Xbox Live Question: Changing Offline Profile to Online?

I asked this question on the Xbox Live Support forum and got no answer. I've been playing my 360 offline since 2006 and have of course grown very attached to my profile. I finally decided to sign up to a free Xbox Live account just to purchase expansions to games I own. I was told you can change an offline account into an online one, but I can't find anything to let me do so.

Is there a way to change an offline Xbox profile into an online one?

I am not sure if I fully understand the question...

You should go to your account, and either on the dashboard or on the mini-dashboard you bring up by pressing the big X in the middle, it will say connect to xbox live or sign up. It should say something like, If you select that, you should be able to sign up with your name, your new gamertag and everything. You just have to sign up to xbox live by making a new gamertag (gamertag, not a ENTIRE new account,) and maybe putting a credit-card only if you want to pay for xbox live or DLC, which is your case.
