"Author Tom Clancy has died at the age of 66, sources with his publisher and family tell CNN." -- CNN

CNN.com (no full link yet)

The mans name is attached to dozens of video games, most notably Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, and of course Splinter Cell. Not sure how much input he had on the games bearing his name, but it's always sad to lose someone, in my opinion, regardless.

In the wider entertainment world he was known for The Hunt For Red October, The Sum of All Fears, and many other books and stories, many of which became Hollywood blockbusters.

He had nearly unprecedented access to the military's workings, but stated he would never endanger armed services men and women, many of whom were fans of his work, by writing about classified strategies and tactics.

He has at least one more book, titled Command Authority, due out in December.

This is truly a loss for all entertainment worlds today.
Rest in peace.

Never read any of his books(I prefer non-fiction) but his name will live on in many great games to come no doubt. The latest Splinter Cell Blacklist was freakin awesome and probably my favorite stealth game this gen. I enjoyed the Rainbow Six Vegas games a lot as well. As far as I know this was one of the first games that inorporated that 'cover' mechanic.

I'm sure there's a Ghost Recon joke there somewhere.

Seriously though, RIP Tom Clancy, I thoroughly enjoyed many of the games that bore your name.

Always thought his books were terrible, still...sucks to hear he's gone at such an early age.

I was never really a fan of his politics, I guess the nicest thing I can say is that I enjoyed Rainbow Six Vegas 2 a LOT! Farewell, Mr. Clancy.

Yeah, RIP.

So, how are we gonna pronounce the next Ghost Recon title? Tom Clancy's Ghost: Recon something? That would be awesome!

And there's your Ghost Recon joke.

So I just read on Google news that Tom Clancy died. He was only 66. Definitely a little bummed about it. While I wasn't a fan of his political views, the technical knowledge in his books was unsurpassed. Not bad for a former insurance salesman.

I swear I read that when The Hunt For Red October was published, Clancy was debriefed in a meeting attended by Colin Powell due to certain technical details that were acquired through the Freedom of Information Act. I haven't read many of his books, but I would have to say The Cardinal of the Kremlin is my favorite.

One thing's for sure, I won't be surprised if a former President or two show up at his funeral, in addition to some nameless, anonymous looking people. These won't be heads of state or politicians but rather the people that Clancy wrote of in his books. The men and women who did black bag jobs or "Second Story" men if you will. NOCs and Operations folks. Clancy wrote their stories because they're not allowed to by law.

Rest in peace, Tom.

Damn, just saw it on another site as well.

I've always loved his works, both fiction and non, and some of his earlier games before he was removed from the process. Sad to see another thing that helped form my youth disappear from the world.

I read that some of the information he didn't have access to he just made up, but he guessed correctly about some of it. So they sent people in Black Suits to his house to ask him how he found out the details. So he asks which particular details he guessed right, and they couldn't tell him, of course. Not sure how that conversation ended.

I'm really upset about that. He inspired me to be a writer. I really wanted to meet him one day.

Rainbow 6 is the best book I've ever read both from a story standpoint and a writing standpoint.

indeed this is upsetting, i'm wondering where how his series of novels will be handled when being translated into games and such now that they will no longer have his input

R.I.P. Tom Clancy, you were a great author. I enjoyed his novels, it's sad to loose him this early. I mean 66 isn't exactly that old.

RIP Tom Clancy.

I don't know what I'd say is my favorite piece of the Clancy franchise, though. Part of me wants to say Rainbox Six: Vegas, because of how much fun I had playing it cooperatively with my university roommate. But another part of me wants to say H.A.W.X. because of how much I've loved arcade-style air combat games ever since playing Aerofighters Assault back in the N64 days.

Seconded!

I loved Rainbow Six and was really disappointed that it never became a franchise. One of my favorite novels period and easily my favorite Clancy book.

We've lost ourselves a great writer and I for one have a sad now.

RIP Mr. Clancy
