I don't know the rules on linking to another site, but if you google, you will find the reveal trailer.

It turns out that "Advent" teaser from a week or so ago was this.
20 years on and humanity has accepted it's new, weird alien overlords.
It's a nice, clean looking society that has integrated alien technology and statues here and there of aliens reaching down open handed to lift humanity from it's prone, helpless state.
Unfortunately with surveillance scanners on every lamp post, armed peacekeepers on every corner and alien supervisors lurking in the shadows.
Dystopia with a chrome finish and a plastered on smile.

All is not lost though.
Xcom returns and they are fighting back as a resistance movement with outdated technology and a helicarrier like mobile command platform.
More turn based tactical combat, teaser indicates additional melee combat options and a return of an old, scaley favorite from the original.

so...
What do you think fellow forum goers?

*edit*
There is a rumour that it will be a PC exclusive.
I'm not sure how much credit to give that, but it is possible given the permutations that the term has these days.

Here is the trailer for the benefit of others.

My thoughts: that snake thing looked stupid. I really hope it's not an alien - it could be some weird genetic experiment from the aliens.

Also, I am pretty sure I kicked the aliens' butts quite hard in the previous game, I'm not sure how I feel for them just taking over.

Other than that, I'd love to play more XCOM. In fact, the rebel movement in the cyberpunk future looks really cool, indeed. I'm going to wait eagerly until it comes out. This might even be a game I end up pre-ordering it, who knows.

Get hype, bitches!

Gosh, I finally have a game to be excited for this year, and I like how the trailer made some attempts to look like Enemy Unknown (the woman running to cover for example).

Please be good, please be good, pleeeeaaaaase be good. I really liked EU so if 2k and firaxis don't screw this up it might be really good.

Anyway, I don't care in the slightest about the story which didn't interest me in EU, nor in EW, so this trailer is little more than an announcement to me. I'd much rather see the gameplay. All I can tell from this is that the focus seems to have shifted a bit more to melee combat.

AWESOME!!

Until I found out it was PC exclusive. Isn't that just a big "Fuck You" to anyone who bought the game on Xbox 360 or PS3? Hopefully they will port the PC version to the current gen consoles after the games release.

Makes sense. X-com got into some scary shit that culminated with planet-wide destruction and a massive ship collapsing into a black-hole along the coast of South America.

New, majorly advanced tech showing up in militaries that bought them from some unknown, highly secret organization started getting deployed. Major cities burning. The heroes of the story being as "Top=secret" as it can get.

Yeah, a "new" group of aliens showing up to lend us a helping hand after those other, "bad" aliens were barely beaten off could gain influence stupidly quickly. Helping us put our cities back together, upgrading security to catch any leftover sympathisers or thin-men is only natural for security purposes. That Snake-man? Oh, reptiles were the dominant species on his home planets. They're really great guys.

Guys, it's XCOM. :<

Looking forward to it already, not sure about the snake thing though, doesn't look alien. I hope it's some sort of experiment done by the evil humans.

I got a nostalgiarection when I saw that Snakeman.

[/spoiler]

I wonder where the hell they were during the original invasion. I'm sure the story behind them is different now.

Also, melee units!? Fuck yes!

I'm digging the Apocalypse-esque direction in the game too. The whole idea of humanity "unified" after the War, only to succumb to another more clandestine alien threat is a great way to mix up the formula. Towards the end of XCOM, the staff were conversing over the long term effects of the war, and the human adaptation of alien technologies. It was a pretty interesting conversation. And now they seem to be building an entire game off that idea.

Color me extremely interested and excited. I can't wait to hear more.

Need to see a features list to know whether this is a true sequel or a glorified expansion pack.

Scratch that, I guess some details are out. Procedurally generated maps has piqued my interest. And mod support too. Oh my! What a fantastic year for gaming this is turning into.

Also...PC Exclusive. I can hear the sound of Tippy crying from here. =(

You could hear that? I know my wailing was loud but I guess it was way louder than I expected...

This just might do it. I looked into PC gaming earlier this year but changed my mind once I realized my precious sport games are not on the PC. I have time to see what happens here but if it stays PC-Exclusive, a new member of the PC Master Race may be born...

Yes, I loved XCOM so much that I might buy an entire system just to play it :D

Woah, I now have 2 games to look forward to this year, instead of just MGS5.

Looks pretty damn awesome and an intriguing concept and story. I loved the first one, Within even more, so definitely got my eye on this.

The only 2 things I hope is that it is as optimised as the first one so I can play it on my gaming laptop (if it's PC only it should be to maximize it's audience. Not everyone has ultra high spec PC's, so scalability should be taken into account), and that MEC's make a return because they were awesome.

So from the looks of things, a few possible new gameplay features:

The sword looks like a new melee focused class

We may have to carry wounded soldiers off the battlefield

The mobile base will likely be a big part and change up the base and strategy map gameplay

Given Xcom is now the underdogs, I get the feeling recruitment will be very different. Possibly abducting the apparently human soldiers and indoctrinating them, like Peace Walker and Phantom Pain?

Gonna be honest I was kinda hoping they'd do an updated version of Terror From the Deep. Being able to fight what are essentially Lovecraftian horrors would have been amazing with the new engine. Although I can't even begin to imagine how they would handle underwater combat. Still this looks pretty cool. It kind of reminds me of the third X-Com game that took place in the giant mega city.

I was kind of hoping for a large expansion for Unknown, possibly doing the whole Terror from the Deep thing as a post endgame campaign. Still, I like the look of what they are going for here.

Considering I really liked the previous XCOM, especially with the Enemies Within expansion, consider me excited.

True Enemies Unknown wasn't nearly as in-depth or complicated as the original could be, but it still did a good job of preserving the series core attributes without over-simplifying things to the point of becoming boring. Similarly it had a nice polished feeling to it and I liked the games presentation.

Gimme more of that and I'll be happy. Also interesting that it's PC only this time. Guess the console versions just didn't sell as well as the publisher had hoped, or perhaps they're hoping to port it to consoles at a later date, either way it's not very often you see a previously multiplatform series go PC exclusive. Sign of the times perhaps?

I loved Xcom. Finished it three times, then twice more with the expansion. Very excited about this sequel. Also excited about the fact this isn't an announcement of a game coming out 2 years from now. Its only 6 months away! That's the way it should be done. (I'm assuming the devs have been working on it most of the time since the expansion).

The story from the trailer initially seems a bit wierd. I get the whole "aliens arrive and publicly claim to be Humanity's savior, give them free tech, cure all diseases, but secretly they are the bad guys" thing. Seen it in other places, for example the TV series V. But ... you can't do the secret bad guy thing when they had an open war in the first game. Is it the same race of aliens? Even if not, would Humans really be that trusting of a new alien race? If the Humans surrendered, why didn't the aliens just wipe us out?

They've got alot to explain from a story point of view.

They didn't wipe us out because that was never their goal, the closest they got were the terror missions which were meant to destabalize governments not actually drive humans to extinction. The final mission in the game has the ethereals explaining that they want humans to discover psionics because they want to create a warrior race that is both physically and psychically powerful.

The reason humans surrender is likely partially due to mind control, or EXALT from the expansion, if you lose the game in the original Xcom they show the sectoid commander mind controlling the council speaker before they shut XCom down. In the sequel it is very likely that the one world government shown in the trailer, ADVENT, is either made up of the alien supporting EXALT faction, or consists of copious amounts of mind control and threatening attacks against anyone that resists. They want humans to be docile and compliant, likely to create things like that human/sectoid hybrid from the trailer.

Maybe all we achieved in Xcom 1 by blowing up the temple ship and killing those ethereals was to make the aliens take humanity more seriously as a threat and mobilise the true unseen power of their war machine. The problem with fighting Aliens is you have no intel on the true capabilities of your opponent. There could have been be trillions of alien soldiers ready to be mobilised against us, just waiting in another solar system.

Would blowing up the White House and killing the President allow me to claim I defeated America or just paint the biggest target on my back you've ever seen?

Well in my playthrough earth was defeated after the XCOM Commander went missing after 2 squads of elite soldiers died and Exalt managed to make 3 countries leave less than one day before each were about to get satellites.... so either way humanity is fucked.

Correct. Because X-COM refers to the original series, not the reboot. :)

I can see why people mix them up though.

Anyway I'm with a few posters above: I'd always kinda hoped for TFTD but regardless I'm pretty hyped about this. :D
