Man how did I miss this announcement. Time to fire up the sequelized plot device!
*X-Com Historical Record: Diamond Family entry, years 1999-2040*
The years after Cydonia were not kind to Maximilian "Ace" Diamond. The United States had backed the wrong side in the war for Humanity, something that left him both angry and vengeful. The secession of Alaska didn't help matters either. Two months into the factional conflict that gripped the former United States, Ace simply disappeared from X-Com's main base in Germany, taking with him the remaining UAVs and one suit of power armor. For the next few years as North America spiraled into a violent maelstrom of chaos, scattered reports came in from all over the continent of a mysterious force of hovering tanks led by an armored humanoid, burning their way indiscriminately through whatever military forces they could find, seemingly with the intent to render every faction unable to fight and force peace talks.
Sadly practice and theory are two different things, and within a year each faction fighting for control of North America had its own team dedicated to hunting down this phantom tank brigade. Things came to a head in the Nevada desert, where, cornered and running out of options, Ace had no choice but to detonate the reactors of all his tanks and his power armor on the crater where Area 51 once had been. No human remains were found at the site, and in time the mysterious force that had menaced all factions became a memory.
Ace had escaped, however, using the explosion as a diversion. Tired of fighting on his own to find enemies he couldn't even locate (the people behind the truce with the Aliens during the war) he settled down into a quiet life, or as quiet as possible, running UAVs from behind the lines after enlisting with a group of soldiers that included some of his former comrades from the US Air Force. As the years went by and fighting became replaced by reconstruction, he returned to the Northeast United States where he hailed from and tried to eke out a more peaceful existence. Despite this relative complacency however he could never shake the feeling that those enemies he fought long ago are not truly done for.
The year is now 2040. The news is filled with reports of mysterious sightings and numerous unexplained ship sinkings where no survivors are found. Ace knows something isn't right. However he also knows he's far too old to contribute to this war. Given the injuries he suffered over the last 40 years he's lucky he can still walk much less fight. However there is another option. His son Jack, in reality adopted after his parents (who were known to Ace) died in the waning days of conflict, is now in his 20s. Jack has known about the true story of America's donwfall ever since he could remember. While highly dubious to some, Jack has the benefit of learning first-hand and seeing proof of his foster father's stories. While fully qualified to serve among the best in the US Navy, Jack knows they will not be able to do what X-Com could do, and he sets out for Gibraltar, eager to follow in his father's footsteps...in a fashion anyway.
