I know several Escapists are writers, writers-in-the-making, potential/aspiring/budding or even highly recognized writers. One thing that, for me, defines fiction are the characters. The best story can be ruined by having unoriginal, derivative or unlikable characters.
So here's the question: are there any of your characters that you are particularly proud of? If so, then please, show us. Tell us about them, their backstory, their motivations, their goals, their relationships, even how they look (hell, draw a picture if you like).

This, of course, can apply to artists, webcomickers (?), et cetera, who like to have a recurring character in their art.

My favourite character created by me is called Sohala Nikoufar. She's a day-time thief, night-time prostitute living in the Alamut fortress, in Persia (modern-day Iran). She's thirty-nine, and it's starting to show. She's crafty and resourceful, sometimes even witty (without falling into Mary-Sue range). She's very friendly to the Hashshashin (an zealous, fanatical Hashshashin sect), particularly the one she knows as Ismail (whom she has some rather deep feelings for - and it's the first time she has felt this way, and doesn't know what to do about it), although she despises their leader, Hassan. She's physically weak but very driven and resolute when the chips are down. Her mother is dead, and she's never met her parents. She's distrustful of people until they've proven themselves trustworthy, due to a lifetime of being backstabbed and betrayed by those she thought of as friends. She's just learning to read and write by Hassan himself, which she has mixed feelings for.

Here's her introductory paragraph:

Sohayla looked at herself in her little pocket mirror. The years were starting to show. Her deep black eyes were now surrounded by tiny wrinkles which curled and curved around them, as if trying to avoid touching them. Her lips, once pout and fleshy had begun to grow thin. The slightest movement of her eyes would cause lines to start appearing on her forehead. Her cheekbones were more prominent than ever, and she thought this disgusting, since it reminded her of her deceased mother, whose cheekbones, at the age of fifty, were practically identical to to Sohayla?s. She hated to think of it that way, although her mother had always been a very beautiful woman.

Well, enough textwalling. I'm more interested in YOUR characters, settings, cities, governments, anything you've created that you are very very proud of!

Go!

It would have to be Spuddy Goldberg. 17th in line to the title of Duke, right after cousin Bubba from the mountains. He has 2 livers, and dies at the end of the story.

I'll elaborate a bit. The govenment kills him for knowing that they are going to kill Emporer Jimmy. He is a blackmailer.

In the process of writing... well, vampires are a subject. Not sparkly vampires.

Just another twist on the gimmick of what vampires are weakened by. Vampires are weakened by what they had an aversion too in life (allergic to garlic, weakened by garlic, sun, etc).

One of the side characters is a vampire and had a wool allergy in life, so he doesn't wear clothes and avoids people in an ancient forest. Because he thinks it's the 1500's from his extended seclusion, he doesn't know cotton or polyester exists, and doesn't eat people because he thinks they have wool clothes.
Hah! I like that. It has the right balance of bizarre and believable. Very Discworldly (and that is a GOOD thing)

Jason Vault. He harnesses light into energy to attack. He is an orphan who was adopted by other parents.

Oj, and he lives in a world where everybody is born with an "element" type thing they can use. Kind of like Avatar.

Unfortunately I am not a writer. My dreams of becoming one were dashed by mean highschool teachers. I do think I wrote up a basic character while drunk one evening.
I will post it if I can find it.
Edit: Aha, found it!
Wow this is terrible. There is no story, just a basic character outline.

From what I can read from my drunken garble note the characters name is Joseph "The Jelleybeaner" Marione.
He was traumatized as a child by his mother. She did some horrible sexual things to him involving jellybeans. He became a sociopathic rapist murderer. His crimes all involve jellybeans. He is short balding caucasian man of scottish heritage. He also leads a somewhat normal life as a male maid.

The rest is garbled nonsense.

My most interesting is Falcon from a book I am writing called Red Crow. He is an elite member of an evil cult. The beginning of the story follows him training his new apprentice: Crow. He is immortal and I'm not sure how old he is, but he looks about 40-ish. He wields a longsword called Eldaron, which he forged over the Elder's Flame, a flame that every elder is cremated in. He is a weapon specialist in a cult based off of magic but is easily one of the most powerful members of the organization. His history is a sort of puzzle that his apprentice, and the reader, piece together throughout the book.

Thanks! Do you write much? I haven't told anyone about this idea yet and I'm glad it received a little positive reception from another writer.
I think calling myself a writer would be a bit too much, but I do enjoy writing very very much, and, at the risk of sounding pompous, believe I'm better than the Average Joe at it. I also write poetry when the mood strikes me, but I'm not very good at it. Anytime I need a creative outlet, or I need to get an idea into paper, I rush to my laptop and type away.

Beginning of the novel from which Sohayla comes: http://clashero.deviantart.com/art/Alamut-revised-94362690

Simple, short poem: http://clashero.deviantart.com/art/Wanderlust-121023380

Villanelle: http://clashero.deviantart.com/art/Guernica-94110328

Those are my three favourite pieces of writing. I have a few short stories I like but they're in Spanish, and if translated would lose all their charm.

How about you? Have you written anything worth mentioning yet?

Harrigan James wanted to die. No, he needed to die. The correction in his thoughts came quickly, much to his surprise. Stood at the top of one of the tallest buildings in the city?s entertainment district, thoughts of plummeting to instant death came easily as he gazed at the people walking below him. They had no idea what he was planning as they walked to and from their homes and their jobs, just ordinary citizens living their ordinary lives. These people could never understand anyway, what with their fixation on their tiny problems, and so resolved to carrying out his final decision, Harrigan stepped off the edge of the concrete roof.

I'm an aspiring writer, but my characters tend to be unfortunately average. I like writing comedy, and I can't help but feel that all of my characters fall into the spiral of stupidity at the bottom of every comedy (if that makes any sense).

i'm currently working on my first book of hopefully 5 or 6 but my character would be NoriYuki Sato, my main character, i would go into great detail, but hopefully my friend will draw a picture, which will describe him much better..and if not then i'll describe how he looks later

this is the best i can do...sorry for the scattered feel of it

keep in mind that he is half dark angel, half pure ((aka light)) angel, he can be an ass at times, fairly blunt, a warrior, and a decendant of the Phoenix, as a matter of fact, he is the youngest member of the bloodline, and as a matter of fact, the last decendant of the powerful bloodline, for his older brother was born of a different father, the father of Yuki being the Phoenix blood carrier, his older brother was forced to kill their mother and kid-sister, the sister being roughly 4 years of age, Yuki had to witness it, because he could not will himself to kill them, his father was killed in a battle in their own home when Yuki was still only a few months old, most of the time he is like a lot of people, an optimistic pessimist, tries to find the good, while always knowing the bad, every year he visits the graves of his family on the day they were killed, which is always a bad day for him, as people could understand, Yuki is the key to ending wars between the Phoenix and the Dragon bloodlines, yet he is also the key to two prophecies, one good, one bad. Both sides are out to fulfill their prophecy, and just as the bad side is about to get him, his older brother takes the fall for him, and Yuki swears on his life that he will save him, and puts all of his time and energy into not only fighting his changed brother, but into finding a way to rescue him, even when he has fatal wounds, and fatal bloodloss..if he passes out, he wakes up and tries to find his brother, without giving time to heal.

as you can see, he is by no means perfect, but he always has the will to fight for what he believes, and for his loved ones. he always follows his heart, even if it would mean death, he would rescue a fallen comrade, without question, and without reguard to his own life. if there is a friend or comrade in trouble, he will rush over to take the arrow or blade into his own heart, and keep fighting as his comrade retreats, and he will finish the battle, and take as many arrows or blades as it would take to save as many of his comrades as he could

Hmmm... I am in the process of developing kind of an anti hero named Adanno. I'm experimenting how to show his slow descent to a depraved mindset and then to madness.

After the first hit he stopped. Something had happened. The intense feeling of euphoria had disappeared and a strong feeling of sorrow took its place. Tears began rolling down Adanno's face as he reeled away from the fractured glass. The tears soon turned into weeping and Adanno began to gasp for air. The experience was strangely satisfying. Still crying, Adanno got back on his knees and swung the rock again into the glass. The sorrow immediately stopped and now taking its place was the feeling of dread and Adanno reveled in it. The drastic emotional changes continued every time the rock struck the glass. He began to laugh uncontrollably now. Chuckling at first, but now it had become laughs of hysteria. To Adanno, the entire incident was wonderful.

It's always fun and interesting to see how a character develops.

I have been writing a book about the distant future and a war between three galactic civilisations that tore apart a previously well fortitfied united government. And my favourite has to be Zukan Gregorias of the Heron race (Reptilian race).

He is young, undiciplined buy extrodinarily skilled in the art of combat mostly due to training by his father (He carries his family's traditional inherited spear called Talonblaze with him through the duration of the book and in the beginning keeps it hidden in a knapsack and never uses it even when in danger because he doesn't feel 'ready' for it, but by the half way point he finally releases it and it is amazing) and indeed his rich heritage being a member of a noble family Gregorias, this in particular puts pressure on him. Unlike most Herons who are strict and noble honour bound warriors Zukan is a smart mouthed quipper who often mouths off to superiors. Zukan also has a problem with womanising though that is something deep down he regrets but can't seem to break out of it. He has a lot of quirks like yelling WEEEEEEE like a child every time his ship moves fast and he likes throwing small insects into electric walls, drinking coffee and generally acting like an idiot.
Underneath this however there is a noble, valiant and indeed honourable person. He demonstrates this every now and then like putting himself at risk in one of the opening chapters in order to protect people he doesn't even know, Zukan has very firm values and ethics when it comes to people's lives. Zukan has also shown to be rather emotionally distraught because he wept when he was forced to kill a human soldier to defend himself but that is something that lessens as he toughens up. Especially considering that as a skilled warrior he is expected to play a big part in the upcoming war.
Zukan also has distain to being called 'lizard' in a derragatory name because even though he is a reptile he knows when he's being insulted.
Zukan is the character who has the most adventures of the lot of them, often going out to do one simple task that then goes horribly wrong and he ends up fighting an unknown evil scourge on a derelict space craft on the other side of the solar system. It is he who uncoveres a conspiracy
Finally Zukan has an adopted sister named Sophie who is in fact a human (personality wise she is similar to Moira Brown). Zukan is very protective of her mostly because he swore to his father that he would but also just because he cares deeply about her. To the point where he despises one of the other lead male roles... a man called John Rican because he is getting 'too affectionate' with her.
Ultimatley he is by no means the best choice of hero but he's one of the few the galaxy has in these dark times.

This book is pretty big by this point, somewhere around 280 pages and I've let it sit for a while. I just figured I'd give ol' Zukan here a mention. Because he really is the character I've had a lot of fun writing.

Kato Boduko: an absurdly attractive red-headed gigolo whose martial arts prowess is of such magnitude that he can master any style in a matter of days. He is the best gigolo in the country, arguably the world, and he works in a modest building with tasteful interior design (his wealth is great enough that he works for no client against his will; he doesn't work for men of any kind or women he finds unattractive). His inhuman level of strength, speed, flexibility, coordination, and sex appeal is attributed to his mother having been the most powerful of all Succubi, the Queen of all Demons. He is consistently up-beat,oftentimes silly, and oddly humble, and he's an all-around good person.

As you can tell by his description, the story surrounding him must be completely silly. It is. It is an action/comedy comic that never takes itself too seriously, and the only reason I made him a gigolo is because I see great humor in the idea of a martial arts epic helmed by a male prostitute. I suppose it'd also be worth mentioning that his, erm, "line of work" is never actually depicted and only referenced for comedic effect. I guess the simplest way of describing it would be to say that it's kinda sorta like Yu Yu Hakusho, only much more silly.
