As you can probablly guess, this is a bit of a rant at companies adding extra rubbish that you don't want to things such as games. One example of this is Steam. I recently bought a copy of Dawn of War II and lo and behold, I have to install this POS before it will let me install the game, then I have to wait an hour to "update" it before I can play. I mean WTF? If we wanted this crap surely we would look it up ourselves instead of having the developers put it in for us when most people don't want it in the first place. Any views on this anyone?

I don't really see how Steam is rubbish, I mean, even if it's a pain to some people (I myself have never had a problem once I got off dial-up) doesn't its fantastic deals (like Left4Dead free for 24 hours) make up for it?
Excuse me, but $1 = 1 EUR is not a fantastic deal. I mean, they are still selling Fallout 3 or Mass Effect for 45 EUR, for Christ's sake! Even if 1 EUR = 1.25 PLN it would be actually MORE than at a retail shop.

And I'm sure it's always patched, because I've heard Steam doesn't patch some games.

Not really, seeing as I payed for a game that I expect to be able to install, then play straight away. You say "fantastic deals" Wouldukindly, but to me Left4Dead is not worth my time as zombie shooters, like zombie films, are too linear and boring. Things like this should be optional in my eyes, if you want it fine, but to be perfectly honest, I don't want it taking up space on my laptop, no matter how much or how little it may be.

That's called DRM. Welcome to the 21st century. It sucks, but it's not going away anytime soon. Fortunately, I happen to enjoy using Steam.

Maybe you can spend an hour complaining in their forums, demanding that you get your hour back.

I never have any problems with Steam. I hear a lot of complaining from people on the forums but me and my friends have no problem.

So are you saying youd rather have issues and glitches than an hour of updates?
You dont have to sit through them either. You could go and bake some cookies.

Not saqying I'd rather have the bugs and glitches, I'm saying that rather than force an extra waste of space on us, update it in game like previous games do.

I read this sentence three times and I still have no idea what you're trying to say. Update it in game? What?

This is one of the reasons I don't play PC. That and I don't have a gaming PC.
Yeah, having a gaming computer tends to help.

On topic though, add on are a *****, but occasionnally they are needed to run the game smoother and better, or play the game at all, so well, get over it.

Update in game, as in say Warhammer: Mark of Chaos for example, it gives you the chance to update and patch the game in game from the games main menu itself, or (not the same I know, but same idea) DLC for the likes of Oblivion or Fallout 3, where it patches it in game before you play it kind of thing

Steam is used as a form of DRM against pirating and used game sales, so if you every want to sell the games attached to your steam account, your basically stealing that persons money, unless you also give them your steam account and password.

Steam is, well, generally acceptable.

I'm willing to tolerate the constant updating due to the fact that the only games I get on Steam are online games (Protip: these are the only types of games you should ever buy on Steam) and updates to online games are generally useful. However, I don't like the fact that Steam itself is a bandwith-hogging, throughput-destroying mammoth that always seems to challenge my Bitorrent client to a duel wherein Firefox's bandwith is decimated.

It sounds like you're having an issue within your router. Nonetheless it definitely sounds like an issue that could be resolved, resulting in neither Steams or your bittorrent client taking the blame. Steam is definitely not a bandwidth hog, unless of course it's downloading your updates at the moment at the top rate that your bandwidth allows for.

If you are behind a router, just to try to eliminate it as a possibility, plug your computer straight into your modem for a bit and test it out. If it continues doing it then you know it's a software setting, and still probably very fixable.

I just don't want it. my laptop is up to spec to play Dawn of War II, the game I am now starting regretting buying because of Steam, but Steam is saying it isn't. I know my main gaming system is more than able to run it, but it has no net connection available to it so I can't install DOW II on it because Steam needs access to the net to install anything, such a great piece of crap. Not

It's pretty stupid how it makes you update before you can play singleplayer. I don't think patches even affect singleplayer.
