WTB Good platformer

So while i was playing Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3 through for the 40-50th time I figured it was time to find a new platformer. Any suggestions for a game that matched its mind-numbing glory? Needs fast-paced gameplay, good characters and challenge modes with rewards like hidden stages.

I tried Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Dexter. I could not play them through both were slow for my platforming tastes.

Preferably on PC or PS3. Not a 2D sidescroller and with graphics that stood the test of time. Older games are fine, but polygon graphics of the N64 age I can only handle in a fix of nostalgia.

Rayman Legends and Guacamelee from off the top of my head are EXCELLENT! Rayman really started to get great 2 years ago with Rayman Origins.. and Legends broadens on that and is really a great game. Both are on Steam and I know Rayman has a demo.. not sure on Guac

Seconded both are excellent. I played Legends on WiiU but im sure its just as good elsewhere I also found Puppeteer really good on the PS3 it builds slow though but when it gets rolling it is epic its not as challenging as the other two though. Trouble is these are all 2D the only 3D platformers I can recommend of late are Mario Galaxy 1 and super Mario 3d world which are on the Wii and WiiU.

Actually Alice Madness returns is quite good im a bit biased as I really like the story of Alices in wonderland and through the looking glass but the platforming is solid if nothing else. Time is spent between platforming and combat its not exactly bleeding edge fast platforming but there is little downtime its probably the best 3d platformer on the PS3 however there isnt exactly a lot of stiff competition.

For PC if you havent played try Psychonauts, not really the best platformer out there but it does a decent job and it has great characters and dialog, they really keep you interested in seeing what comes next. It doesnt have much of the fast time trial stuff (with the exception of the Meat Circus as the end, that shit will test your skills) but the characters really make up for all of that to be honest.

Also take a look at Rayman 3, never really played it (only the demo) but it looked like a good traditional 3D platformer.

I'm subscribing to this thread because I also want to find a modern platformer, long long long time fan of both Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3 (even 1, but not so much), and Naughty Dog is sadly no longer its former glorious self.

Surprising that you didn't like R & C, I loved many of their games, even if their not quite the same calibur as the original CB series.

Braid might be a good one, from steam on PC (it is 2D side scroller, but its pretty good).

Little Big Planet 1 and 2, straight up platformers with some pretty neat world building tools which people have done great things with.

I second Alice: Madness Returns and Psychonauts.

Madness Returns focuses a bit more on combat than platforming, but it's got one of the more unique game worlds I've seen in the past few years. Doesn't have much in the way of unlockables, though, and I'm pretty sure the PC version was one of the first EA games to implement the requirement of an EA account even on Steam.

Psychonauts is something of a halfway point between the platforming focus of N64/PS1 platformers and the combat focus of Madness Returns, in that it has a more fleshed out combat system than something like Banjo-Kazooie, but the central design of the game is still platforming and puzzle-solving. It has very good, often funny writing and characters, as well.

If you could handle a transition to first-person, there's also Mirror's Edge. It doesn't really have good characters, but they're not insultingly bad either. The game is pretty short, but heavily encourages replaying through both time trials and challenge maps which have rather punishing three-star rating systems. You'd probably need the patience for trial-and-error gameplay, though, and some people just can't get the hang of first-person platforming.

Also, while it's admittedly more into speed for the 3D sections than straight out platforming, Sonic Generations is quite good in my opinion. Admittedly much of the game is in 2D even for the 3D-controlled character and the story again isn't much to speak of, but... hey, you never know until you try.

If you want to try something new, it's a game you cna get for under 10? and should excist on PC, since my friend played it on PC

It's a puzzle platformer, I was very surprised by it, saw it on the Nintendo Eshop for sale 6? and watched the trailer, thought I could kill some time with it and suddenly I had played 6 hours on it, and wasn't close to finishing

I agree with all claims of Psychonauts, Sonic Generations, and Rayman Legends (though Origins is also great). Simply superb platformers.

I know you tried Jak and Ratchet, but have you tried the Sly Cooper games? Some great 3D platforming there, with a hint of stealth (the stealth isn't that complicated). The original trilogy was on the PS2, and last year a 4th PS3 game was made by the same people who ported the trilogy to PS3. Fans of Sly also tend to like Jak and Ratchet, but meh, it's worth a shot. They're not that expensive these days, and poor little Sly needs more love.

While 2D Outland (XBLA / PSN) is a truly original platformer that every genre fan needs to play imo
