I know several Escapists are writers, writers-in-the-making, potential/aspiring/budding or even highly recognized writers. One thing that, for me, defines fiction are the characters. The best story can be ruined by having unoriginal, derivative or unlikable characters.
So here's the question: are there any of your characters that you are particularly proud of? If so, then please, show us. Tell us about them, their backstory, their motivations, their goals, their relationships, even how they look (hell, draw a picture if you like).
This, of course, can apply to artists, webcomickers (?), et cetera, who like to have a recurring character in their art.
My favourite character created by me is called Sohala Nikoufar. She's a day-time thief, night-time prostitute living in the Alamut fortress, in Persia (modern-day Iran). She's thirty-nine, and it's starting to show. She's crafty and resourceful, sometimes even witty (without falling into Mary-Sue range). She's very friendly to the Hashshashin (an zealous, fanatical Hashshashin sect), particularly the one she knows as Ismail (whom she has some rather deep feelings for - and it's the first time she has felt this way, and doesn't know what to do about it), although she despises their leader, Hassan. She's physically weak but very driven and resolute when the chips are down. Her mother is dead, and she's never met her parents. She's distrustful of people until they've proven themselves trustworthy, due to a lifetime of being backstabbed and betrayed by those she thought of as friends. She's just learning to read and write by Hassan himself, which she has mixed feelings for.
Here's her introductory paragraph:
Sohayla looked at herself in her little pocket mirror. The years were starting to show. Her deep black eyes were now surrounded by tiny wrinkles which curled and curved around them, as if trying to avoid touching them. Her lips, once pout and fleshy had begun to grow thin. The slightest movement of her eyes would cause lines to start appearing on her forehead. Her cheekbones were more prominent than ever, and she thought this disgusting, since it reminded her of her deceased mother, whose cheekbones, at the age of fifty, were practically identical to to Sohayla?s. She hated to think of it that way, although her mother had always been a very beautiful woman.
Well, enough textwalling. I'm more interested in YOUR characters, settings, cities, governments, anything you've created that you are very very proud of!
Go!
