Well, that seems a little over-the-top. Though I don't know why people bother with the third party ones. I've had my 360 for over 3 years and played at least 2 dozen games, and I STILL haven't had to delete anything off of the hard drive. I don't think I'm even remotely close to the maximum memory capacity (and I don't even have the bigger one).
Not everyone has the same usage habits as you do?
And precisely what does that have to do with what I said? I was trying to say that I didn't understand the need for anyone to have a third-party device in the first place.
It has everything to do with what you said and why this is a problem for people. People who are not you may be in a situation where they want/need more space. They shouldn't have to be robbed by Microsoft and have their money get them far less than what they would get with a third party device. The reason a person may want a higher capacity storage device is obvious really.
Wait, so what exactly are you doing to take up 90GB+ of space? I say "you" because you seem to be taking my statement awfully personally.
People could be using the games on demand service heavily along with music, ad th video services. Look at the market place and you will see how someone could fill their drive quickly. They could also install the games the buy from the retail store etc.

Ah, I see your point there. Thanks for explaining that. I sometimes forget that you could use those things for other than playing games.

The wording is rather obtuse. As far as we know, the situation is as I described it, so there's no reason to get all worked up until the information is clarified. Odds are that Major Nelson will make another post specifying whether 3rd party hardware will still be usable in the near future.
If you actually clicked the link, you would see that Major Nelson also linked key phrases, like "authorized Xbox 360 storage device,""officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices," and "licensed accessories program on Xbox.com." Follow those links, and you'll see that it's pretty much as Cleverlymadeup described. If you don't use an object that has the Licensed for Xbox360 et al. logos, then it's not licensed, which means it won't work.

Maybe there are some 3rd party devices, but if you use one that's not specifically designed for and licensed for the 360, you're screwed. M$ gets paid for licensing, so it's still money-grubbing as well.

Oh well, cry me a river.

If you need to transfer data that badly then surely just use the hard drive?

Christ, demonising Microsoft because of this is a bit "Let's find a reason to hate this again".

On the other hand, Sony must be truly evil, because they have an internal hard drive! DUN-DUN-DUN.

Apologies if this comes across a flame, because that's exactly what it's meant to be.

Um, aren't the Elites less than $350 at this point, that's 120 GB. I don't use 120 GB on my fucking computer, hell my computer is so obsolete it doesn't have 120 GB HDD.

You need more space.

I'm sorry, but no, I don't feel sorry for those who bought Xbox's before the Elites came out, it's been a noticeable trend for a while now that the longer something is on the market, the cheaper it gets.

It's douchey? I'm sure M$ already made their money off the licensing agreements with their third party companies, now they're just forcing people to buy the product for no good reason (maybe the third parties are getting fed up and threatening to not renew or something). The freedom of use they offered before was taken away, and taking away something your buyer-base likes is kind of douchey.

The problem is that Microsoft's competitors (Sony and Nintendo) don't force you to use licensed products, so in comparison, M$ seem like greedy assholes. Maybe you disagree, and maybe you feel that Micro$oft is entitled; that's your opinion. You have the right to feel that way, but I also have a right to feel the way I do.

ummm not everyone has an elite, this will mainly screw over those who have an arcade or those that like to take their LiveID over to a friend's house and also back it up onto a memory stick

so yes it could affect a lot of people, not just the vast majority who don't own the elite model. oh and i did mean that wording

Does anyone actually use a hardrive not made by microsoft?
I didn't even know they existed. Sure, maybe memory cards... but hard drives?
lol well technically you can replace the actual hard drive part of the hard drive device or the part that fits onto the 360 (it's a lot smaller, like a chip almost) with something bigger and better...
my much more tech savvy and nerdier friend told me that
pity, he was thinking about trying to put one into my HD so we can download more games lol

I suppose I wouldn't care so much if the HDDs microsoft offers for the 360 wern't a complete rip off.
$170 (AU) for a 120gig HDD? Yeah right.
I got mine for £15 off of Ebay, and all but the arcade 360 model comes with a hard drive anyway.
Yeah I have a woefully inadequate 20 gig HDD at the moment.
With all of the Fallout 3, Saints Row 2, Oblivion, GTAIV and Fable 2 expansions I have this puts me in the "buy and new freaking hdd" corner.
I have about 50mb left right now haha.
Haha unlucky, yeah my 20GB ran out quickly. But I guess I'm a sucker for giving Microsoft money, I have 2 Xbox 360 Elites, and 1 Xbox 360 Arcade. That's 260GB altogether :p
Why do you need three Xboxes?
it's be great for college LAN parties lol

The article in the link doesn't mention, "Killing," the external device. It just says that a non-liscenced device will not work with the X360.

I'm not concerned about it. I don't own an X360, and I probably never will!

I'll admit that the main point of my post was that new purchasers of Xbox 360's won't have this issue. The choice is now between the 120 GB hard drive or no hard drive at all. Yes you can get an Arcade and an unlicensed hard drive, but wouldn't it just be easier to fork over the extra money?

I agree completely with this post. The Computer industry practically gets away with murder by renting out their products under the pretense of a sale, and dictating how you use it.

Is anyone here a lawyer? Can you tell me if this would violate US or EU competition law?

An internal hard drive that you can swap with no effort to any size you can get your hands on (so long as it fits the space), that you can then happily bolster with any USB external drives you feel like buying.

Speaking of, I need to get a new Ext. drive... We're gonna have to delete stuff if we want to watch the rest of FarScape!
