I'm actually in favor of developers getting a cut of used game sales, but this is the wrong way to go about it, and Microsoft itself has no right to any of that money whatsoever. It's their platform, awesome, but I don't see ASUS taking a cut of every game I buy on Steam just because I use a laptop they built. Not to mention the way this will distort prices. Just reading a recent Escapist article on the same, apparently retailers will be required to sell at 10% under the original RRP, rather than the up to 50% people are used to.
Developers get paid by salary, most don't see a dime after they've been paid. It's a job just like any other, these guys are not artists or musicians.

Well, it's not so much the "fuck used gamers" thing, it's the "Fuck every gamer with Always On DRM" thing.

Nope. Microsoft royally fucked this one up guys. There are no two ways about it.

Excited for E3? Why'd I want to get excited for more PR folks doing PR talk? I don't get excited for the commercial blocks on TV, even when rumor has it that there's going to be an infomercial revealing something entirely new and awesome >.>

Hype is exactly what I don't want to deal with in gaming these days.
But you get to watch those same PR people awkwardly pretend to play games.
Do you remember the Far Cry 3 co-op demo?

OT:
It seems like they should have had all this figured out by now.
I'm not going to hate on it, but it really seems like they're having a hard time realizing that some people don't have internet or don't want to connect their One.

Haha, I love how desperate the defenders get.

It went from "this is just rumors" screeching to "it's not THAT bad" to "okay, it's terrible, but it could be worse!"

OP, this really isn't helping Microsoft or the Xbone. So far, every single worry has been proven true. It's considered a major PR disaster.

these guys are not artists or musicians.
Actually, by any definition of "art", they very much are artists. The content mafia is just hell bent on cheating them out of their share.

Does anyone else think Valve is just sitting back watching the major players cut their own throats and destroy the vice like grip on market with their own greed and distain for the consumer and then "BOOM HEADSHOT" put them both out of their misery with a next gen console people actually want.

The way the Xbone handles Used Games is needlessly complicated at best.
Why bother going through the trouble of authenticating discs and then de-authenticating discs if the end result is essentially the same as before? It cannot be to manage installs, because installs are supposed to be tied to the user's account, which M$ claimed can be accessed from any Xbone.

I get the feeling that there's something Microsoft isn't telling us.

Also: No, I'm not getting excited for E3. Why should I? That show has sucked a fat hot one for years.

Not sure what you, or Microsoft for that matter, were expecting.
I'm expecting EXACTLY this. I was simply addressing Gorath's statement that people weren't creating their own narrative.

Honestly, I don't know why I have to have some sort of investment in this to correct a statement. You don't need to be a meteorologist to say it's raining.
I didn't say they weren't creating their own narrative, I said they weren't creating their own truth. I've not seen anyone claiming they know anything to be factual, but are, as you said, picking the rumors that they find the most believable (even if that belief is informed by bias) and making statements about how they feel about those rumors. I have not, by and large, seen anyone claim any of these rumors to be true with any real certainty. I think the word narrative is a much better descriptor of what people are actually doing. The reason I wanted to split hairs about this in the first place was because I feel that accusing people of acting as if the rumors are true casts their complaints about possible outcomes in a negative light. Should the rumors be true or not, complaining about a possible scenario is justified until we do have clarity.

So make a long story short we, as customers, have to jump through hoops to make a simple video game exchange work. And some of you are okay with that? Are you guys gullible or something?

So, basically, they are cutting out small stores/chains, cutting into GameStop's already meager profits, and destroying lending and borrowing games for the console. Oh, and they are still treating all customers as pirates through essentially always-online tactics. And they are just now mulling over codes to play the game offline, showing how even more out of touch they are with reality. And this is all dependent on if our probably faulty info is correct. How is this better? Yeah, I am excited for E3. Excited to see how Microsoft will embarrass themselves further. -_-

With the 360, you had to put in a 16 digit code and wait about 10 minutes for them to release the hostages.
I lol'd. Good show sir. Also created this annoying crap scenario:
If you saved a game of Mass Effect on one 360, that involved DLC, replaced the 360 inevitably, and the the EA server was down or your internet was out, you couldn't load that save, cuz they couldn't verify you owned the content belonged to your box.

I couldn't play a saved game of ME1 that wasn't even currently in the asteroid DLC content cuz of that.
i lent my friend my old 360 just to play Mass Effect 1.

He got stuck at a certain part right near the end of the game, after playing about 24 hours total, and asked me to help him.

So I had him just bring the hard drive over with the save and his gamertag (not even a live gamertag, just a 360 profile)

I put the hard drive in, and the save won't load because of unverified DLC.

He didn't even know he'd been playing with DLC, he had no idea. I deleted the DLC, didn't work, tried redownloading it, didn't work.. said sorry to him and sent him home with the hard drive with the save, and freshly downloaded DLC on it.

He took it home, and the save wouldn't load on the other 360.

He was COMPLETELY locked out of the save that he'd JUST been playing a day earlier, short of buying the DLC himself. He didn't even have internet for the 360, nor a gamertag, nor at all the want to spend 10 dollars on basically nothing.. spending 10 dollars to finish the game (and he was RIGHT near the end).

the CURRENT 360's DRM is bullshit if you end up in one of those cracks - that's 24 hours completely wasted out of my friend's life. an entire day.

Luckily, I'm a complete Mass Effect dork, and I have WAY too much time, so I actually went and played the game up to the point that he was stuck at (took me about 10 hours) and had him play through the end of it.. If I hadn't done that, he wouldn't have been able to finish the game that he was actually enjoying but quite pissed off at.

But that's for the Current Xbox DRM.

The new one seems like a wholely different beast with this utter annoyance built right into the system with the only solace being it's laid out in fairly plain english how they intend to fuck you over.

Meh. Don't care about the used games thing, one way or the other. Haven't set foot in a gamestop for many years. The always on thing gets me though. Two words: Hotels and unreliable internet (that you might have to pay for). The whole point of a console for me is the portability of it. You can pack it up and play it on the road with just a tv hookup. What if you live where you don't have great internet and could give two f's about sports, sports, tv, sports, tv, trending, kinect, sports!

I have no hate for people who still want to game on consoles but it seems the next generation of them are not for people like me. One less thing for me to spend money on, I guess.
In terms of Hotels, also remember you'd have to haul around a Kinect 2, which is bulkier.

...It doesn't say anything about periodic checks (such as with the Xbone) and it could be very possible that they will implement those...
Nope, Sony have confirmed - as I said in my post - multiple times that the Playstation will not have an internet requirement of any kind. In the latest edition of Game Informer, dubbed the PS4 Edition, they speak with the Head of Sony's Playstation studios, and he confirms - without uncertainty - that the Playstation will not have an internet requirement of any kind. No periodic checks. No constant connection.
You do not need the internet to use a Playstation 4 at all, in any capacity.

I will, can't wait to see Smash Bros. and Mario Kart!

But in all seriousness, even 100amazing Ips couldn't save the Xbox One now. People don't want to deal with the BS attached to playing those games, if they did Sony's stock wouldn't have shot up and wiiUs wouldn't have started selling.

We still don't know how the used game thing is going to pan out. It's hard to believe Gamestop is just going to surrender all those profits to Microsoft without effecting the consumer negatively. And even if it turns out ok, we still have to deal with always-online, always monitored by a Kinect NO ONE wants, no BC, walking over indi devs and a console that is still focused more on other things them bringing a fulfilling game experience.

Knowing microsoft, the thing will die in 2 years and you have to rebuy the console anyways. May as well double the price and be honest for once. 400-500? more like 800-1000. And to people who will tell me that Xbone will be different. Why should I trust microsoft ever again after they already abused it? Fuck them.

Bad, incomplete, inaccurate news.

As a principal it stinks, there was always an idea that while trading games between friends was an unalienable right of the consumer, game stores were abusing the trust with unfair practises. So MS appear to launch a system that prevents trading and lending games amongst friends but keeps the stores doing what they are doing. Also it still effectively needs a constant (every 24 hours is effectively constant) connection.

Screw that noise.
Yeah this is pretty much how I saw it shaping up and they've pretty much confirmed it:

Microsoft's official stance on the Xbox One used-game scenario is that the platform has been designed "to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail."
Microsoft has essentially set themselves up as the gate keeper through which one can resell their games, and at the moment it seems like the only places that will be acceptable are large retailers. Can you give your game away? Trade it to a friend? Sell it on Ebay or Craigslist? This all remains unanswered and maybe they'll surprise so far the likely answer would seem to be no.

It's not wonder that Gamestop would be okay with the XBone, Microsoft is basically handing them a and other big retailers a monopoly on all game trade ins.

The PS4 is also going to attack used games too, by the way. They famously dodged the 'can we run used games' question around the time of their reveal in a penny arcade report interview. You don't dodge a question like that if you've nothing to hide.
They may have planned to do the same thing. Seeing how badly Microsoft just got hit (and their stocks went up) over the issue, they may wise up.

...oh who am I kidding. Of course they're going to do the same shit.

Just remember that this is a worldwide release, so that means they'll have to make deals with every single retail business in the world! That includes big chain retailers, independent game stores, second hand electronics stores, good-wills, the list goes on, it's just not possible to do!

But for the sake of argument, let's say they pull that off: It will mean that retailers are going to have higher prices to still make a profit, while also paying less for an offered game.

So a lot of people will sell their games on ebay, Craigslist, or even flea markets because they'll get more money for their games. What is Microsoft gonna do about that? Ban reselling XO games if you're not a retailer?
