Something about trench warfare has gotten me excited. It doesn't make sense.
While there is already a game of this kind slated for release this summer("To End All Wars", by Kuju's Chemistry department), the fact that there's so little info about the game worries me.

Regardless, I'd like everyone's opinion about a WWI shooting game. I think that such a game would make an excellent tactical FPS with a dash of horror mixed in.

Since the only kind of single-man gun is the bolt-action rifle with a 5-second space between shots, you'd have to make sure you dispense with your biggest threat with each bullet. And the absolute terror of seeing a flamethrower crew headed your way makes it critical that you TAKE THEM OUT!

Of course, there's a bit of satisfaction when you actually hit the fuel tank for the flamethrower causing the two man crew engufled in a ball of fire, or hurling a grenade at a machine gunner and watch it explode, or hopping down into an enemy trench to devistate everyone in it...

Yeah, I think a WWI shooter would work. ;}

It could work, if handled properly. But that goes without saying.

I'll have to look up 'To End All Wars.' It sounds interesting.

I have actually been thinking about WWI video games for a while, and if you ask me (tho no one ever asks me) a sort of RTS arrangement would be coolest. You could manage slodier life in the trenches, organize mad, hopeless dashes accross no-man's land, defend your line with all sorts of death-dealers, etc.

I had more to say, but now thinking about it it seems rather silly.

hmmmm im doubtful since most WWI fighting was trench warfare which would likely cause loooong and dreary gameplay.
strategy based may work but still there was little strategy in that war just really hold in the trench and suicide charge the enemy's

I think it can work but it will have a couple of things going against it. One thing World War II has over it is a much greater range of weapons as so many were developed and employed. In World War I, the average grunt had a rifle, bayonet, and a couple of grenades and that was it. You might get a machine gun, but we're talking the huge heavy ones. It could work but it would have to work around this.

add some aliens and remove every trace of history ... could be good. Stick to history, get yourself gassed with your own illegal biological weapons and watch your friends die as you walk slowly across a barren land occasionally ducking in a crater and eventually being mown down and lying in a pool of your own blood praying for death for hours on end ... could be good. Its not gonna work, it'd be like making a game about being executed except you've got a rifle ... that doesn't work

WW1 could be cool...

I have always wanted to see a WW1 shooter, or a WW1 Platformer called "Trench Jumper".

WW1 didnt have the weapons of WW2, but it did have gas (Chlorine and Mustard). Gas Mask Quick time anyone?

Guys, It would be really boring. WW1 was just a bunch of hiding in trenches and waiting for the enemy to make some stupid mad dash towards you so that you can pick them off with you machine guns. There wasn't much urban warfare or FPS type warfare. WW1 was a trench war. It had sniping, artillery, and hiding.
On the western front, yes. That's the MAJOR opposition I see mentally for a WWI game: People only think about the Western front. There's also the Eastern Front, where nearly NO trenches were dug, The invasion of Galipoli, hopping on the first tanks, or hopping from from artillery crater to artillery crater as a German sturmtrupper.

That's right, you should be able to play as the Germans. [Dramatic Pause] In all honesty, that's part of what seperates WWI from WWII: There were no real "bad" or "good" guys, or any real point for fighting the war in the first place. And displaying the war from both sides would be an interesting change, no?

It'd probably be a lot like Condemned, but slightly more ranged.
Firearms are not anywhere near as useful as going up and gutting someone with a bayonet, a lot of the battle would be trench-to-trench (or crater-to-crater, or even wreck to wreck) melee affairs, dotted with heart-throbbing sniper action as you and your opponents attempt to shoot without getting shot.

.......I can see this working.

A lot of WW1 was trench war fair, and as the name implies both sides were entrenched, not particularly great game play (then again miles of linear mazes, sounds like DOOM). WW1 also featured horses, air plains, swords, bombs, zeppelins, tanks... so it could be really interesting.
Maybe Infinity Ward should get going on this... or not... hmmm...

Actually a lot of it wasn't trench war fair, but it would be ridiculous trying to make it through the whole game if it was actually that realistic, next to imposable and certainly frustrating.

Holy crap, YES! I hadn't thought oh that: Seeing a zepplin flying over! It would cast an onimous shadow across the battlefield as it heads toward some poor city. Also, if there are lulls in the combat when you're just sitting in the trench, you can bet with your buddies on who would win a dogfight going on overhead, as a little diversional minigame.

Well, I've thought about that some, and I think that if such a game were made, the single-player story would have to be sacrificed for the sake of playability. Break up a campaign into a bunch of seperate missions from different viewpoints. (I.E. French, German, British, Australian, Ottoman, etc.)

I think if some hippy artistic game developer wanted to make an anti-war statement with a game, a WWI game would work quite well. I actually have a few concepts for one. You have to survive on the front in a trench. You're just a grunt, you're ordered to do stupid things like charge an enemy machine gun and you do them. There would be occasional battles broken by long periods of sitting around doing nothing, getting shelled and running desperately to the bunkers, stumbling into pits of mustard gas, and other fun stuff like that. I never decided whether to make it winnable or not.

The problem would be that trench warfare is pretty bad material for videogames.

You sit in a wet trench for four hours. You run out. You get hosed down by gatling gun fire.

Not much fun, is it?
