These early trailers are never a good gauge at what the movie is going to be about
No, not really. The earliest trailer I remember seeing for Wreck-it Ralph showed him in the bad guy support group and saying he doesn't want to be a bad guy anymore. That hinted at an interesting story beyond the site gags and references.
This new one only has the site gags and references and they're not even good site gags and references. The only one that was kinda funny was the Search Bar.
