Hey all,

I was hoping to send a call out to the writing community here on The Escapist forums and gauge your reactions to something, as I'm finding myself in something of a creative and (I suppose) ethical dilemma;

I've been developing a story for the last duple of months for a comic strip, it's a WW1-set horror story with something of a Lovecraftian bent to it. That "bent" has reached such a degree that I'm putting serious consideration to including elements of the Cthulhu mythos (obviously, the elements that are in the public domain), even going so far as to include references to Cthulhu himself (without necessarily mentioning him by name).

I guess what I'm wondering is this;

Is this okay? Is this something that people readily accept, or do folks turn their noses up when a schmuck like me comes along with what's tantamount to fan fiction? Do people view this as exploitative, or do they view the Cthulhu mythos on the same level of "fair game" as the Greek or Norse gods?

I guess that last question is the one that's playing on my mind more, as I don't want people to feel that I'd be doing this to exploit Lovecraft's name, but that I'd be genuinely doing it out of appreciation for his work. I don't know, I just wanted to throw the question out there, is this something that people are generally okay with, or would i just be opening myself up to a whole world of criticism for it?

Fuck other people. I don't know about buying it, but people eat up anything that is good and includes Cthullu. The mythos was built on derivative works. If southpark can touch it, you can touch it.

Well I if I were to get into Cthulhu I wouldn't start from anywhere but Lovecraft's version and take it from there. You're obviously entitled to do whatever you want with stuff that's in public domain but I expect it will appeal to people who are already well into the mythos.

As long as you intend to treat the source material with respect and don't mess with things that are already considered canon (either intentionally or accidentally) I don't think you will get substantial fan backlash, although including some sort of informative notice in the intro/blurb to explain to readers that the story does use the actual mythos of HP Lovecraft, and why you chose to do this, might be a good idea.

Go for it, Cthulhu Mythos has been fair game since its creation and it even started as an amalgamation of the works of late 19th century early 20th century writers. If you make an interesting story, there won't be a problem, I mean just look at True Detective, a wildly popular show that frequently references the King in Yellow.

Anything regarding the HP Lovecraft works is usually regarded as fanfiction, but that's not to say you shouldn't do it.
