After all these stories about IPs being ruined in front of their creators, corporations resorting to dirty legal tricks, the animosity growing between gamers and publishers, paying more money for less content, the budget gap that makes competing with big companies nearly impossible...

Gaming is more and more becoming a glaringly ugly and unpleasant thing to make a hobby and/or career of. It wasn't always like this. (but the nastiness among gamers was always there, but hey, you're dealing with mostly kids)

Anyway, it's the same thing that happend to Fallout 3

Glad they are making it first person . And not just remaking some old game.
Yes I can see how going with a genre that is utterly dominating the market and becoming difficult to parse (as none of the games seem to pop out anymore if they aren't mass marketed with hundreds of millions of dollars) is a great idea.

Basically you are happy they didn't remake an old game, because instead they are just remaking the same game most folks seem to be churning out but sticking the name of a highly popular old game onto it. :/

Not that my or your opinion matter in what will happen.

Well said. But lets not forget that most fans are still trying to forget this horrid excuse for a game.
I mean this with 100% sincerity "I actual had till this news post popped up."

My problem is that I can't decide what to think about this game.

It looks very good, on it's own. I like the fifties style, and the gameplay sounds promising.

But it is no way X-Com. I *love* the original X-Com/UFO games - I picked them up again on STEAM the other day (I have the original game on floppy disks, but no longer own a PC with a 3.5 inch drive) and was surprised by how well they (well, the first two) have stood up to the ravages of time.

Oh well. At least it has to be better than X-Com: Enforcer.

Well I never played the original series (I was young and had no idea about it) but I have read up on this new X-COM and I think it looks and will be amazing, also it's not the only FPS X-COM, there was one that came before
Not really.

It was X-Com Alliance and it was never finished. It was shelved when Hasbro shut down it's gaming company (hasbro interactive?).
X-Com: Enforcer was a FPS.

It was very, very, very bad.

Amen. This sucks balls. It may be a good game in its own right, but I feel insulted by the developers trying to market it to me under the name 'X-COM'. This game is not X-COM. It has nothing to do with X-COM, they've just stolen the name of a revered franchise and slapped it on their latest generic FPS to try and sucker people into taking an interest by pure name association. At this point, I honestly couldn't give a shit whether it's good or not. I wanted a new X-Com game, but no such thing exists.

Once again its the people at mind again.....this exists because a formula has proven profitable. If it doesn't appeal to the one batch of people, it will appeal to another...especially if the other outnumbers the first in regards to profit sales. Every sale that this game makes beyond the needed margins, meaning it does not bomb, will only add to the aims of the producer and in destroying yours, the people that resent this move and is hostile to it.

And yes I was fortunate enough to see what X-COM was all about and I liked it. While I admit the black slime is a little creepy.....I'd cringe in terror if I saw a chrysalis...however its spelt....up close and personal.....

.....*shudder* imagine that in a FPS actually....Yeah they were bad enough from a viewing distance.

I strongly suspect that when the 3d "re imagining" of x-com is released the situation will be if they called it anything else and didn't make anything of the inspiration being x-com, then it would have been an ok game.
As they didn't it will be all but impossible not to compare it to x-com, which with its legendary status, massive replayability and large scope will never be anything but harsh.

Add me to the list of those who don't get why they're using the X-Com name at all. Sure, it still has some cache with a group of fans who were probably clamoring for a new game in the series.. but those same fans are the ones who are going to hate them for making it an FPS. The fans who don't care that it's an FPS are, as evidenced by this thread, not the ones who even care that it has the name X-Com and would buy it regardless. This really seems like a case where using an established name actually gains them absolutely nothing except a lot of hate.

Honestly, it reminds me of the Xbox 360 Shadowrun debacle.

Complaining that they would make it an FPS is one thing. Complaining that it's not turn based, however, is rather baffling to me. Turns are a dated gaming mechanic that evolved out of board and pen and paper games, where there's no processor to handle a real-time clock. They arbitrarily limit the pace of a game, which is fine for long strategy games like Civilisation or JRPGs, where you need a decent attention span anyway. Yeah I know, it's easy to shake your cane and say that kids these days don't have any attention span, but don't forget that you were once a kid and your parents were probably grumbling at you for wanting to play with your Gameboy rather than having a good old fashioned game of monopoly. Just because the original X-COM managed to be highly atmospheric and intense even with a turn based system doesn't mean it should continue to be limited by such a system. They don't have to make it an FPS, I agree; they could make it a real time 3rd person tactical game.

I don't think it's a mistake to make the game they're currently making, but I DO think it's a mistake to call it X-COM. They are pissing off the original fans while the actual target audience probably hasn't even played an X-COM game, making the connection meaningless. The connection is incredibly weak anyway so why even make it?

As for a turn-based being viable or not... Wasn't Valkyria Chronicles at least a decent success? A X-COM in a similar style (obviously not an anime X-COM but...) could be successful.

FPS that isn't just shooting? Might just get this. Though I don't really care if this game is turn-based or FPS because I haven't played the older games. Maybe I should. Which way ever it is this game sounds interesting.

-Nearly lost faith in FPS'es.

Fair 'nough. In that case I can see why people would be angry. No need for caps though.

I never considered the hand held angle. A Hand held X-Com could be badass. Especially on the new Magical Nintendo 3ds
