The question should be why are you paying if you don't like it, not why are they charging. If I was selling slaps in the face, and you came up to me and bought one....
...How much are you charging?

The live system has allowed for huge amounts of DLC to be on xbox first, the GTA episodes, Fallout 3 etc. These where all paid for by the live fee. They also pay for bandwith etc making it a much more appealing prospect to publishers who want to show demos of their new games, what sounds more appealing to a bussiness. Free, or pay? Many of the advances we have seen on the xbox through updates, content and community have come from this fee, a fee i want to add that i happily pay for.

Yes their is an arguement to be made for having a Free service, but i think the cost is worth it. I know i'm getting my moneys worth and that the money is being used to help my experience online be better. It's things like the xbox live membership which has allowed the xbox to have enough money to grab up every third party developer around, though i'm personally not looking forward to it i can name many people who are very happy about Final Fantasy 13 being on the xbox, and that membership fee contributed a large part of the muscle which allowed that to happen.

The membership for free arguement is a valid one and can't be dismissed, but i do wish people would stop dismissing the other side of the arguement and proceed to act high and mighty. So far i've witnessed alot of you ***** about xbox fanboys, yet i don't think i've seen any post, please try to be more civil and at the least address both sides of the arguement.

Live costs for the same reason Windows costs $200, Microsoft.
PSN does all Live does, but for free.
Linux does all Windows does, but for free.

Sometimes it's good to be a misanthrope like me. I don't enjoy online gaming.

OT: Because live is $50, and a new controller is $40. Why not pay an extra 10 and be able to play with millions of people instead of just playing with one other person.
Because local MP kicks the ass of online MP any day of the week.

Paying for online is a rip-off. It's that simple. MMO game fees are overpriced, Xbox live is overpriced and anyone that has handled a decent PC once in their life will know that it used to be normal not paying for these services. I personally don't mind because I avoid most online gaming like STDs but it still leaves a bad tradition for future, accustomed generations that will happily fork over their money for any online experience.

I'm pretty sure you can.

Incorrect. Linux does not have Windows' compatibility, and PSN does not have the community building features Live has, nor does it have the active, talkative community.

Please don't troll, this only serves to annoy others. If a group of xbox, ps3 or wii users did this you would label them fanboys flamers and trolls. discussion is fine, i'm sure you would all beat me in an agruement over xbox live fees, but doing that is just worse than console fanboys because you have the extra level hypocrisy which comes with it.

Except for the part where there are people on XBL... and none on PSN. (Yes, yes, there are people on PSN... like 4. (yes, yes, there are more than 4 people))

OT: I'm willing to pay 50 dollars a year so I can play with my fiends. Most of them have shitty PCs so they can't play any decent games on here, so I just play with them on Live. I realize that it's unfortunate to have to pay for this after years and years of playing on my PC for free, but IMO it's worth it just for the community and to play with all my friends.

If paying for it is so bad just venture out into the world of free xbox online gaming, just be prepared to play in heavily modified gametypes, and risk of hackers sniping you in halo 3 from 500 ft above the map.

Maybe you shouldn't have a 360, you knew you'd have to pay for Live.
You do know that you can have one without the other, right? I have my xbox and no live.

You see, trolling has never been truely defined to me, at least i've haven't met enough people to actively state one opinion. But say i'm wrong about the term, what would you call what your doing?

To me it seems like your gloating, being smug, acting superior and this makes me feel that you are being unkind to users who don't game on the PC. Now if thats not trolling, what is the correct term i should use.

Are you Cruel?
Are you elitist?
Are you fanboys?

Whatever you are, i think you know full well your not being very nice to other members of this community, make a statement about why the PC is better and i'd be fine, just don't swoop in and make a thoughtless comment just to smear in others faces.

They provide a service, which they have every right to charge money for. People are willing to pay money for it.

That's it.

The same reason anything costs money.

Because enough people are willing to pay for it.

If you don't like it, boycott, it's the only way.

I feel like my wallet's a little more full being a JRPG gamer with no online service on anything but the psp. Why? Because I don't use the online feature for more than the crappy browser [yay facebook! ^^]. I don't have to deal with hackers and children and campers and ETC.

So, if you don't like paying for all that, don't. Stop using it, and if you want multiplayer get used to splitscreen and Lego Star Wars. [I would put lol but I'd have to break my fingers]

Anyways back on topic:
Microsoft is a corporation. I don't mind it because they made Windows, which I use. But then there's chargings for things like you've mentioned; which reminds me clearly that Microsoft is a greedy corporate bastard that needs money lining their pockets made of woven gold and trimmed in diamonds. They need to make more profits, and charging is how you do it.

In simpler Terms: It's all about the Almighty Dollar.

Okay, I previously owned an Xbox360, but sold it due to the lack of features. I prefer PC gaming by far. One thing that really got to me was paying for Xbox Live. Paying to use an internet connection you already have? Yeah, I'll pass.

But I WANT to play online. So I pay for it. It's not like a gym membership.

Plus, Live also has a free option to let you get DLC, demos, and all that.

I, who have a 360, Wii, and PS3, can tell you that it costs money for a reason as it's the best console online service by FAR.

A completely valid point which i can agree with. Thank you.
