Do you think games based on WWII will longer be released? Seeing as how Call of Duty has moved onto modern warfare (IW) and Treyarch is rumored move onto the Vietnam War. The other major WWII series Medal of Honor is rebooting with the Afghan war as the setting. Has WWII finally ended? Or is it just the end of big budget WWII games?

EDIT: This could probably be a poll....gahh too late now :\

well since the idea barrel for WW2 games has come down to just playing as a Nazi. The companies decided to go to other wars then rather face lawsuits

It seems that we're finally done with it - for some time, at least. Of course there still will be WW2 games, but not nearly as much of them.

No. As a matter of fact, game developers of all genres are still developing WWII games to this very day.

People will probably keep developing games based on WWII until it stops being the only war the Americans were unquestionably and popularly considered to be on the "good" side (and when sides were even recognisable, and there was a clear, uniform-defined line between civilians and the enemy). Which will probably be a long while.

People will keep making WW2 games. However, a break from WW2 games might be in sight.
If we're lucky. :S

There will always be WWII games, they might die out in popularity now and then, but they'll be back with a vengance afterwards! :O

That's why it's taken so long to get a game based on the Vietnam War (well, aside from the fact that many gamers in countries other than the United States wouldn't give much of a damn). It's easy to justify that the guys who tortured and murdered civilians were bad, but not so much when your enemies are civilians fighting for the unification of their country.

OT: No, WW2 games are going to keep coming for a very, very long time. As soon as all the major franchises vacate the space, more will spring up to fill the void.

In about 2 1/2 years, I will miss WW2. The problem now isnt that the War itself is overdone in my opinion, its thats the ideas are. In the previously stated amount of time, there will be enough innovations or some new trend to make it interesting. When the next gen consoles come out, people will want to see what they can do to WW2. Including me.

Well I still have never played one that has even mentioned the holocaust......
I think it will be a while before any company decides to be historically accurate but they will continue releasing World at War type games.

Man WW2 was such a world changing event, and came at such an interesting point in time in the history of human technological development (decent guns, but no nukes, so massive armies still the dominant force) that it will be used ad infinitum

I don't know, that's actually a really brilliant idea. I mean, the lawsuits are easy to deal with, but the thing is, it would have a really weird psychological effect on you, or maybe not weird, but it would certainly present an interesting conundrum to the player. The final level would be the battle of Berlin or whatnot. But, the Nazis lost, so in a sense, the player is faced with the choice of playing through a hopeless battle or just giving up due to the inevitable loss. And the goal of games is to be able to win them. So the deveolpers have an interesting problem: How do they make the player feel like they've won, and still make the nazis lose?

Something for you to chew on.

Nope, at least not for a while. It's time to scrape the "Modern Warfare" Barrel till even the barrel's gone.

World War 2 is an event that everyone recognises and knows a little bit about, so it's an easy/lazy way of developers creating a plot. Plus it was such a world changing event that it needs to be re-told somehow. Not everyone watches documentaries/reads history books/goes to history class. It is a medium for teaching history...even if a lot of American game developers (I'm looking at you EA) tells a slightly wonky version of history.

But you never know, maybe someday on this very website, someone will be bitching about
"Call of Duty 10 Falkland Islands" or "Medal of Honour Suez Crisis"

I like WWII. I'm a little sad that we're seeing the end of an era. For now at least. Watch, in a couple years everyone will be complaining about all the games set in the modern day. It's just a vicious circle.
