Xbox 360 Sells Gangbusters in 2012

Microsoft has led the console market for the last year and a half.

As gamers prepare for the next (and possibly last) iteration of dedicated game consoles, the Xbox 360/PS3/Wii console wars are largely a thing of the past - save, perhaps, for Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo themselves. While avid men and women of the console persuasion hoard their dough (and bemused PC gamers look on from the heavens above), the Big Three are still eager to push as many devices out the door as they can before obsolescence sets in. Microsoft, at least, need not worry: The Xbox 360 has dominated hardware sales for the last 18 months, capturing over 40% of the market for 16 of them.

According to the NPD Group, the Xbox 360 accounted for 47% of console sales in the U.S. during June 2012. Combined with software and accessory sales, this made Microsoft a cool $272 million for that month alone. In addition to beating the other two consoles individually, these numbers represent more than June's combined PS3/Wii sales. While Microsoft claims that part of this success is due to the Xbox 360 playing host to three out of last month's bestselling four games (Diablo 3 being the obvious outlier), the other three top games (Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and Max Payne 3) were available for the PS3 and PC as well.

Microsoft is obviously doing something right to achieve such consistent and lucrative success, but since their top-selling games are multiplatform releases, it stands to reason that the PS3 could theoretically be doing just as well with the right kind of marketing push. As for the Wii, Nintendo is probably busy preparing for the WiiU. Furthermore, since the Wii has sold almost 100 million units so far, it can probably rest easy for now.

I still have a working Original PS1. My brother has gone through 2 Xbox 360s. I guess their key focus is to make a console break down so you have to buy more.

Yeah, it's called making shitty consoles that break and piss poor warranties.

If you're a halo-tard and buy three Xbox360s, then OF COURSE 360 sales are gonna dominate.
That might have been true in 2006 with the first 2 generations of motherboards for the Xbox, but now their build is pretty solid.

And when your Xbox breaks you don't buy a new one, even if the warranty is out if you ship your Xbox to Microsoft they send you a new one for (with shipping and tax) about $100.

Didn't Sony enjoy the exact same successful hardware sales around about when Infamous 2, Gran Turismo 5, GOW3, MAG, Heavy Rain and Killzone 3 were all released within 12 months?

Seems pretty standard.

In the end I'd suggest that Sony sacrificed this round by bundling the Blu Ray into the PS3, forcing it to be more expensive and therefore losing a lot of early ground to the 360.

However, their main objective was to make Blu Ray beat HD-DVD, and they've won that. Consoles are small potatoes after that, I think, for Sony.

Either way, Sony and MS are both doing just fine thanks very much, and no amount of fanboyism is going to change that :)

I think the next gen will be the interesting one... do they do away with optical drives entirely and move to a Steam-style online store, ensuring only people with decent internet buy their machine, but making it harder to pirate?

(my main thought about that, if that online only console isn't coming with at least 1TB of storage, then screw you, I'm not buying bigger hard drive at extortionate prices, just so I can buy things from you, it's like the supermarket charging you $10 for a paper bag to carry your stuff in. If they did, you'd just buy less stuff, or find a way to bring your own bags in even tho it was against their rules :D )

Also, who releases first this time?

Will the machine be any better than a $500 PC? Only time can tell :)

If Ouya actually delivers both of them will be up shit creek. I really don't think either of the companies would(or should) consider an online-only formula, Internet(caps and bandwidth), is still not up to scratch in way too many places in the world.

Not to mention the whole "always online" thing.

It's pretty clear to me where this recent success has come from. Marketing. Xbox has FAR better marketing than Nintendo and PS3 combined, you always see their commercials, they pay to have their logo at the end of multiplat commercials, they even made one of the worst peripherals in the history of gaming sell like fucking hotcakes. It even seems like Xbox has become the dominant game console name in media nowadays when shows refer to video games.

I mean you'd think they would have a hard time selling a console with very little exclusives, subscription based online, and the worst of the 3 motion control schemes. But no, their marketing pulled it off.

To clarify I'm definitely not a Microsoft fanboy, but it seems glaringly obvious to me how this success came about.

I must say I was not amused in the slightest by your comment about PC gamers watching from the heavens and you aren't helping the argument against my accusation of the PC gaming community being full of assholes. Forgive me if you were being sarcastic though.

Hardware wise it is about the same as current consoles, certainly better than the Wii and with more RAM than any of them. It is only held back by the OS not being all that it could. As for the free to play, games have to have a free demo and then they can charge for the full game, think a return to the shareware tactics of Doom, Duke3D and Commander Keen.

Could the Kinect be driving these sales? It certainly seems to be a more unique implementation of motion control than the Move or Wii.

Seems like they want some pretty big AAA games.

huh...really? well thats interesting

though it seems to be download only which isnt an option for me...plus I'd rather just wait for the next gen before I get anything new

Off topic, but I feel like I've read this same exact thing a few years ago. Such a strange case of deja vu.

OT: I've had my 360 for a few good years but I feel like I'm getting sucked in to the PC by way of Minecraft. And although I'm intrigued by the WiiU, I still feel like a good PC would be a far better investment. The 360 version of Minecraft feels so... empty compared to the PC version.
All in all, the 360 has set the stage for consoles and next generation we'll see the ultimate war: 720 v. PS4 v. WiiU v. PC. This generation has lasted long enough for the "Big Three" to know what they have to do for the next. Hopefully the Ouya will get more attention and market share than the Zeebo.
That's right, Zeebo is a thing.

I was in Wal Mart tonight and noticed that they moved the 360 games (and consoles) to the front of the aisle. That's where the Wii stuff has been until now. So as you enter the aisle it's 360, Wii and finally PS3. Funny thing, between the Wii and the PS3 games there are PSP and PS2 games now. I am not even kidding. Vita games are with the PS3 games.

I don't have a 360 but it seems to me like MS is still trying to improve the firmware/features/what it can do.
My ps3 hasn't improved much over the years.

Hey now...keep your "facts" away from all the delicious and obviously well-researched hyperbole XD

What's this I hear? Consoles? By Jove. I had no idea they still made those child's toys.

Now if you'll excuse me, my PC and I are off to play video games of the highest quality. Let us leave the peasants to toil in the mud with their little trinkets. Phnar, phnar, snort.
