My apologies for the omission. Some information can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yardie. You are correct in assuming the gang connection.ChaoticKraus said:Now, as a non-englishman i have no idea who the Yardies are. Could you explain?Speakercone said:In London, Patois is seen as a language of criminality and violence. Decades of dealing with the Yardies will do that.ChaoticKraus said:Patois is the language of cool.
I guess its gang-related, so i kind of understand what your point is. The language of a poor minority that is often involved in criminality/drugs/whatever will of course have a threatening connection.
It's the same with east european/middle eastern languages here.
My best friend is jamaican and we tend to drive around listening to ragga together, i really dig the rhytm of the language. Thats and all the overall jamaican myth has kind of led me to connect patois with good times.
The other thing to remember is that a type of faux-Patois is typically spoken by a certain type of kid here. The kind of kid who was involved in the recent riots in London. This reinforces the link to criminality for us.
I'm sure that people in Jamaica who speak it are fine and wonderful people, but it doesn't really change the perception over here.
